So no matter what, it'd be mostly surrounded by a dome of stone with water inside.</STRONG>

You could get around problems of lag-flooding by making the final break-through on Pause with '.' framesteps.

Yes, but I remember in the last version that I tried something kinda like this and Windows were, IIRC, not water-proof- a wall made of windows didn't keep water out.

End of year 2 update

All facilities are up and running. I managed to get a Legendary glassmaker through a Secretive mood, which should help making the zillion or so glass blocks I'll need to construct the city.

The first of 5 or so levels for Rapture has been fully excavated.

The pump which will be used to fill the city has been finished.

A map archive of the fortress will be posted tomorrow.

I have currently been attempting my own underwater city, but I've run into some problems.

Namely, the impossibility of pumping out water. I build floors over the ocean to pump the water out, but it just flows back in under the floor. The only thing that works for me is building an oversized pump area and watching as it slooooowly drains out.

That, and whenever I embark the wagon starts right next to the water, and the majority of my supplies are washed away.

I will mod in plastic as a resource.  I will then tweak the Dwarven civ entry so that coins are only made out of plastic, and are called "credit cards".
I will make dwarves purchase things with bushels of credit cards.  It will be a mockery of both systems.
It will be stupid.  But it will be gloriously stupid.

Rapture isn't built as one section. It as like 5 sections with 'underwater bus' routes. Just fyi. Also the sections are all different, like Arcadia which is well..arcadia, a beautiful green paradise..And the casino red-district area.

Edit: but i dont care much for accuracy. I think what your doing is..daring : ). Try using computing too for extra luls.

After trying on and off for a few days to find a suitable starting location, I've started my own attempt at this project.

Currently, I'm digging a very large pit near the river.  Once the pit is complete, I will begin construction of a glass dome inside it.  Since the river is only on one Z level, I should be able to completely remove the barrier between the river and the lake.

I want to put the glass dome at least one layer under the surface.  But how many layers tall should it be?

WOW, this is incredibly cool.  I've been thinking of doing something similar since seeing the suggestion on the wiki.

I chose...Rapture, a fortress where the engraver would not fear the censor, where the mechanic would not be bound by petty morality, where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your fortress, as well."

What: A project to recreate the city “Rapture” from bioshock- a massive undersea city- in Dwarf Fortress.

How: Hollow out a massive chamber beneath a mountain. Use rewalling, using green class, to enclose the city. Build the city within. Then fill the outside area with water redirected from a river. The city should be mostly self-sufficient, with the majority of the resources being created inside its glass walls, with obvious exceptions (mining operations)

Where: At the base of the Radiant Points, a mountain:

It is bordered also by the Prarie of Sounding, a savannah, and the Yellow Dunes, a desert. All are temperate and all are Untamed Wilds.

Who: The usual seven dwarves. Group name: “Smallsister”. Fortress name: Shockwaters the Glories of Artifices. (“Estanir“ and “Otungarel Anil Berim” in Dwarfish, respectively.)

Why: Because.

Strike the earth!

More updates to come...</STRONG>

Has anyone built a Rapture yet? I'd like to see screenshots of an underwater city.

I random'd a world...it turned up after 3 min of looking had a tiny island in the middle of an ocean...desiding to "Rapturize" it starting with the original 7 "naming" them (Ryan, Fontain, such and such...) remaking some food stuffs(Chips, Boozes, Candy bars, cigs) adding the useage of eve and adam is ganna be dificult(slugs that drop it and a process involving little girls)and working in a "Plasmid" system(THATS GANNA BE ANNOYING...maybe make it like a equipable wep or somthing with effects)build several seperate funtional areas(Medical, Neptune's bounty, So on so forth)I'll post pics when i get it finished.

If only he named the starting dwarfs after the main crew of Sealab.

I've not tried to build my own Rapture, but I've always been intrigued by the idea of building an inhabitable fortress at the bottom of the ocean. I'd like to give it a serious attempt sometime.

On a related note, I thought it was interesting that BioShock should be mentioned here, considering the fact that BioShock is the ONLY other game I have made any serious attempt to play since I first discovered Dwarf Fortress. However, I was playing DF again within a day.

I know thread necromancy is frowned upon but I would really like to see an underwater fortress.

Something really needs to be done about ice. At the moment it's like some kind of Pitch Black threat where everyone dies at sunset. Feel free to substitute that film reference with one without Vin Diesel.
