Hi, after some discussion with the Spacebattles thread, I revisited the idea of scrapping.

Quote from: Ruling I had made at Spacebattles @ 5/30/2023 17:49:30
Scrapping is totally possible: I forgot how I did it for the other side, but if you feel like a ship is holding you back you can opt to have a ship scrapped and I would say that you get probably half or 2/3rds the resources into its construction after I send it into the war for one final glory run. I'm gonna start thinking about locking the votes soon enough probably later tommorow.

EDIT: Holy crap C5, I really appreciate you re-jiggered the design items list since it was getting very hard to keep up with the forum limitations and all that. Thank you.

Elysium Command Arms Race of Conquest: Design Phase
Turn 7

Quote from: Infrastructure Design: Galton Genetic Therapy Service Contracts
Although our ancestors had once eradicated most genetic disorders from the gene pool, life amongst the stars has reintroduced them in force.  Due to persistent cosmic radiation exposure, even the most vetted of bloodlines may produce a fetal mutation.  For example, rates of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and Huntington's disease now significantly exceed Old Earth records.  While pre-natal and post-natal therapies are available to correct these and other disorders, the cost of such drastic medical intervention has prevented widespread adoption beyond the upper class.

Which is not to say we couldn't expand these crucial life saving services to the Public Health Service.  But with our current conflict, the budget has other priorities.  But what if...

Galton Genetic Therapy Service Contracts will bring these therapies to the masses while increasing the labor pool and also directing it towards government service.  Based on the severity of the disorder, parents may sign a service contract of five to thirty years.  (Parents would be amenable to sign a child destined to die from Tay-Sachs disease to a full 30-year career in the Fleet.  Whereas parents with a Crohn's, sickle cell disease, or G6PD deficiency diagnosis would rather negotiate a less intimidating contract.)

Upon completion of primary education, Galton Contractees are required to pursue further education in the military or civil service academies.  Failure to graduate secondary education may result in direct military enlistment of a Galton Contractee.  Contract time begins upon job placement, either via military enlistment or other qualified service.

It is believed that once having thoroughly established themselves in a career track, many Galton Contractees will stay within their service beyond their initial term.  Those that do depart under honorable terms will likely take their vocational expertise to other defense and defense-adjacent industries.  Overall, we can expect Galton Genetic Therapy Service Contracts to have major effects not only on military manpower, but the war economy as well.

Est Effect: 25 Resources
Difficulty: Easy
2d4--> 3+2+1 [Above Average]

Genetic engineering Projects decades in the making have finally made crucial, notable effects to our society as a whole as broad-spectrum demographic tools pointed towards making a society more effective in the art of war. Genetic Therapies as a whole are usually noted as tools for the elite to extend their life spans, but this process, as well as prenatal operancies can be introduced to other bands of society. Already, long term concerns where significant casualties could dull the prospect of a bright war-period are null and void with an expanding class of people thoroughly dedicated to the cause because of these societal measures. Tens of thousands of ship-crews are coming into effective rotas who are not only physically healthier then the previous generations, but are more capable spacers. As a whole, newer vessels with these crews will be capable of handling more violent accelerations with fewer casualty events in addition to the broad economic effects that our societal project has had outside of ship-crewing.

The old world had vessels fully crewed by full-body prosthetics-- people so severely augmented that they could survive both the rigors of a fully kitted warship without atmo or any amenities but data taps -- and the blindingly powerful impulsed acceleration of AM-Fusion Torch Drives. We won’t be able to hold parity to that for a long time, but it could be a possible research direction…

Galton Genetic Therapy Service Contracts
A long term societal project which expands our labor pool with fit, young, and fanatically dedicated people by offering genetic therapy to correct life-long defects to prospective parents in exchange for enrolling their child into a service contract. Primarily results in an expanding government labor force, but also a definitive surplus of loyal, fanatical and dedicated spacers.

Quote from: Design: Gate Capable Shuttle - 3 "Argent" Hull
A surprisingly long-lived hull, the GCS-2 Aero is still rooted legacy pre-combat technlogy.  The GCS-3 Argent is a full rework the GCS class 3x2 hull to meet modern Fleet requirements.

Much like the GCS-2 Aero, the GCS-3 Argent is designed with atmospheric operations on Ranachuri in mind.  The already light hull is streamlined and features hydraulic control surfaces for aerodynamic flight.  Aesthetically, this presents as delta-wing vessel, vaguely reminiscent of the Old Earth "Space Shuttle."  However, the exterior of the hull is a highly polished stainless steel alloy, (as its name would suggest.)  Besides providing low atmospheric drag, the reflective stainless steel exterior reduces absorption of laser light energy.

Following lessons learned from the Sabalier and Bouillon hulls, the GCS-3 Argent is generally more survivable.  Inside the stainless steel exterior, structural elements are engineered to modern MILSPEC standards, and key sections of the hull are appropriately armored.  Redundant electrical, life support and thermal fluids lines allow these critical shipwide networks to be bypassed and/or compartmentalized to isolate battle damage.  Given the known enemy threat of thermal energy, the integral thermal fluids system is over-engineered.  While still more fragile than larger contemporary hulls, the GCS-3 Argent should move more suitable to combat roles than its predecessor.

In line with the GCS-2 Aero, forced air intakes allow for rapid cooling of both rear thruster blocks, effectively doubling their performance in atmospheric flight.

Few take the operational mandate of the “Aero” part of aerospace operations very seriously in these blindingly bright times. Massive amounts of effort must be taken -- Wind tunnels, Atmospheric simulators, modeling and a thousand other aspects that make the work so difficult compared to the cold-hard math of combat in stellar conditions, which is compounded by internecine conflicts between these designers and the rest of the divisions. In the end, the GCS-3 Argent is a descendent of an aerospace craft of yore -- lightly armored and fast beyond any reason from a ground-dwellers perspective, but it has its flaws that any stellar acquisitions department would balk at.

Modern Third Generation composites enrapturing thermally conductive super-fluids replace the old-school heat-channels to feed the powerful radiative systems that line the hallowed casing of this craft. Artfully designed modular components means that it’s thrusting grid is the single most work-hour consuming system pound-for-pound compared to everything our Design bureau has worked on minus the faster than light systems, but it does its advertised job of doubling the thrust output of engines in atmo, while speccing to be capable of handling far-future systems. Millions of comp-hours have gone into creating what may very well be the finest aerospace craft created since the collapse. The stainless steel mirror coating on first glance seems like plain unpainted material, but is actually the first of one thousand carefully sandwiched 50 micron thick sheets of ceramo-metallic nanocomposite capable of surviving the rigors of atmospheric re-entry in-tandem with reaching parity with pure-space engineered materials in surviving combat operations against Skanzat ships -- it is designed to survive a retreat from a space-bound battle by committing re-entry, which is no small feat.

In the end, it has the ultimate capability to commit to acceleration and survive 9 Terran G’s of force with a 50% safety load, if its engines allow it, it has every capability as a pure- aero fighter of the histories. As a note, a shuttle sized craft capable of such things requires massive structural elements that require additional weight in addition to the internal component expenditure, combined with the armoring, means it has almost as much weight in armor and structure as a fully spec’d space vessel, despite only having some-what light armor.

All of this capability comes at a cost. While no more expensive than first projections indicate, a significant amount of R&D went into the production of the craft, The first two frames of this ship lineage that are produced will have double the cost to make up for the overages. (Note: not the entire craft, just the frames.)  All six slots are ready for module installation, unlike previous iterations of aero-shuttles.

”GCS-3 Shuttle-Corvette “Aero”
A third generation shuttle designated Corvette sized vehicle with a ancestral design lineage tracing out to the makeshift shuttles our Elysium used to fight against ourselves in the re-union wars, the GCS-3 has shed it’s makeshift trappings to become a modern mil-spec combat vessel. Its hull is equipped with some-what light third generation broadly protective armor, and heavy structure to survive multiple G’s and atmospheric stress. It is capable of committing atmospheric-reentry to escape combat thanks to its ceramo-metallic nanocomposite hull (that gleams like stainless steel) and the channels of thermo super-fluid that line the craft.. Its engine mountings are capable of doubling the amount of power output while in the atmosphere.

Revision: MGB Piezoelectric Resin

Quote
We have the misfortune of creating a weapon perhaps too powerful.  The thunderous vibrations of the MGB will eventually tear itself apart.  While this is technically true for any gun, "barrel life" on this system in particular is below acceptable norms.

To increase barrel life, the rails will be infused with piezoelectric resin.  Using the principles of piezoelectric mechanical damping, vibrations will be absorbed and converted into electrical energy that is then expended as benign nano-LED light.  (Obviously, the base polymer resin itself provides structural reinforcement as you expect from a non-exotic adhesive cement.)  In terms of aesthetics, this means the MGB will now glow as the shockwave of the projectile passes down the barrel.  Captured Starbolt electrical systems should aid in this optimization.

While we always hope Captains will adhere to our published safety guidelines, we understand they will likely still "push the envelope" of the revised MGB.  EVA tethers have been installed along the length of each barrel.  In the field, vaccsuit'd techs can now perform close inspections of the MGB, looking for precise points of structural strain and fatigue.  They can then attempt to patch the damage to extend the life of the barrel.  Doing so under combat conditions is something a true Hero De La 12 Societe would accomplish.

Revision: C6 Deck, Combat Information Center Addition

Quote
Ah the C5 Deck... A decadent design built in the optimistic days soon after the Gates reopened.  We were to rapidly reconquer the stars in the elegant accommodations befitting the Societe.  Alas, our adversary has proven tenacious. Luckily, our new generation of Galton Spacers are of hardier stock, and are more than willing to shoulder the necessary hardships to decisively win this conflict.

With great dismay, we announce that the standalone cabaret will no longer be featured on future "C6 Decks." (Of course, the Courtesans will remain.  However they must now provide "entertainment" at staterooms or other appropriate recreational facilities.  Likewise, the attached Cognac and wine cellar will become a standalone compartment, now commanded by the Galley Officer. We're not savages.)

In its place, will be located a new "Combat Information Center.". Distinct from the Captain's Battle Bridge which focuses on Fire Control and executive Command & Control, the CIC focuses on tracking the numerous contacts on the modern battlefield.  Increasingly, the battlefield is becoming more of a debris field.  With the ship's Kessler sensors triggering on every little piece of space shrapnel, it's easy for a Sensor Officer to get complacent, which may prove a catastrophic error as our adversary adopts torpedo-style weaponry.  The CIC provides a crew of Sensor personnel a standalone compartment with a dedicated daemon to collect, visualize, and analyze every nearby minor sensor contact.  (Large and distant contacts will still be tracked by the Battle Bridge Sensor Officer for directing major Fire Control systems and general navigation waypoints.) The end result is that the CIC provides the ship with detailed awareness and tracking of every parasite, projectile, warhead, micrometeor, and space junk within short range, for potential engagement by Point Defense assets or evasion by Helm.

I don't know if I'm about to create a new Value/Tag here, but adding a system to explicitly track potential incoming projectiles seems prudent.  Bundling it in the C5D makes sense too.

That being said, the Argent hull is just what we need and we got all the pieces and resources to put out some devastating prototypes this turn. Unfortunately, I'm phoneposting this week, so you'll have to wait for the next post for that.

Genetic Therapy Service Contracts: Officer Track
Keeping an eye out for prospective future officer candidates, Galton has set aside a special genetic tampering track for these individuals.
Once an individual is selected (if testing is impractical, good breeding must suffice,) they are put through additional rounds of genetic tampering, preliminary education, and psychoconditioning designed to maximize mental acuity, tactical acumen, and most importantly, loyalty. The officers produced are the finest seen in this sector in a long time, able to react to drastic changes in the battlescape in a fraction of the time a baseliner can, remaining calm regardless of how the tide turns.

So an interesting thing to note on the Galton Contract adjudication was that the GM rated the design as "Easy" and he commented that likewise spacers and soldiers used to be ultratranshuman.  We've put in the precursors to probably could design some kind of WH40K Space Marine, Dune Mentat, or whatever other augmented superhuman we want next turn.

In other news, here's the prototypes I'd like to run this turn.

Prototype: "Mars" Fleet Transport (FT)

Quote
We've ridden the FT Terra series far beyond their original specs, and now it is time for the FT Mars.  Built on the cutting edge GCS-3 Argent hull, the FT Mars should prove a more survivable atmospheric and forced entry transport.

The fore of the ship features a Remora with BaD Detachment, making the vessel forced entry capable.  The fore also featured a pAC installation, with enough PPC for hyperburst firing.  Beyond established space combat tactics, hyperburst pAC guns can execute tight strafing runs on planetary targets to suppress a landing zone.

The midsection of the ship holds a double troop module.  Adjacency with the Remora module enables rapid deployment during Forced Entry.  Given the double troop module effort should be made to modify the installation to support transport and deployment of heavier war machines.

The rear block features a low maint NTB that performs double in atmosphere and an SB2 array that supplies a surplus of PPC for the pAC.

Values: 40 Cost, 4 Maint, Weight 3, Aero 5, Thrust 3(4) x2 in atmos
Tag: Thermal 1

Code: [Select]
[NTB][TRP][RAD]
[SB2][TRP][pAC]

Prototype: "Comorant" Light Corvette (LC)

Quote
Firepower on a budget, the "Comorant" Light Corvette combines a powerful weapon system to qualify and barely enough survivability to qualify as a warship.  A lighter ship with a smaller target silhouette, the LC Comorant should rely on maneuver and agility in battle, as opposed to the larger and more brawl capable Bouillon and Sabalier hulls.  Exploiting its high aero-rating and air-cooled thruster, crafty Captains may even find refuge in the atmosphere of Ranachuri, where likely pursuers will fail.

The fore block is fully occupied by a powerful MGB system, allowing the mere GCS-3 Argent hull to punch far above its weight.  Given the ship's aero rating, this MGB can be used to directly bombard planetary targets, granting supported Ground Forces a powerful strike option.

The midsection features the latest C6D, providing necessary Fire Control for the fore MGB, and supporting an adjacent pAC for Point Defense.

The rear features a low maint NTB with double performance in atmos  and an SB2 to power the MGB.

Values: 48 Cost, 10 Maint, Weight 3, Aero 5, Thrust 3 (4) x2 in atmos
Tag: Thermal 1

Code: [Select]
[NTB][C6D][MGB]
[SB2][pAC][MGB]

Prototype: "Mont Blanc" Battery Frigate (BF)

Quote
The largest hull in our inventory, the Sabalier-S has a unique native feature to enhance MGB performance.  With the CFR now providing enough PPC two run twin MGB installations and still power defensive systems, now is the time to revive this hull for its original purpose.  The hulking "Mont Blanc" Battery Frigate will dominate the battlefield with its unbelievable massed firepower.

As advertised, all four front slots are occupied by a double MGB installation, fully exploiting the hull's native feature.

The two internal midsection slots are occupied by the latest C6D, (providing the necessary Fire Control for the MGBs) and a CFR (providing a surplus of PPC for the ships various systems.)  In the unlikely scenario a vessel attempts to outlast an encounter with the BF Mont Blanc, the Yellow-Line Feature of the CFR can be used to rapidly recharge PPC stores.

The older hull's lack of Thermal rating is fully mitigated by a well-powered TTR.  Twin NTB's give the vessel an acceptable Thrust despite its size.  Finally, a hyperburst pAC linked to the C6D's new CIC provides Point Defense.

Values: 85 Cost, 19 Maint, Weight ?, Thrust 6 (8)
Tag: Thermal 4

Code: [Select]
[TTR]     [MGB]
[NTB][CFR][MGB]

As much as I like the design, I would prefer for more specific  component based systems and stuff to be made as it is difficult for me do my math with too many "global" variables on both sides. I would be much more accepting of something like a C6 deck style component where the focus is on augmented people at the helm instead.

This is the first system with which we have forged third generation weapons, and it will not be hte last. The newest update includes a resin derived from the same processes andmaterials that we are using to line our terrawatt stellar forges to prevent  vibrations from the reactions. It is a effective process, and the weapon is now fully capable of standard operation without ruinous wear and tear. That isnt to say it’s  maintenance profile has been eliminated, as the barrel of the weapon now has to be thoroughly inspected after each battle to ensure no catastrophic  reduction has accumulated  from the resins, but it  is noticeably reduced.

The huge cannons utilize rails of exotic, heavily manufactured super materials to launch payloads with a reusable bucket. Two rounds types are carried, Second Generation APDSDU rounds and Combination radar and thermal proximity detonator shaped charge rounds, “Hammerhead” and “Slicer.” Slicer rounds are designed to be fired at enemy engines and disable them, and are more effective against low fuel efficiency engines. It requires a fire control system to fully utilize its functions, but it comes with onsite gunner back up systems. It utilizes hardened autoloaders. Its magnetic rails are prone to wear, with a expanded maintenance requirement.

In a sense, it isn’t a massive change to the old C5 systems that make the C6 deck. A minimization of dangerous risks, a movement towards a colder, machinelike and efficient patterning, but it is what it is. The C6 deck is the heart of the ship, and the module is even further rebuilt to  succeed in that role. Although we lose much in character, we gain enough volume from trimming to generate a secondary CIC module in addition to the primary Battle Bridge. This CIC module is a system where impressive incognition elements and skilled indent officers analyze the battlefield. The computational elements are economical in nature, but pound for pound are effective as they are dedicated to the purpose of astronagivational analysis.

C6 Deck -- [C5D]
A component set deep into a ship, a C5 Deck consists of a hardened bunker module that houses both a Captain’s Battle Bridge and a Combat Information center. It is separated from the outer decks, with its own life support system. It is equipped with a Command and Control system based on haptic and holographic systems. It has two central computational engines each specialized towards fire-control and scanning for potential threats, it is a modern system that is far and away superior to primitive systems we have built at the time of the C5’s realization.. It has a toned down, but luxurious set of amenities which the navy will acclimate and rely on for their increased performance in the field.

The ship works. The less that can be said about its startling tendency for the COMP-ENGINE to state that it will spontaneously detonate, the better.

"Mars" Class Fleet Transport
The Mars is based off of the GCS-3 Argent hull frame, and is dedicated to Ground attack & Forced entry Ops. Equipped with Powered Point defense Autocannons, Many hangars for Troops, Remora Forced Entry Airlock and Docking Module, Solar Battery plants, Mil-Spec Nuclear-Thermal Engines.  Excellent ground characteristics despite a comp-engines nightmare that it will spontaneously explode one day.

Excellent aerodynamics.  Otherwise very expected operational parameters. New ship smell is particularly strong, good luck charm?

"Comorant" Light Corvette
The Comorant is based off of the GCS-3 Argent hull frame, and is dedicated to heavy weapons & maneuver combat in an out of atmo. Equipped with Magnetic Cannons, point defense weapons with magnetic accelerators, A C6 Deck, and Mil-Spec Nuclear Engines. Excellent Aerodynamics

Above average Weapon Durability. This thing will tear through an enemy warship.

"Mont Blanc" Battery Frigate
The Mont Blanc is based off of the Sabalier-S hull frame, and is dedicated to Battery fire & Straight out combat on a terrifying scale.. Equipped with Magnetic Cannons, Nuclear Reactors, Point Defense with magnetic accelerators, Transplanar Thermal Superconducting Radiators, A C6 Deck, and two bricks of Mil-Spec Nuclear Engines.  Its batteries are hellishly durable.
