Autonomous Dwarven Cavern Rover - not moving
« on: January 19, 2021, 05:26:49 pm »

Tried someting new and failed - and have no idea why:
I opened up the third cavern full of water and pit two tame cave crocodile hatchlings over a cliff into the water. I thought they would move around and map out the cavern for me. But they won't move at all. They are healthy and camping in adjacent water tiles. Cave corcodiles are amphibious and they did not drown so far, at least. I tried to designate a meeting area some tiles away, on solid ground though.
Still after 3 months they did not move a single tile.
Any idea how to make them move?

I've dropped fortress ducklings into such places (also for the amphibious/portable reason), and they sometimes get stuck (one also exploded on impact. Oops) it's like they are stunned, or just want to get out and the only way out is up... But I think it's actually that their programming gets stalled somehow. Are they uninjured?

Yes, no injuries at all.

The only time I’ve been able to get something like this to work well involved a dwarf that had gone start raving mad from a failed mood and judicious use of gui/teleport.

Tame animals will not use their amphibious and flying abilities to path to meeting areas. This is why a duck can get stuck in a tree and not attempt to fly down to the wagon it previously was visiting. It is beneficial for your FPS that birds do not attempt to fly...

If you teleport those crocodiles onto land they might move to the meeting zone.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Oh, that is indeed a valuable hint! So when i have a water-filled moat around my fortress I will have to pit down wild croxodikes, not tamed ones, for them to swim?
