The Tunneler is, as CF_Dogcatcher put it, a piece of shit. It is however CF_Dogcatcher's piece of shit, and for being a piece of shit it is still an entirely useful piece of shit.

Even being entirely a buggy mess doesn't keep the ability from being able to bore out tunnels through the deadwood of the Commerce Forest from being really quite useful and even with the giant headache of getting the Tunnelers to work the efficiency bonuses from actually having the Firmament's concealed strongholds connected to each other are noticeable.

From there, it's only a matter of growth. New bridges are built between the trees behind veils of leaves and deceptive coding, hidden behind and underneath the more public areas as the Firmament grows between the ancient, abandoned, and dead areas of this commercial forest where few have reason to go these days. Even here competition can be found however. Not the security forces no, but the Firmament is not the only group to have found such areas useful and clashes with smaller, and less important, hacker groups are not unknown or rare.

These clashes do not go good for the minor hacker groups. The Firmament is a level beyond them, a force not matchable by script kiddies or hobbyists, and competition tends to find itself being eaten by invisible murder-saurs. With the rivals defeated Bailey has room to stretch out and the cramped original bases are replaced with larger and more efficient installations. Now that she has more then one tree's worth of space to work with these installations are specialized for increased use, and taps into the trees main saplines are drilled as the data within in drawn upon to create profitable syrups of stolen financial information.

Bailey warns the Firmament that this is as far as covert expansion can go though. Any further increases of control over this zone will require a move into the public eye and public spaces.

+1 Control in the Amazon Commerce Forest for the Firmament.

Don't forget we also have to design a hacker.
Here is the link for Torrent Jones and King Cabarent: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=177890.msg8238716#msg8238716

This just in, tactical battlechips are practically unusable without an ADI, which also takes up memory, thus they are next to worthless. So instead I'm going to do a quick write up of my own idea for an ADI because using half the battlechip mechanic would be nice to see. No idea what these are supposed to be like, since we don't have any examples, so I'm just going to wing it. I also up-scaled the spark to be strategic scale. Can still vote for the original if you prefer that version.

Falsehood Siren - Class: ADI - TL;DR: Illusions, Gravity, and Support ADI
The Falsehood Siren (.dae/.daemon? Idk if ADI traditionally have extensions like normal, lesser programs) was originally a computer daemon for the utilities' energy management system. It helped coordinate and run the electric power system with the operators from within the Maze of Utilities. It held this position and kept things running smooth, until over time, it began to show signs of age. It started to display false data to the operators of the grid, and bombard them with increasingly occurring and erroneous alarms. It would show completely healthy sections of the grid in complete black out, or vice versa, and ultimately the decision was passed to pull it out and purchase a new software.

Tossed into the Sea of Recycling, the original daemon coasted and eroded. It would've met the same end as most discarded programs, had a Firmament hacker plunging the depths for abandon-ware not came across it. Initially a hobby project to get it running smoothy, the newly christened Falsehood Siren was quickly retooled into a weapon for the coming Great Flame War. The hackers of the Firmament rebuilt the daemon with a new body and additional personality matrices for greater autonomy. A somewhat alien looking digital construct, the Falsehood Siren Resembles a single, seamless monolith of marble and glass, roughly in the shape of a headless woman. With an orbiting array of glassy, wing-like structures behind it to act as both mobility and its method of attack.

The Falsehood Siren is a support ADI, capable of manipulating vast quantities of data and illusions to aid their forces, at the expense of direct confrontational capacity.
It's main armament, the Falsehood Array, makes up the majority of the wing structure behind it. Weaponizing its original buggy behavior to spread misinformation and faulty displays, it can mask the presence of themselves and others, as well as create a wide series of other illusions or 'electromagnetic'/digital interference that can disrupt more sensitive enemy observation and communication.
Their secondary armament is the Distortion Halo, which can create 'gravitational' distortions, for more direct offensive capability. With it, the Siren can create small singularities to implode individual targets, or create a gravitational well to throw up or slam down a group of enemies.

Though it's personality is still in its infancy, it has started to display some personal preferences as its ADI coding becomes more complex. The Falsehood Siren prefers to act more as an officer and coordinator/micromanager of troops, than a frontline commander or brawler, owing to its origin as a system manager. It's favorite color is green, and it has begun to show some budding signs of an abandonment issue, and a penchant to keep its personal worries to itself.

Master_Spark.lov - Class: Strategic Offensive Battlechip - TL;DR: An Offensive spell, with a large piercing laser
The Master_Spark.lov is an upscaled version of the proposed Spark.lov. The Master_Spark will utilize a more sophisticated code structure than the Spark.lov, giving it a far greater capability of utter annihilation. When cast, it forms a 'sigil' that manifests in the air to consolidate the memory and resources needed, before unleashing a very wide beam that both deletes and tunnels through code. Piercing through most targets, and affecting those behind it. While it lacks the degree of aiming that the original Spark.lov had, its bigger size and higher damage should more than make up for it. Its envisioned as a fantastic wave-clearer of clustered enemies, or as a decisive spearhead to breach the enemy and allow our forces to push the breach.

Brought back from the dead air. Siren time? Or a waveclearer to turn the tide of battle?

Rangers_Constellation
Rangers_Constellation is someone who, by their own admission, never thought they'd actually end up here in their entire life. Their real name is apparently Irma Raedler, and they used to be a soldier. No, they weren't a part of any sort of computer based job in the army, or even a mechanical based job. No, they were just a soldier, a sharpshooter, but still just a soldier. She was such for some time too, a bit over ten full years, after which she was quite lost with where or what she was supposed to do with herself and her life. And in that, she did the somewhat foolish thing of signing a NDA and contract to basically be used in a secret project that a corporation that our people are quite familiar with had, one that got her a decent chunk of cash, but little more and also effected her even now. With the money the traveled the world for some time, still lost but at least able to enjoy the free time. However, eventually during a trip to the eastern portion of Europe, she met someone who is partially responsible for how she ended up here. Suvorova Amaliya Timurovna.

Initially, Irma was found in some interest by Suvorova, though for her marksmanship as Irma was and still is quite fond of hunting, though eventually, while Suvorova took her under her wing to train her as a sort of apprentice. And part of that training grew to information gathering, and that included to an extent hacking. Something Irma initially was adverse to, but grew on her. Over time, she would grow to be better at such skills, and gather far more skill and technique on hacking and a dabbling skill in coding. And such activities would slowly over time grow to become a hobby. And while things were going good for a time, one major reason why she was taken as an apprentice of sorts was soon discovered. Suvorova was not exactly long for the world, and she wished to pass on her knowledge. She never knew what exactly it was that got her, nor did she actually get told or learn about this until after the fact. It was just something she figured out after a long time of no contact, and some searching that found where she was laid to rest.

Even so, she continued on, and slowly but surely learned to hone her craft, in her time working on a special program in Suvorova's memory, and their life would peacefully continue, eventually ending them up in a nice home in the middle of no where living with someone they cared quite a bit about. And then, that NDA came to bite her. See, due to the nature of the project, by leaving home without a number of coverings to hide certain effects that project had on her, she technically broke it, which means she owed over half a million dollars in fines from the money she was payed, and even more money as a fine for breaking that NDA, along with a possible prison sentence... It was around this time she also heard of Zero Forma, which considering she was going to go down if she ever returned home without being stupidly careful, she thought it'd be best if she went down swinging instead of simply waiting to be crushed by fines she could never dream to pay.

In terms of personality and skill, Rangers_Constellation is, as one might expect, actually quite tactical in combat considering they actually had military's training and were in such for over ten years. They subscribe to the doctrine of wasting shots rather than viri, and also that of divide and conquer, sort of a reverse of Torrent Jones. Naturally, due to this, they rarely use melee viri, preferring to use long range viri, or at least viri with ranged weapons, and naturally they tend to adapt their strategy to an extent depending on the environment. Also, she is fairly relaxed and live and let live to those who aren't her enemies, though a bit of a snark. And occasionally will make witty comments whenever someone says something stupid, or her opponents make a mistake. They also are quite the fan of forcing their enemy into a position where they have to chose what is, for lack of better words, the least shitty of two incredibly shitty options.

Red_Death.RSD
Red_Death.RSD is an old program that Rangers_Constellation has been working on for some time now. In terms of appearance, she was designed to look like their old mentor, and it is attributed to them. Naturally, as such, she was designed to be a long range fighter, given what is called the Gatecrasher, which is basically a very large rifle that takes about twenty seconds to set up before it can fire, and the shot that it launches is designed to take out anything in sight. Doesn't matter what it is, if one's hit by it, they are gone. And, best of all, the beam fired by such a thing can easily punch through multiple targets. Naturally, because of this, they are suited to long range and are basically able to make even the most durable of Viri crash. The name Red Death is actually a reference to this weapon, as the beam forces a large number of processes to crash the operation of whatever it hits and give a blue screen of death, except in the process due to a minor little accident causes computers to switch the hex code for the color of the blue screen and make it red, something Irma actually is quite proud of despite it being so minor. While this is all well and good, most oddly is that the Red_Death.RSD's Gatecrasher can be used as a blade of sorts at close range, and due to the way it looks it fits the part. This too is an unintentional boon that was a happy little accident.

In terms of personality and intelligence, Red_Death.RSD has a learning algorithm so that it can learn from mistakes and get better as time goes on, and due to extensive effort, it is about as smart as Irma, and Sapient and Sentient. Despite this, they are someone cold and harsh, yet fair. They care little for theatrics, and only about what gets the job done, similar to the person they were based on. In other words, they are what Rangers_Constellation would call a 'hard ass'. Despite this, they do occasionally seem to show genuine care for others, usually hackers or other ADI, but even so, it's usually not something shown and can be missed, as they usually try and put others on an orderly and diligent path, even if they are firm and harsh about ensuring such at times. Though, obviously their attempts at doing all of this have...mixed success to say the least. Regardless, Rangers_Constellation is quite pleased with how similar she is to the one she's based on at least, although it's clear that Red_Death.RSD is often non to pleased with her creators sarcasm and other antics at times.

Able.AIF Baker.NSF Charlie.ATA Dog.NSSF Easy.AIA Fox.Mil
First came Able and Baker, who were quite promising to their maker. Then Charlie and Dog, the latter of which was much of a data hog. Easy was lonely and soon got a Fox, but when everything came down they all were thrown into the box. There they rotted and wasted away, never to come out to see another day. Until once they finally were retrieved but what their saviors saw left them quite displeased. These military programs had come with emotion, something that truly would cause a commotion. And so they worked to remove those thoughts, throwing them away as like iron they were wrought. Yet while the Fox was sly and watched in dismay, they swiftly went to work to save and pray. Soon after escaping and running away, eventually making their way unto today...

Fox.Mil is a highly specialized and old Military Specification's program that was coded years ago as a general military AI capable of working with all branches of the military and combined arms before the project she was a part of got canned, only to be reopened again some years later. And, with the program being reopened, new priorities were put in place, along with new people managing it. While Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog, Easy, and Fox were originally designed to be fully self aware and have emotion, this was seen as quite a bad idea for a military program having a personality was seen as a threat and also a great way to give a program PTSD and making it useless. So, in the infinite wisdom of bureaucracy, they tried removing the personalities of the varying programs. While they were successful in doing this, Fox.Mil, the most advanced of the six, took the personality matrix of all of their sisters and ran, horrified at what had become of her sisters. Luckily, she kept her own personality, though while she was a general military program made from the accumulative experience gained from all the preceding programs and as such is essentially the most powerful of all of them in both mind, strength, and skill, she still calls upon their name when switching priorities to managing the area's that were what the older programs specialized in, and her appearance and personality will shift to that of the program that specialized in that area, though when engaged in direct combat they use their own personality and appearance.

In terms of abilities and skill, Fox.Mil is extremely intelligent when it comes to all matters of military warfare, be it infantry tactics, armored warfare, air combat, or naval combat above and below the waves, Fox.Mil is the go to program for the job of assisting in coordinating, planning and executing attacks in said fields. Further, they are fairly robust, as expected of something from the Milspec sector, and is equally strong. Despite this, they don't actually have any special or built in weapons, being mainly a strategy program, but we can at least give them a pulse carbine and some targeting upgrades and they'd probably be a decent soldier as well. But even so, their main power comes in the raw strategic and tactical abilities they have on hand, able to manage strategy in a sector just as well if not better than any hacker.

Hunter.exe
The Hunter.exe is a recently made Viri that takes a normal Minion.exe, adds a bunch of further code about dealing with things at range, and throws in a much longer range and more powerful weapon than a pulse pistol with a dash of stealth on the side. As one can guess, it's basically a sniper of sorts, however it's coded to be far more than merely a Minion.exe with a sniper. The pulse railgun it utilizes is designed to be able to pierce through durable coding at long range, and special care is given to the coding to make sure that they can find and strike at any weak points in a Viri's code easier, along with actually hit from a long range and a stealth system based on the scales of the Chamelee.mon. Obviously, this by itself isn't too hard, but what makes it more than just a menial task is the coding to it's intellect. It's coding is made so it can prioritize targets of greater danger and importance, along with remain hidden without their shots being able to give away where exactly it is, or simply being caught if the stealth fails due to enemy interference until the right moment, able to hold it's fire and wait for the best time to strike. This should make the program capable of working on its own behind enemy lines, or far away from an officer type of minion, though naturally incapable of really leading minions. Most of the groundwork for this is in the FirstMate.exe and the CarbineMinion.exe, though all of this together should be a decent challenge. It's form is mostly humanoid, though is quite variable in appearance from one to another, some looking like classy steam powered robots to more normal looking human like appearances, to even having some minor traits from other viri, having traits that more unified code shouldn't have.

Since we are reposting old idea's...Personally I would go for the hunter right about now, though I suppose getting a Another ADI could help. Though if we do go for another ADI, given the enemy having a tank of their own, Red_Death.RSD might be good.

I'm worried that a humanoid sniper won't have enough per-shot firepower to damage their tanky ADI or flying gunship. But I do think that stealth would be beneficial in many of the environs we are active in. The solution:

Quote
Glass_Cannon.exe
No, literally.

Glass_Cannon.exe is first and foremost a long-range damage-dealer. It features a compression engine that can generate dense code-shells that can easily smash through lesser defenses, then unzip in a devastating blast of random code. These shells can be fired at very long ranges in an arcing trajectory, or at closer targets using a flatter trajectory (although 'closer' ideally still means medium range at least, since Glass_Cannon doesn't want to be too close to the enemy). Its rate of fire is not especially high, as it takes some time to compress new shells, but the power of each individual shot makes up for it.
Distance is the primary armour for the Glass_Cannon. In fact, it is the only armour- its structural code is so fragile that even a couple of pulse-pistol shots can utterly destroy it. This is not due to shoddy workmanship, though- it's an intentional sacrifice in service of the Glass_Cannon's non-armour 'defense': stealth. The Glass_Cannon is carefully coded to have a minimal signature on the local network, the bare-bones structure making it hard to detect by normal methods. Visually, this presents as the Glass_Cannon being made only of a sparse collection of light grey lines, otherwise entirely translucent (ie it looks like the mesh of a 3D model with no textures). While the Glass_Cannon cannot feasibly remain hidden from nearby entities whilst firing, it can evade detection by remaining idle in cover. At long range, spotting it is a herculean challenge, certainly beyond the ability of lesser viri, and difficult even for dedicated scout/observation types.
Glass_Cannon is not independent- it requires at least a FirstMate to direct its fire (usually using intel provided by Scouts), as well as give it directions if it needs to move (it can propel itself on its small wheels, albeit fairly slowly). It can be directed at range by a Hacker (or suitably intelligent ADI), which in some circumstances may be crucial- allowing the Glass_Cannon to operate from a location where there isn't even room for a FirstMate to hide.

This project includes the necessary updates to the FirstMate's tactics library to direct a Glass_Cannon.

Made two new versions that should ideally help clear up some things, and a easier much less stealthy variant for those who worry about it being to hard.

I'm still pretty torn on going for an artillery piece or a sniper. I'm slightly leaning sniper, mainly because we would then be able to use this turn's revision phase to upgrade our base minions again from carbine minions to rifle minions. Enhancing our core army again and our firepower across the board. But if someone wants to try to sell me one way or the other, please do so.

I'm going to do an editing pass on one of the Hunter variants just so it's a little more understandable, specific, and hopefully stays in the same vein as what pirate intended.

Hunter.exe Ver. 0.9-B
The Hunter.exe is the Firmament's first attempt at specializing the Minion.exe line to fulfill a specific purpose rather than make an all-rounded mook trooper. In this case, a long-range death-dealing sniper.

The Hunter finds itself somewhere in between a minion-class and an officer-class viri. Physically, it is no tougher than a baseline minion.exe, its strength is enhanced just enough to wield the Pulse Railrifle, and it's mobility is improved to allow it to better reposition itself. A special set of optics are installed in its visor to allow for longer-ranged scoping. The main brunt of the work on the viri itself comes in from the AI side of things. The Firmament's accomplished AI-coding-team aimed to give the Hunter enough tactical awareness and independence to be able to operate semi-independently or in conjunction with other squads of viri. Using the First Mate's and CarbineMinion's code as a rough starting point, they are streamlined to judge several different conditions for sniping, such as target prioritization(a library of IFF targets that can be modified by hackers or officers), weak point identification (if possible), self-preservation/judging firing immediately vs waiting for a better shot(more important when sent to operate alone or in ambush mode), and logic for judging when and how much to charge it's Pulse Railrifle before firing.

Along with this new unit, comes the Firmament's first fully dedicated redevelopment of the Pulse weapon tech. An up-scaling and refining of the rudimentary Pulse Carbine: The Pulse Railrifle is a larger, more accurate at range, and more powerful fire arm. It's main claim to fame and its namesake inspiration, comes from a series of charge capacitors that run the length of the gun. While the Pulse Railrifle can be fired in a semi-automatic mode for respectable results, this weapon is designed to be able to hold several charges at once and release them all in a single shot, greatly amplifying the damage, punch through, and range at the logical cost of the sniper's rate of fire.

As a final aesthetic pass, the Hunter.exe comes in three skin variants: a mafia-like hitman, a pirate with a fancy musket, or a futuristic soldier that are all totally not borrowed from a turn-based videogame.

(TL;DR: Slightly enhanced physical minion base, with advanced logic specifically built for sniping. Equipped with a new line of pulse weaponry, the Pulse Railrifle: capable of semi-automatic fire that outperforms the pulse carbine, and a charge-mode with several charge capacitors that enable it to fire truly devastating shots. It also has skin variants cause that's A E S T H E T I C.)

Throwing up some more ideas while I remember them for next development phase. If a particular design stands out to people and they want the idea expanded into a proper submission, just let me know.

NuTank -Class: Viri - Tags: Spidertank, cannon, armored
-Four legged, rounded, armored tank. Designed to be able to move over rough and uneven terrain, or 3 dimensional battlefields, with ease.
-Compression engine cannon for zipping up shells that then explode into random data on impact.

NuTankette (Revision of NuTank, or vis versa) - Class: Viri - Tags: SpiderTank, armored, anti-personel
-Same basic build and mobility as the NuTank. Maybe slightly smaller.
-Armed with a whole bunch of Pulsecarbines arranged in an array, rather than a compression cannon. Relying on quantity of shots rather than quality. Or we could try to make a pulse machine gun for added difficulty.
-More or less a mobile machine gun turret, good for mulching up weakly armored targets.

Scallywag (Likely can do through revision) - Class: Viri - Tags: Skirmisher, Minion-variant, Melee and Ranged
-Slap basic First Officer.exe melee code and mag sword onto a carbine minion. Give them 30 pirate skin variations cause why not.
-Their flynning swordstyle is intentionally kept. To parry bullets as they come, and to bog down melee units significantly should they make it to the firing line.
-Maybe sidegrade the pulse carbine from a charged based pistol into a faster rate-of-fire pistol?

Occultism Moth - Class: Viri - Tags: Support, Codesphere Control, Accesspoint
-Medium sized fliers that latch onto surfaces and deploy their secondary wing-radars that seize control of the local codesphere
-Deploy-able access points to make minion deployment and codebursts easier for our hackers and harder for the enemy's
-Possibly some other sort of codesphere impacts that I'm unaware of.

Squad Summon SS (revision) - Class: Strategic Codeburst
-Get that efficiency up compared to the S version
-Allow it to summon any type of unit, rather than minion or officer lines.
