Petrohawk Telepathic Radar
In order to make the Petrohawk more useful for both scouting and coordinating the Alpha Hive's own creatures, they will be mutated into possessing increased telepathic sensitivity for the purposes of locating other creatures through their own telepathic abilities. This will both allow them to more accurately guide friendly creatures by more accurately knowing where they are in comparison to the Petrohawk's position, and also more readily use their telepathic powers to find enemies and know where said enemies are in relation to the Petrohawk's position.

While this does not directly improve the Petrohawk's combat abilities, greater informational awareness is a weapon in and of itself.

To encourage further evolutionary potential in our grubs, we have lined the sequestration cavern with sturdy, flesh wax, and then shaped into enough incubation pods to give even a hardened star commando trypophobia. These warm, supportive chambers provide comfort, nutrition and heat to a grub, allowing it to focus all of its available energy on fuelling its evolution into a more useful, higher stage life form.

Driller Revision: Sensible Sensing
Drillers are... not very smart. They have an ability to sense vibrations, yet only a crude understanding of what those vibrations mean. By refining the vibration-sensing hairs (increasing their fidelity and sensitivity) and improving the neurological system responsible for processing the resulting signals (providing better pattern-recognition and noise-filtering structures), the Driller will have a much clearer picture of the world around it. They will be even better at plotting out tunnels efficiently, and will be able to distinguish between the tell-tale vibrations of enemy critters and, like, random debris being knocked about by a fellow Driller.

Even if I thought the BBB was a good idea, it's a combat thing. We aren't in combat yet. The centilegs are an okay idea, but without better senses are a bit wasted. Slow and steady wins the race versus fast and blind, as they say.
The Radar... first, I'm not sure it's even possible- I'll ask Draig. Second, I'd like to see how the Pterohawk does in directing the swarm as is, before we go about upgrading it.
I'm voting for better senses for the Ember and Digger. Although I could be persuaded to do Brood Nests instead of one of them.

This is a fair enough point.

I like the idea of more mobile, more aware Embers.

It occurred to me that there is a pretty big flaw with the centilegs proposal. So I wrote an alternative.

Ember Revision: Tortoise Legs
Let's say you have a hot thing, and you want it to cool down. Do you add a few thick prongs, or dozens of thin ones? Now let's say you want to keep it nice and toasty instead. The less limbs, the better.
To improve Ember mobility, four short, thick legs are added, with claws on the end. They sort of resemble the legs of a tortoise. Yeah, okay, they aren't optimal for mobility- Embers won't be zooming around the countryside, or climbing vertical slopes. But the thick insulation reduces heat loss, and the claws provide decent grip that allows for a steady gate that significantly outpaces a Grub, at least.
To further improve heat retention, the circulation to the feet is cleverly set up to heat the [blood/ichor/whatever] flowing from the legs into the body using the [blood/ichor/whatever] flowing into the legs.

In the name of being a horrible person! Also I agree that the diggers could use better senses before the Embers could use improved senses.

I am half tempted to remove my vote and make a 3 way tie.
Alas, I'll go with sensible sensing. Sensing is good, and there is a significant push for a driller based evolution next turn, which would benefit.

Revision Phase 3 - Alpha

Active Thermovision
[Efficacy: 7 (7)]
While the ember is hot stuff (and knows it) the trick is to let it know how hot (or not) the surrounding area is. Modified dermal chitin at the front of the Ember, with covering plates of heavier insulating chitin, allows the Ember to project a thermal spotlight forwards. Heavily modified versions of the grub’s own light receptors can then pick up either reflected IR from the spotlight, or pick up the residual trace of absorbed and re-emitted energy.

The thermal spotlight system means that, once ‘scanned’ a given entity or terrain object will continue to be visible to the ember. An innate knowledge of its own spotlight intensity and radius also gives the Ember the ability to instinctively infer multiple properties of the target, such as density, distance, heat capacity, etc. This should not be mistaken for intelligence, and is as automatic as the triangulation used to infer depth in front-facing eyes. Still this allows it to spit much more accurately, and to aim for the areas where heat will be absorbed fastest.

Without the thermal spotlight to provide a source of known heat, the thermovision is markedly less able to discern additional information about the target. It is still quite good at picking out shapes and targets as the Ember’s brain, while tiny, is capable of filtering out most of the ‘noise’ heat from its own body and focuses instead on the reflected heat.

Sensible Sensing
[Efficacy: 6 (6)]
Enhancing the resolution of the nerves attached to the guide-hairs, as well as significantly improving the ganglia responsible for processing and categorizing the impulses from said hairs, yields excellent dividends. While the ability to distinguishing between motion created by a fellow driller and motion created by something that looks like a fellow driller but actually wants to kill you is tricky, the encoding of a rote series of sensory motions to scan the air allows the drillers to identify one another even in very close quarters and a seething environment.

Outside of seethe prevention, the sensory refinement allows a considerable increase in detection accuracy against moving targets, quite helpful in tracking targets on the surface while remaining below ground. In addition, the enhanced vibration sense gives the driller a better understanding of the soil around, providing a small but respectable increase to their digging ability.
