Hardened Individual?
« on: January 09, 2021, 07:35:40 pm »

Having recently dealt with my latest harvest of Goblinite through mass Marksdwarf fire and subsequent mop-up by Axedwarves, I found many of the military dwarves now have 'He/She is a hardened individual' in their profile. Does this actually do anything, stress-wise? And do only soldiers gain this, or can any dwarf do so if they witness enough deaths?

While I don't remember hearing specifically about the "hardened individual part", it should be a sign of increased discipline.

Discipline is what keeps your dwarves from running away at the sight of corpses, battle, or simply dangerous creatues.

 is getting used to tragedy.

Is all on the stringdump extracts. Though i don't know quite how, but congratulations for getting dwarves this far without a mental break.

A "hardened individual" is a measure of how detached the individual is, where the ratings are
"Has experienced some tragedy"
"Is getting used to tragedy"
"Is a hardened individual"
"Doesn't really care about anything anymore"
But this is not mentioned in the current wiki...the concept is only referenced in this ancient wiki page.

Because DF shows how used to tragedy the dwarf is, I suspect the the concept is still in use and still works the same... the hardened individuals will be less upset when seeing dead bodies, but maybe it also reduces the benefit of seeing happy-thought things. Any dwarf can get it, but good discipline and ability to handle stress (and low nervousness?) probably increase the odds of not going crazy while getting it.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Oh, apparently it counts for outdoors too, at the side there's a field list of the grouped things.

Dwarves need to be beaten a undisclosed amount with high discipline i guess to react to high tragedy

And uhhh that's wierd.
Code: [Select]
109 -20/-10/-5 was very embarrassed to be uncovered lately Outdoors Having... no clothes makes dwarves go full outdoorsy naturalist. Um ok game.

I feel like the outdoors trait would be adequate for a specialist no clothing token or something similar, to properly modulate the outdoors field to being max. And how dwarves aren't already totally immune to rain spam after repeating high intensity outdoors exposure im not 100% sure.

Maybe the memory system simply isn't effective in getting across these additional thought modifiers if they still exist.

>Conducting a meeting in a dining room is as traumatic as your own dead mother coming back as a zombie and trying to kill you

Kind of fuck this game sometimes.  It's not still like that, is it?  No wonder people hate nobles in this game.

I don't think so, no. My Mayor was having issues with that 'no office' thing for a while, but it seems that its effect on his stress was minimal (though the numerous masterwork roasts may've helped). Still, the nobles also caused me to lose a legendary crafter due to beating from an accidental mandate violation, so feck them with a rusty anchor.
