CHOOSE YOUR OWN MAFIA 4
Choose-Your-Own-Mafia 4 is a game of mafia where you pick aspect of your roles.
It's a successor to earlier CYOMs.
Basic rules:
- No PMing to anyone but me, the mod.
- No Quoting of the Mod in relation to PMs. You are free to quote anything in the thread. You may also paraphrase.
- Semi-hammers in effect. Days last on a soft 72 hours, unless majority is voting for any player or No Lynch. If a player is hammered, there is to be no more talking. If you accidentally post something after the hammer, you can and should edit out the post.
- Nights last 24 hours or until all players have submitted an action.
- Weekends count for 0 hours.
- There are no extensions.
- Vote by putting player names in bold and red: Bold and Red.
- Use powers by sending a PM to the mod; scum can do this using their Quicktopic.
- Probably some other stuff that I've forgotten right now, but you know the drill.
- Mafia gain this ability: Mafiakill [DEADLY][KILL] - Once per night, one mafia member can use their ability to perform the mafia kill
(this ability is immune to [WARPING] powers and cannot be sold by a merchant, or used by Town players under any circumstance).)
- There will be a known number of mafia members based on the number of players. Mafia share a quicktopic.
Character Creation1. Pick a Species or ask for a random unique species.
2. Decide whether you want:
2A: one random level 1 profession
2B: two different random level 1 professions and a random flaw
2C: a random level 2 profession and a random flaw
3. When the game begins, you will be given an alignment.
Pick a species before the game begins. A player may optionally opt for a random unique species: i.e. you will be given a random species that no other player has selected or been given.
Species gives you unique protections.
Troll - Cannot die from poison or infection, though you can still spread infection. [CORPSE] actions don't work on your corpse.
Pellucid Llama - You don't show up up in the action reports of [ENLIGHTENING] abilities.
Ent - [TWISTY] powers can never redirect your actions.
Letterbeast - [WARPING] powers don't work on you.
Djinn - You cannot be blocked or protected against, though shields still stop you.
Spider - You cannot be killed by [TRAP] abilities.
Poult - [VILE] powers don't work on you.
Impossibull - You roll a 1d10 on Flaw rolls instead of 1d20 (the flaws tend to be more deadly or disabling in the second half of the list)
Vulture - Your first flaw has no effect on you. All your actions have the [VILE] tag.
Beetleswarm - When you die you leave 1d100 corpses. Resurrecting one resurrects all to reform the swarm. All [CORPSE] actions other than Resurrect have a 50% chance to resurrect you.
Parakeetkin - You start the game in a shared chat with all other Parakeetkin. Within this chat, any Parakeetkin can use another Parakeetkin's day or night action so long as the same action isn't used twice in the same phase. If more than one Parakeetkin tries to use the same player's ability, the owner of the ability takes priority. If you are the only Parakeetkin in the game, you may opt at any time for one other player to become an honorary Parakeetkin. A Bodyswapped Parakeetkin can still access the chat, but can no longer share abilities or create honorary Parakeetkin.
Antmen - You may hold up to two Shields, any you start the game carrying one Shield.
Merfolk - You start the game with a single random one-shot ability guaranteed to be different to your Profession abilities.
The Profession gives you Abilities. Each Profession has several abilities in it, forming a tree. To get later abilities, you have to have earlier ones. At the end of every day that you survive, you gain a new level in any one Profession. Specialise in one Profession, or branch out into several. Remember, you can only perform one action per phase.
Player may optionally choose to start the game with two random professions or two levels in one random profession. If they do, they will gain a random flaw.

3. Gain a random flaw.
4. Plunder (name a non-mafiakill ability you think your target has. If you're right, for the next cycle, gain that ability as a one-shot; they cannot use this ability for this cycle.)
5. Bait & Switch [TWISTY][DAY] (Name two targets: in the following night phase, everything targeting one player will target the other and vice-versa)
[PUBLIC]: If an ability is public, there will be an action report declaring who targetted whom, though it won't say what the action was. [UNTARGETED] [PUBLIC] actions are reported as notquitethere targeted nobody in particular.
[DAY] powers mean you can use them during the day.
[UNTARGETED] abilities don't have a target and don't trigger abilities which change targets or trigger on being targeted.
[CORPSE] abilities can only target the dead.
[VILE] abilities are non-fatal powers that nevertheless show unpleasantness or corruption.
[DEADLY] abilities can kill.
[TWISTY] abilities redirect someone.
[WARPING] make you act when you didn't choose to act.
[ENLIGHTENING] powers seek to investigate the movements of a target.
[KILL] actions are targeted kills that can be protected and shielded against.
Rolling the same flaw twice leaves you with no additional flaw.
Flaws
1. Hardcore (all protects on you fail)
2. Blatant (all your actions become Public)
3. Minimalist (If you ever receive an item from a Merchant or a random ability from a Lender, it is randomly given away to a non-minimalist player if there are any non-minimalist players alive.)
4. Hazy (Each cycle you will be incapable of targeting one player, chosen randomly.)
5. Blinkered (You can only target one player each cycle.)
6. Lender (each cycle, one of your non-mafiakill abilities is gifted as a one-shot to a random player, disabling its use for you.)
7. Pariah (you have no vote)
8. Magnetic (your powers have 50% chance of targeting yourself. Powers with two targets self-target the second target.)
9. Lover (a random living player is picked, if they die, so do you)
10. Intermittent (your abilities only work on even cycles.)
11. Fragile (If you are targeted by a level 5 ability, it will kill you.)
12. Guilty Conscience (You die if your vote is on a town player and they get mislynched.)
13. Wasteful (all your non-mafiakill abilities become one-shot)
14. Afflicted (at the end of each night, you gain 1 additional flaw)
15. Squeamish (all your [DEADLY] powers fail)
16. Unreliable (your abilities have a 50% chance of failure.)
17. Mutation (your Species no longer has any effect.)
18. Corrupt (you may only use [VILE] and [DEADLY] abilities if you have [VILE] or[DEADLY] abilities; if you choose not to act in a phase in which you could have used a one such ability, you will randomly target someone with a random [VILE] or [DEADLY] ability that you have.)
19. Tricksome (you may only use [TWISTY] and [WARPING] abilities if you have [TWISTY] or [WARPING] abilities; if you choose not to act in a phase in which you could have used a one of these abilities, you will randomly target someone with a random [TWISTY] or [WARPING] ability that you have.)
20. Usual Suspect (at the end of every day phase, a fake action report will appear saying that you targeted another random living player.)
Players may be gifted shields, and one-shot abilities. They learn at the end of the night phase what new abilities they have and if their total number of shields has changed.
Merchants may accumulate gold. The only use for gold is the Investment ability. If a player has gold they will be told the amount at the end of each night phase.
Players may be Poisoned, Infected, and Doped. They are informed whether they (still) have any of these statuses and what they have at the end of each night phase. If a player isn't told they have a condition at the end of a night phase then they don't have it. A player is informed if they have been Plundered.
All actions in a phase happen simultaneously. If the order matters, [TWISTY] powers happen first, then [WARPING]. [KILL] actions happen last. Otherwise, where there would be ambiguity, the order is chosen randomly. Hide triggers before any other action.
Game Sequence:
Signups: Everyone sends me a species they would like to be.
N0: Each player is given their professions and is given their alignment; then they can send in a non-[KILL] action.
D1: Day begins. At the end of the day, all survivors gain an additional level in any profession of their choice.
N1: Players use any night actions
D2-N2+: the game continues in this fashion, with new profession levels gained at the end of each day survived.
