Dwarves and engravings (or other art)
« on: January 08, 2021, 09:40:28 am »

Hello, I have a question, do dwarves actually understand and  feel anything from engravings? I think they like engraved rooms, sure, but does the contents of the said engraving (or statue) give them feelings? Seeing an object they like, a dwarf they hate, an event that makes them sad, does it make them feel/remember something?

Dwarves who encounter detested vermin (or even an artistic rendering of one) may experience a negative thought. Being hated by some dwarves does not prevent the vermin from appearing as a positive preference for other dwarves. Be careful when selecting engravers - a fortress full of hated engravings can lead to civil unrest.

It at least does for preferences. Edit: The engravings page contradicts this, saying that dwarves don't admire engravings.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

While neither confirmation nor denial, I can offer this data point regarding engravings and 'admire art' needs..

If all dwarves in a fort have only the need to admire art, have no jobs, are otherwise idle, and are placed in a generic meeting place filled with masterwork floor engravings, their AdmireArt need goes unfulfilled for many consecutive months.

hmm, well that sucks, but I'm pretty sure it's on Toady's long list of to-be implemented features.

FWIW, I've never seen a comment by a dwarf that they've either admired or dis-un-non-admired (lol) an engraving.  And I have the game configured to show me ALL messages (as far as I know how to anyway).

Yeah I know that, my question was does the contents of the said art change their reaction. But I didn't know they could un-admire art, that is interesting

Pretty sure I've heard that the content is not yet coded to affect the dwarfs yet. Maybe in the future, but that's just what I heard so take it with a grain of salt, and "un-admire" was just a joke.
