((As this is the first big decision, I'll give it a bit longer to see if more people weigh in.))

Whilst you weigh up the two contracts, you decide to give Commander Andess a call.

The terminal pulses softly for a few beats, before the scarred face of a soldier caste fades into view.

As per protocol, she stays silent until you speak. "Commander Andess, I trust now is a good time?"

Andess brings a paw into view for a salute, "Absolutely sir. How can I be of service?"

"I want your input Commander, regarding the forces necessary for these two jobs." With a gesture, you transfer the summaries to Andess.

You wait quietly as she reads. "We won't know for certain until we see what we're up against, but Erythia will likely be a hard nut to crack. Unless the governor is an imbecile they'll know just how thin the blade edge they're balancing on is.

They'll have facilities hardened against Orbital Strike at the very least, if not a way to discourage the idea entirely. They'll also have the means to stop a Hot Drop, necessitating a distant landing and an approach on the ground, plus ways to make that ride as unpleasant as possible.

So we will need to deploy top-end, combined arms tech. It'll be pricey, but there's nothing quite like a brutal opening play to convince someone to play ball.

Thraneia is a different game. We can get away with more budget-friendly units here thanks to the lack of any real weaponry from the natives. I'd still suggest a few choice examples to play into the shock and awe of being starfarers surrounded by mud dwellers, but our main goal is to search and recovery, not pitched battle."

Assuming the lack of any real weaponry from the natives (which likely includes explosively propelled weapons, like guns) I feel like we can just send a squad or two of people armed with assault/battle rifles and stab-resistant armor (if it's possible to do so while also making their environmental suits able to filter out toxic gases and simultaneously insulate them from the cold) to neutralize any natives that refuse our right to reclaim the Ibex and return it to the contractor. Maybe give each squad 1 soldier equipped with a higher capacity weapon for fire support just in case. Some combat engineers will be useful for fixing up the Ibex as well, so why not have 1-2 per squad.

>Deploy a small retrieval team to Thraneia Delta to get the Ibex back into space where it's supposed to be, instead of being crashlanded on some iceball planet.

C5 and Zultan want to go to Erythia Prime. A1s and 0cra want to go to Thraneia Delta.

If we get one more voter, I won't have to flip a coin.

The high payout of the Erythia job is enticing, but you decide to go for the Thraneia request task first, both for the sophonitarian work and to allow yourself a chance to get back into the swing of things.

"Thank you Commander. Your input has been helpful."

She saluted again, and you end the connection. You pull up Hallnik's ident and dictate a quick message, before withdrawing from the terminal, straightening out your clothes and heading to the bridge.

---

Half a cycle later, you find yourself fidgeting in a cradle in the briefing room with Hallnik and Andess, allowing you to finally have a look at how they work together. In addition there is Senior Relations Officer Branir, the head of your two-person Xeno-Relations team.

Your Ops Officer waves a paw and the lights dim. A heartbeat or so later the main wall starts to glow, and an off-white sphere appears in the middle of the room. Small icons flicker around it, mostly clustered around a belt of colour that confirms the obvious.

"Welcome to Thraneia Delta," starts Hallnik. "First surveyed in 34290, the combination of the high chlorine atmosphere, indigenous pre-stellar life and a lack of strategic value saw it quickly classified as off-limits and prompty ignored bar the occasional Cultural Research mission. They are currently midway through their equivalent of an industrial revolution, with steel weaponry on its way out in favour of crude kinetic penetrators.

The natives are facultative bipeds organised in dynastic kingdoms that claim various regions of the temperate belt," Hallnik waves a paw before bringing two claws together, the planet spinning before zooming in on a collection of symbols, "and the Ibex had the misfortune of crash landing just north of a technological backwater between two rival polities.

When we first got contacted for this job, expeditions from both sides were making their way to the site, but they'll no doubt have reached the ship by the time we arrive. According to the manifest, there were 22 crew and passengers on board at the time. We need to confirm that number and recover them all, regardless of their condition. We also need to remove the Ibex itself, including any samples taken by the Thraneians.

Whilst our contract allows us to breach Star Common law regarding interaction with pre-stellar civilisations, Legal will have a hard time defending us if glass half the planet to ensure no post-stellar tech is left to reverse engineer."

This is where Branir chimes in, "We have the notes from when the Common Star reps tried to talk their way out of this. The Thraneians reacted badly to 'extraterrestrial' life. It appears they  were also using an incorrect dialect, as communication was difficult, although they're pretty sure the natives started calling them 'Sky Demons'. However, we will need to talk with them somehow to find out what they've done with the survivors and any tech they've found."

"And for that we need a presence on the planet," you say. "I don't recall seeing anything for that in the manifest..."

Andess speaks up now. "Yes Sir, we travel light, but with the Foundry and schematics library we can manufacture the right tools for each job. All but the most basic blueprints have some sort of license fee, but its much better than having to shoehorn in something that just doesn't fit.

Speaking of, sir, I took the liberty to pick out a few of blueprints I think will get the job done". She taps her PDA and a pair of models flicker into existence next to the map.

***

Getco Corporation 'Valkyrie' Shuttle
Tech Level: 12
Fee: 2.2 MegaCred
Materials: 60 Common, 20 Rares, 10 Exotic
A Getco favourite, the Valkyrie is the only real choice for orbital insertion and atmospheric travel. Capable of reaching stable orbit in an hour1, it is atmospherically sealed and rated against CBRN threats and optionally includes anti-personnel weapon mounts.

1. Based on common Terrestrial Grade planets

ScoCorp Multistellar X-B02 Light Infantry Unit
Tech Level: 12
Fee: 1.5 MegaCred
Materials: 40 Common, 10 Rare
Do you need a highly mobile, rapid response force? Do you have to contend with difficult terrain? Do you need to keep eyes on elusive targets? The X-B02 is the answer to your prayers! Built to last in harsh environments, each unit has inbuilt broad spectrum sensors that outstrip all competitors, despite the low-energy demand that allows it to operate for almost a supercycle1 before needing refuelling.

1. In laboratory conditions

***

"I recommend we pay for two of each sir. We'll be able to produce a unit of each by the time we hit realspace, and the Trade Surplus should be able to source any extra resources we need easily."

"These fees are per Supercycle, right? We'd have to get this all done before the second license fee is due if we want to make any sort of profit. "

"It'll be tight sir, but I can get it done."

Pausing as if in thought, a few eye movements has your ocular lens transmit a message to your aide.

Hallnik shifts slightly in his seat, and a few moments later your PDA vibrates in your pocket. One more eye gesture, and a message appears in your view.

Andess deserves every merit she has received, sir, but she has a penchant for high tech toys when something cheaper would suffice.

Now is the time to decide. The ship manifest reports we have 100 Common Materials, 50 Rare Materials and 50 Exotics, so Andess is right that we'd have to source more, but we can harvest some asteroids easily enough.

You can query the library for alternative schematics if you wish, using whatever criteria you have in mind. It's not unlimited, but you should be able to find something that fits.

This is kind of like an AR design phase, except you're actually shopping through other people's products. Looking at them costs nothing, so I will respond to whatever requests you make as and when. Just don't be silly about it.

Blueprint Query: Xeno-Relations Protocol Droid
Sure would be nice if Branir could go boots on the ground.  But alas, he'd not a field operative, and phD's don't grow on trees (yet).  Instead, we shall send in a semi-autonomous droid, able to speak with these backwards savages in their own language (and dialect).  It should be able to follow the infantry on mission, to "question" the Thraneians to locate the personnel, and "negotiate" with the Thraneians as necessary for their recovery.  Obviously, it must readily take commands from ground forces.

Blueprint Query: K-9 Olfactory Organic Search Team
That is a lot of bodies to recover, and depending how hard the Ibex crashed, we could be searching a debris field for scattered body parts.  Carnivorous scavengers probably already dragged off some meatier parts into the bush, and some of the savages may have performed burial services.  Luckily a K-9 can smell a cadaver under five meters of soil, and can distinguish scents between different species.  Tracking live organics by scent trail is also within their purview.  Dead or alive, K-9 should be able locate them all.
(OOC: GM is still establishing the theme here, so I kept the description vague.  Those are specs for present day cadaver search dogs, but if GM wants to make "K-9" refer to cyber-dogs, quadrupedal robots, or some kind of vat-grown creature, he can.)

I somehow completely forgot that small, specialist units would also be wanted at times. To reflect the resource cost of those versus the larger military units Andess offered, some materials costs have been upped by a factor of ten. Fees are unaffected.

"Whilst it's easy to communicate through a ground unit, sometimes an armed droid shrieking in monotone via loudspeaker is not the impression you want to make. I doubt any commercial language library will have better Thraneian than the diplo-team gave us, but if you get me some local 'volunteers', I'll be able to produce a modern language pack." - Brenir

Nulantelligence Interpreter Droid - Travel Mod.
Tech Level: 11
Fee: 0.2 MegaCreds
Material: 1 Common
Fluent in over six million forms of communication, this droid can use its array of directional microphones and speakers to translate between specific individuals despite background noise. Modular externals allow the user to present the Droid in a variety of body plans, aiding the impression of any business meetings. The Travel Mod makes the droid more streamlined, capable of maneuvering cross-country and for longer with an extended battery life. The remote presence suite allows a user to pilot the unit from home, providing direct sensory feedback and real-time translation.

Good overall, but the design is distinctly robotic even with the suggested Korraxian mod pack. Also, expect some dysmorphia if the body plan is too different.

ScoCorp Multistellar X-K90 Search and Recovery Team - Law Enforcement Package
Tech Level: 12
Fee: 1.2 MegaCreds
Material: 2 Common, 2 Rare
Each X-K90 team works as a seamless unit to track down their target. Aerial Seekers drones use high resolution optics to canvas large areas, whilst quadrupedal Pursuit units use both olfactory sensors and pattern recognition to identify tracking sign and hone in on a target, be they tens of klicks away, or tens of meters before the ground. The team is rounded out with the bipedal Recovery units, capable of removing most natural obstructions, providing first aid suitable for all Common Star Species and transporting injured Individuals. The Law Enforcement Package gives all units improved durability, and a variety of Less-Lethal armaments, usable in self defence and in detaining aggressive targets.

(OOC: GM is still establishing the theme here, so I kept the description vague.  Those are specs for present day cadaver search dogs, but if GM wants to make "K-9" refer to cyber-dogs, quadrupedal robots, or some kind of vat-grown creature, he can.)
((We're pretty scifi soft here, beyond fudging a somewhat logical tech progression. Currently the Foundry can only work with synthetic materials, although there is the opportunity to change that later. ))

Ring up Hallnik to confirm the the Trade Surplus is ready to start producing, and to get our resource budget in writing.  (OOC: I think we skipped this?)

Then, let's get a sanity check from Andess on this task org.  We're substituting the two specialists in for the second shuttle.  (Those things are expensive, and this improved task org beats her recommendation by almost a full Mc).  Barring no major objections, time to start earning.

Quote from: Leased Assets
Shuttle x 1 = 2.2 Mc
Light Infantry x 2 = 3M Mc
Interpreter x 2 = .4Mc
Search & Rescue x 1 =  1.2 Mc

Total Investment Cost = 6.6 Mc

As requested by Ground Ops, 2 light infantry but they'll have to share one shuttle.  Each unit is augmented with an interpreter, should they need to split up (crash site recovery vs. "engagement" with off-site natives).  One infantry unit should provide dedicated security for the S&R Team.

I did mention it in the detailed mission briefing, but it was buried in the middle of a paragraph. You have 100 Common Materials, 50 Rare Materials and 50 Exotics in storage currently. The Trade Surplus can produce more from asteroids easily enough, the only challenge will be in identifying suitable ones for mining.

Also, the Shuttle license actually covers a small flight, so all ground units will be able to make use of them, there just won't be enough for them all at once.

So we could save some money by sending part of the troops down and have them establish a beach head while we get the others sent.

Hmm, based on the resource flow, seems like we'd need to do two waves anyways?  Exfil might get sticky if the natives go full Zulu on us, but so long as the VIP's are the first ones out, mission accomplished.
