Rogue Race - Dungeonmancer's Thread/Design
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:17:49 pm »

There's some cake in the back...

Welcome to Rogue Race! Your only goal is to build a dungeon from the ground up (or down, and maybe not even with ground!) and fill it with dudes, traps, and more bigger, badder dudes in order to protect your hoards from the hordes! It's the Design Phase! Discuss with your teammates what kind of road you wish to go down and get a general theme for your team. Will you run a fantasy dungeon crawl? A science facility overrun by demons? A classic looter-shooter? You are restricted only by your own preferences! And your team's majority preference, obviously.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask here or on the Discord linked in the core thread!

Trap designs:

Rat Dropper:
You know what's even worse than Rats? Rats falling on your head. The Rat dropper trap was made by a dungeon mancer with problems, Fortunately, the protagonists are one of them. Activated by a series of interconnected strings that are hard to step over, under, and around the rat dropper will drop a swarm of rats down from a series of points around the room, Hopefully dropping them directly on the heroes head, And if not, Providing a sudden and unwelcome swarm When they are traversing a series of string traps.

Rage Rat:
Twice as big, many times meaner and foaming at the mouth, The rage rat is a rat that you could be forgiven for thinking was on an Unholy combination of Steroid and Rabies. The breeder of this particular strain Swears that is not what he did, But some of us have our doubts. Either way, They remain a nasty little creature, capable of tearing chunks out of protagonists by themselves or rendering them a bloody mess when attacking as a swarm.

Revision(for when it becomes time for that)

The Aristorats!:
The Rat King is... not bad. But he's liable to become irrelevant quickly. On his own that is. Our method to stave off that inevitable outcome for a time is to give him minions. After all, what is a king without his subject. This is where the Aristorats come in. Giant rats(though not as giant as the King himself), who will join the Rat King in his chamber and fight alongside him in battle. They're really nothing special otherwise, just rats who are bigger than usual(and proportionally more capable), but smaller than the Rat King. There is strength in numbers after all.

Just here to point out that a Rat King is something else. Although kind of useless in real life, a Rat King could make for a great boss, if you assume the rats in question train together to fight as a unit.

Quote from: Trap Design: Spike Pit
There's no trap quite as classic as a hole filled with spikes. Ergo: hole filled with spikes. This trap is a trapdoor/crumbling platform/pile of loosely packed plant matter(depending on the floor theme) that, when stepped on, falls away to drop the unfortunate stepper into a hole filled with very sharp and deadly spikes. The exact material of these spikes is also dependent on the floor theme.

Quote from: Monster Design: Eyezor
A large pedestal, atop which sits a large orb, armored on most sides, but open to reveal an eye on its front. The eyezor can close this orb to defend itself, or open it to attack. When open, the Eyezor is not only able to see, but also to shoot lasers from its pupil. Due to being a large, durable pedestal and a heavily armored orb, the eyezor is incredibly difficult to damage and kill through normal tactics. However, it has one key weak point: its eye. A shot to the Eyezors eye will do heavy damage to it, and force it to close the eye for a short time.

Of course, to take advantage of this weakness, you have to be willing to stand in the path of the thing shooting lasers at you and strike right back at the source of the lasers. So we expect that the less courageous adventurers will be utterly unwilling to take advantage of this, meanwhile the others will have to survive the laser long enough to hit it in the eye, which will only be more difficult if they do not have a ranged weapon.

They do have one particular flaw of note though. Namely that due to their sheer durability(outside of their weak point), they're generally quite costly. Thus we won't be putting more than one Eyezor in any room that isn't intentionally designed for such.

Quote from: Monster House
There is nothing quite as classic as going into a room with a treasure chest only to get locked into a Monster House. Known by a few names, a Monster House is a room that spawns monsters available on that dungeon's floor when someone tries to open the chest inside. They will be locked inside until all the monsters have been killed, or all the adventurers die. Fun for all. The rarity of the treasure chest and floor it's on determines the monsters spawned.

Quote from: Boss Design: The Duke of Rats
The Rat King is... not great. Not awful, but not great. Honestly, it is less of a boss, and more like something that would be presented as a miniboss on one floor, before being reintroduced a few floors later as just another monster type. We need something better, but... there's something there. The Rat King may not be much itself, but as a source of inspiration it could lead to something great. Enter; The Duke of Rats.

The Duke of Rats is less of a rat, and closer to a Rat-man. Garbed in regal(if somewhat silly) attire, the Duke is a brilliant tactical mind... Or at least that was the intent. Somewhere along the process, something went wrong, his intelligence has be rerouted from tactics, and instead into... musical theatre.

The Duke of Rats is not overmuch a fighter. His claws and fangs are more potent than the rat kings yes, but he possesses less bulk and musculature, leaving him no more durable than a normal human. Indeed, he's not likely to win a direct contest of strength with the average adventurer.
Instead, he toys with this foe, dancing circles around them, subtly guiding the rhythm of the fight with the rhythm of his music(not through some strange powers, people just tend to follow patterns when presented with them), playing dirty, and singing his heart out. In fact, those who play along will find him more willing to present them with a fairer fight. As he lacks much combat ability on his own, The Duke of Rats also comes with a large swarm of rats, whom he can coordinate in battle to distract, harass, and trip up foes.

All in all, while The Duke of Rats may not be what he had been originally intended to be, he is certainly effective in his own right.

Quote from: Puzzle/Trap Design: Stepping Tones
A several sets of floor tiles, each marked with a different note(with up to two tiles sharing each note). The adventurer entering the room must listen to a song that plays, and recreate the tune by stepping on these tiles, which will play the corresponding note. If the adventurer fails to recreate the song, the chest in the room will be sealed such that they can no longer access it, and they will be forced to fight some basic monsters instead.

Quote from: Monster Design: Eyezor(Musical)
A large pedestal, atop which sits a large orb, armored on most sides, but open on its front to reveal an eye. The eyezor can close this orb to defend itself, or open it to attack. When open, the Eyezor is able to shoot lasers from its pupil. Due to being a large, durable pedestal and a heavily armored orb, the eyezor is incredibly difficult to damage and kill through normal tactics. However, it has one key weak point: its eye. A shot to the Eyezors eye will do heavy damage to it, and force it to close the eye for a short time.

Of course, to take advantage of this weakness, you have to manage to actually hit it while it's open. The Eyezors eye opens to fire on a precise pattern, punctuated by an audible rhythm(which varies from floor to floor). When the Eyezor opens, there is only a split second before it fires its beam and closes again. Thus the enemies strike must be timed precisely so that it is already arriving at the eye by the time it opens. Theoretically, the beam could also be deflected to the same effect, but the adventurers will need to know of this in order to take advantage of it.

They do have one particular flaw of note though. Namely that due to their sheer durability(outside of their weak point), they're generally quite costly. Thus we won't be putting more than one Eyezor in any room that isn't intentionally designed for such.

The Gm demands votes

Vioratist:
This rat only desires one thing, To perform for his captive audience! He can't understand at all why his song sends his audience into a rage. Using a claw on his front right paw in addition to his long string-like tail, Held in the other paw, The vioratist will screech out a tune that sends his fellow rats into a frenzy even as he runs it back and forth, Lost in his own little world of musical genisu.

Dungeon creatures under the effect of his "music" Will become more aggressive, fast, and bloodthirsty, such as Turning a swarm of rats into a meaner Swarm of rats.

Proposal: Musical Eyezor
Difficulty: Very Hard
Result: (6+5)-2=9, Above Average

The Musical Eyezor is a solid stone pedestal upon which an eye on a post is mounted. This eye has metal plates that can close and open around the eye not unlike an eyelid. The eye is extremely vulnerable and easy to destroy, so long as one can hit it while the eye is open. This is easier said than done, since the eye tends to open only to start blasting fools. The eye opens on a beat dependent on which floor it's on as it plays a tune with metallic twangs not unlike a steel drum. The laser hurts a lot.

The Musical Eyezor is limited to 2 Floors and due to it's costliness will not appear in every room.

Creation of the Eyezor adds Eyesore to the Protagonist's loot table. The Eyesore is a Rare active item that replaces an Adventurer's eye with one that shoots lasers. Losing depth perception sucks, but frickin' eye lasers. Fires in 4/4 time while active.

Proposal: The Duke of Rats
Difficulty: Hard
Result: (3+1)-1=3, Buggy Mess

Where one noble goes, others will follow like a plague. The dwarves learned this long ago, and now it's our turn. The Duke of Rats is a flamboyant rat-man created in a mad wizard's lab. The wizard sought to create a controllable beast to lead masses of rats to war (rumor is this guy gave the Rat King his brain), but in the process had a number of failed experiments. The Duke of Rats was one such failure. This ratman was discarded in a pit of similar failures and kept himself from going mad by humming a number of tunes and distracting himself. The ratman fed on the other experiments until he gained the strength to claw himself out.

The Duke of Rats prefers dancing and singing to fighting, and will do his best to keep his distance from hostiles. His tunes tend to draw in rats, while his moves are oddly hypnotic. Unfortunately the Duke's dancing can affect the rats he summons, who will join in as backup dancers. The dancing can distract an assailant and make the Duke of Rats harder to hit while potentially causing the assailant to bust their ass instead of busting a move.

Unfortunately, the Duke of Rats relies almost wholly on the rats he summons to deal damage to adventurers.

The Duke of Rats is a Level I Boss.

The Duke of Rats adds the Peacemaker to the Protagonist's loot tables. This Uncommon six-shooter was supposedly owned by a Duke at one point. This Duke must have been a fan of theatrics, as the gun only fires blanks. Scary blanks.
