Elysium Command Arms Race of Conquest: Private Thread

This is an arms race which primarily revolves around spaceships and their legendary exploits. This thread is dedicated to the machinations of the Elysium controlled by the viewers of the Bay12 forum games and roleplaying subsection.

If you are new to the game and wish to participate, please read the core thread first.


Introduction
We are a people who have come from a storied background of intensive warfare and survival. United together on our Elysium, we explored the heavens and ignited the gates, just as our ancestors did so long ago. Among the graveyards of the ancient dead diaspora, we found another Elysium, or rather their ships' crude guns. Far away from the home of our most enlightened people, a war machine is ramping up; the forges of our elysium have been ignited in response to their aggressive attack on our exploration craft and their barbaric ways.

in the decayed Forge of Elysium, new works are being etched into the cool liquid computational engines of our Elysium. But who are you? What are your people? Now is the time to define who our people are, and how did we ascend from our fall after the Dissolution War.

Naturally sensors, fire control systems, and autoloaders are fully integrated in the modular NGAC system.

"Rubik" Spacefaring Corvette Hull
Measuring roughly 35 meters in each direction, the Rubik is a step up from the GCS, one of the first ships assembled in the makeshift ship-yards of our Elysium instead of interior hangar bays, required specifically for it’s bulky cuboid frame. The Rubik represents the beginning of a doctrine of specialized warships and a separation from aerospace and stellar engineering. To that end, the results are promising.

The hull of the Rubik consists of several large hardened steel girders that make up into two rectangular modules that are precision welded together,resulting in a powerful base onto which the rest of the ship is built around. The hull plates are given gaps several inches thick in the front and sides, allowing for an increased survivability per pound of armor. Per meter, the increase of armor is roughly ten percent to fifteen percent over the GCS, but is capable of standing against the against weapons systems like the GCS  for prolonged periods of time due to the deformations of projectiles by the spaced armor. While the Rubik requires a significantly increased amount of material over the GCS, The simplicity of the shape of the hull some-what reduces this cost. It is notable that the Rubik has not completely lost it’s “Aerodynamic” tag, and is capable of landing on it’s “tail” on worlds without a atmosphere and with a low gravity, like moons or asteroids. If the vessel was any larger, this would not be possible without a modicum of design effort..

"Rubik" Spacefaring Corvette Hull: A durable corvette hull with spaced armor specialized towards stellar operations, The Rubik has average primitive armor specialized towards small primitive kinetic projectiles. Capable of landing on barren moons. Noted to have a robust structure despite utilizing modular frames in it’s construction.

The NGAC is a project beleaguered by the realities of the actinide and heavy metal desert we find ourselves in. We have not fully discovered fission reactors, and thus any form of reprocessing systems for the depleted fuel of our Elysium’s tertiary fission reactors.(the only accessible power solution we have, the secondary and primary power generators are systems we plainly do not understand nor can access.) The aforementioned fission reactors do produce depleted fuel, but not the depleted uranium our ancestors shot into the unenlightened. This was not discovered until several rounds had been damaged during trials of the prototype autoloading and turret systems, as well as thoroughly contaminating several prototyping fabricators of the Elysium. Much of the original development time intended to fabricate the turret was instead directed into cleaning up these internal systems and thus the final result of the NGAC is unpolished. The NGAC utilizes rounds which are essentially one step above the irregular HE rounds utilized by the EACS. The Ball turret allows for the weapon to be placed on facets that do not directly face the enemy.

It has several notable issues that present severe technical difficulties in its function. It is incapable of standing by for an extended period without massive faults, resulting in portions of the gun network being unable to fire each engagement unless put into the redline, which represent categorically keeping guns online despite critical maintenance issues(Yellow line represents ignoring maintenance times to keep more guns online). It is inaccurate due to faults in the turret systems.

Next-Gen Autocannon (NGAC) -- (nAC):
The NGAC is a series of turreted autocannons with integrated fire control and sensory systems. It is designed as a dual 40mm ball turreted autocannon, of which half a dozen per slot is put onto the hull. The turret is rated for a 180 coverage on both axes. It utilizes crude HE rounds. It is self-contained, and only requires Maintenance to function. It is incapable of standing by for an extended period without massive faults, resulting in portions of the gun network being unable to fire each engagement unless put into the redline. It is inaccurate due to faults in the turret systems.

As miraculous as our efforts to reconstruct the gate keys have been, software-wise they're still very spaghetti-code.  The decryption algorithm was built early in development, and didn't benefit from some later experiments with the gate network.  We now should be able to develop a set of rainbow tables to more quickly bypass the cryptographic hash functions of the gate network.  While our coders are in there, they should also tidy up and annotate the source code as much as possible.  The end result should be less computational power drain, as well as, less maintenance.

You know what peak inefficiency looks like?  Insisting every damn ship have its own gate key.  Teamwork makes the dream work, people.  Yank the key and its two solar arrays: BOOM, now you can double both the payload and the gunnery.  Now it can move two divisions and defend itself air. space, and ground threats.  Substantially cheaper in both construction cost and maintenance too.  (Why didn't we think of this earlier?)

So here we go with a theme...

La 12th Société

The founders of our Elysium were upper-crust old Earth European money.  (Or so they claimed.)  They were a proud and refined peoples, with an obsession for collecting Old Earth antiquities.  It was an expensive hobby that turned into a profitable business as they cornered the antiquities trade.  After all, with the endless bounty of the Elysium forges spread across 100,000 stars, genuine Old Earth artifacts were one thing that could not be made.  Soon, they had bought out the other interests in our Elysium.

Wearing a the Imperial State Crown of Queen Elizabeth II, the "Premier Empereur de la 12th Société" declared his reign.  With a wave of his golden scepter (topped by Einstein's 1921 Nobel Prize Medallion,) he claimed his absolute authority over not only the entire torus, but all things that orbit our red dwarf star.  La 12th Société became an eccentric but still thriving space station.  Under the Empereur's command, the entire economy focused on antiquities: their acquisition, restoration, and preservation.  Hydroponic greenhouses and industrial spaces were reclaimed into grand museums, statuary gardens, and exhibition galleries.  Before the War, La 12th Société was a premier tourist destination, where one could drink a morning cappuccino under a Michelangelo, escargot for lunch under a Monet, cerviche for dinner under a Picasso, then retire for the night to the melodies of a Stradivarius violin.  Despite inhabiting a relatively worthless red dwarf system, they had one of the highest standards of living due to interstellar commerce.  After all, agriculture, heavy industry, and other products of similar dirty jobs could simply be imported.

Then the gates went dark...

At first, the Empereur insisted this was all a temporary problem.  "One day, like a miracle, the gate will be open."  Brandishing his authentic WW2 poster, the official policy slogan was "Keep clam & carry on."  And for the most part, the people of our torus did.  Consumption continued, and sincere efforts were made to continue accommodating stranded tourists on a credit-based system.

But as days became weeks, and weeks became months, the crisis became undeniable.  Store shelves were empty, restaurants were closed, and hoteliers abandoned five star hotels to guests turned squatters.  So dependent on foreign trade, soon even the Empereur realized he couldn't eat Da Vinci's "Last Supper."  Emergency efforts were made to revert the statuary garden back to productive agriculture.  But those efforts took months to literally bear fruit.

In the meantime, the lower decks of the torus descended into anarchy.  The unemployed servant class devolved into violent gangs and preyed upon themselves for survival.  After extensive savagery and likely cannibalism (frequently denied by la 12th Société), the lower deck gangs pledged a truce, and allied for a real solution to their problems.

Wearing Marilyn Monroe's white dress from "The Seven Year Itch," the Impératrice finds her husband alone in his throne room.  A recording of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata reverberates through the cavernous hall, the court pianist having long since disappeared.  The Empereur paces slowly and stares out the glass cupola ceiling: a dead gate against an endless starscape.

A comm device in his hand crackles to life, "Alamo has fallen!  Alamo has fallen.  It has been an honor, your Majesty... *BANG*"

Resigned to his fate, the Empereur tosses aside his personal comm device like it was a piece of litter.  After all, no longer needed it.  He sees his wife joining him, "My Dear, you look beautiful tonight."

Having overhead the comm device, she knows they don't have much time.  "Thank you.  I've already tended to the others..."

A single tear falls from the Empereur's right eye, "I'm sorry Dear.  I wish I had done you better."

Having never seen him cry before, she embraces him with a kiss.  The weight of General Patton's ivory-handled .45 is heavy in his hand as he chokes back further tears.  The echoing stampede of the raging mob is unmistakable on their Italian marble floors.  The Empereur de la 12th Société summons his last bit of strength to raise the polished metallic under his wife's delicate throat.  She begins crying too as they stand illuminated by the sudden glow of the awakened gate.

NGAC Development... not our finest hour.  (Who knew radioactive elements were so difficult to handle?)  The NGAC Reliability Program is an additional effort to resolve the issues of the NGAC.  The ball turret servos must be reworked to track quickly and precisely.  Furthermore, the electrical bus should be able to sustain itself on standby without "redline" procedures.  Worst case scenario, add more circuit breakers.

The revision works well, and despite several concerns by the higher admiralty no real changes in cost. It appears to have been a boring evolution of power for the NGAC. It is now a reliable machine with very little issues or attributes to distinguish itself.

It is difficult to reduce the Gate Keys maintenance schedules and cost without providing better power systems, bigger components or otherwise making compromises to the ships systems.  To that end, efforts to reduce the massive efficiency issues without any of the aforementioned compromises or changes in function were failures. Rather than completely giving up Larger computational engines with higher computational output standards were fabricated and run together with heuristic algorithms that paired these systems together intimately. Although a bit of a batch job, these expensive systems have rapidly made some positive improvements in the overall maintenance and power drain of the Gate-Key in its ultimate moment. The computers are expensive and difficult to manufacture.

Gate Key v2 -- [GA2]
A complex device that utilizes energy stored from on-ship batteries to slice into the gate’s network , open it’s iris to allow the passage, and then ignites it’s ancient machine, utilizing a very large amount of power to do so. This model is crude and energy intensive, only barely able to handle the power required to send a ship of the same tonnage as the gate-key bearing ship, while requiring a stupendously expensive manufacturing process. However, unlike the original prototypes, it can open the gate to allow other ships through. Utilizing vast computational engines, the power and maintenance costs of the Gate Key are reduced at the expense of an increased production cost.

The utilization of the nAC in forward facing slots had had some unexpected improvements in the ships function, allowing for an above expected effective dispersal and sightlines of the guns, allowing for the weapon to fire rounds down range with a marked increase in effectiveness. Engine system runs slightly above efficiency lines than expected.

Combat Corvette Rubik: “Aura” Variant
The Aura is a very high maneuverability & speed craft, capable of advanced maneuvers and techniques owing to the fact that about a third of its mass is dedicated to it’s powerful & primitive engines. The interior compartments are interspaced around the Gate Key, internalized fuel tanks and autoloader systems, which make up the center of the craft. It is set with dozens upon dozens of turreted primitive autocannons. Large portions of it’s surface area consist of solar panel and radiator emplacements, which drink greedily from the sun to fuel the Gate Key it holds.

It’s a some-what disappointing mirror of the Pattern A “Aura”. It’s gunnery systems are adequate, though much more capable to shoot down missiles. In simulacrum operations, this ship is effective in the close-range strafing of enemy ships, able to take a frankly astonishing amount of damage before succumbing to hull rupturing. It’s sensory systems are somewhat dulled by electrical systems create a electrical signature that simultaneously damage sensor profile resolution as well emission reduction system, though the admiralty judge this issue to not be significant enough to decline the ship from induction into the fleet. This ship is effective in the close-range strafing of enemy ships, able to take a frankly astonishing amount of damage before succumbing to hull rupturing. It’s engine mounts are it’s weak points, and will likely falter against seeker weapons.

Combat Corvette Rubik: “Slayer” Variant
The Slayer is a very high maneuverability & speed craft, capable of advanced maneuvers and techniques owing to the fact that about a third of its mass is dedicated to it’s powerful & primitive engines. The interior compartments are interspaced around the Gate Key internalized fuel tanks and autoloader systems, which make up the center of the craft. It is set with dozens upon dozens of turreted primitive autocannons interspersed to shoot down incoming ordinance and very close ships. Large portions of it’s surface area consist of solar panel and radiator emplacements, which drink greedily from the sun to fuel the Gate Key it holds. Higher than expected sensor emission & lower than expectedsensor capabilities.

You know what peak inefficiency looks like?  Insisting every damn ship have its own gate key.  Teamwork makes the dream work, people.  Yank the key and its two solar arrays: BOOM, now you can double both the payload and the gunnery.  Now it can move two divisions and defend itself air. space, and ground threats.  Substantially cheaper in both construction cost and maintenance too.  (Why didn't we think of this earlier?)

The Venus is a specialized craft with a real return to the roots of the GCS. most of it’s internal sections are filled with ammunition depots, personnel quarters and rigging to survive re-entry and hostile conditions. Forward facing tracked turrets are sheathed in aerodynamic coverings, as well as several other pieces of equipment that increase the aerodynamic capabilities of the craft. Although the high admiralty detest the idea of having to deploy more than a minimal effort in supplying ground operations, they have reluctantly accepted the design into the records, mostly due to the utilitarian usage it has in breaking theorized gate camps.

Gate Capable Shuttle - 2: “Venus” Fleet Transport Variant
The Venus is a very high maneuverability & speed craft, capable of advanced maneuvers and techniques owing to the fact that about a third of its mass is dedicated to it’s powerful engines. It’s interspersed between core systems are with troop quarters and autoloaders for it’s relatively many guns. It is heavily gunned with primitive kinetic turreted weapons. Fabrication Techniques have increased it’s aerodynamic capabilities. It has an above average engine output.

Right. An Idea for later, as revision, not design. But had to get thought to forum:

Revision: Ionized Hydrogen Engine
It is a known fact that one can get a workable, and in fact very fuel efficient (if power hungry), thruster through ionizing the reaction mass and having it ejected out of the craft. It's a principle we can potentially apply to our hydrogen engines to vastly improve their efficiency. While projections estimate that the raw thrusting power of the engines will show only marginal improvements, the vastly improved fuel efficiencies at lower outputs (such as used when merely cruising from point A to B) means that the amount of hydrogen and oxygen stocks aboard a ship will deplete less from day to day activities, and the absolute minimum needed to limp back to our Elysium is less. This means that our ship crews have significantly more leeway in actually using their engines liberally in combat.

And now, for a wild idea, possibly for now!:

Design: 'Dagger' Interorbital Fighter
Though it started as an experiment on how to get the smallest possible independent spacecraft hull, it was seen to have some promise in the battles ahead. Said experiments were almost certainly successful in their goal, as the Dagger is absolutely tiny, with even the GCS-2 utterly dwarfing it. The craft is shaped similarly to its namesake, having a short bladeshaped hull that comes to a point, it's 'hilt' a pair of aerodynamic wings that double as an attachment point for fine maneuvering thrusters. All in all, a craft that should be able to pursue and harass our enemies wherever they may go.

@GM, need some serious proofreading on the spoiler'd bookkeeping data.

We had 90 resources last turn, but now we have 120?  But minus 16 maint, when it should be 22 (9+9+4)?  But, "maintenance costs are suspended while ships are in dockyards."  And somehow we then have "90 resources available?"  I literally have no idea what just happened there.

The template layout for the Slayer is identical to the Aura?

The Venus still has PPC 6 listed?

Ha, that Dagger is pretty fiendishly clever.  Though I'd also like to future-proof our Rubik's with a more powerful main gun...

Design: 160mm Main Gun System (MGS)

The 160mm (~6in) Main Gun System (MGS) is a forward-facing large bore conventional cannon system intended as a primary weapon system.  (In effect, relegating the smaller caliber 40mm nAC as a secondary armament.)

The weapon itself is a single barrel mounted in a casement style turret.  The narrowed field of fire provided by a casement is a necessary sacrifice to properly anchor a large system with tremendous recoil.  However, it is already expected captains would maneuver their vessels for the sake of the primary weapons anyways.  The MGS fires a 60kg (132lb) armor-piercing high explosive shell.

Naturally, the sensors, fire control systems, and autoloaders perfected under nAC development are adapted for this weapon system.
