I went into a major forest retreat in order to kill all of them but I cannot find any at all. It's winter and there is snow in they're forest everywhere. Have they not survived winter?

Legends mode doesn't mention anything about site being conquered and in game there is no icon indicating ruins.

Elves are sneaky, they probably saw you and are hiding.

But, all of the information you need is in your DF game folders. You can continue to search with your character, you can use game tools to find out where the elves are, but you are the only one with access to the information.

No. Use Legends Viewer and find out where they are (if they still exist).

Altough it'd be cool if they migrated, you'll see naked elves (dwarves, goblins and so on) in freezing weather. They're pretty unaffected by it.

Sometimes sites send raids and such, if the elves are at war, the site may be empty for that reason. Or not be empty but only have a couple elves somewhere in tree branches.

If you destroy an elf-house, that’s one less place for the tree-humpers to hide.  And, if they happen to be in that tree, they just might be killed as a result...

Those houses are most obvious spawnpoints. Destroying them would scatter them around and I want them in few spots for maximum efficiency.
