They are all made "ex nihilo". The first 7 on start and first 2 hardcoded immigrant waves. Why not? They could had come from the land far away.

Does anybody know how to become an elephant man in adventure mode? I literally did all advanced world settings possible to increase chances.

You could always go back and play an earlier version of the game. That's how it used to work.

Not sure that "make the game less of a simulator" is anywhere in the development plans. Maybe add some stand-alone fortress mode thing? But, then again, why not just play a stand alone site development game, rather than wait for Toady to find the time to build one.

Next best thing is to use [LAYER_LINKED] like the batpeople and other subterrenean civilizations do to remove traces of your civilization from the surface, with the added benefit of adding more subterrenean pets and resources from all 3 layers.

Though i might recommend [USE_NON_EXOTIC_PET_RACE] to keep a reasonable lid on what creatures you can actually tame at the start.

I suggest that as adding OUTSIDER_FORTRESS. Like outsider adventurer, but for fortress mode (because link to entity in current game is only way to manage resources for embarking).

Nope, just dispensing some modding advice how they could achieve their desired suggestion result but yeah, shonai's more succinct to the point and i didnt really engage with the suggestion which seemed very flat. There are some long term goals about scenarios which might be applicable such as maybe saying your band of starter dwarves have been exilied for something or are castaways and wont recieve any official dwarf-state help.

At a certain point, layer linked will change maybe in favor of more visibility of underground civilizations and this kind of 'cheat' will be no longer applicable in practice for having populations offscreen and off the main overworld civilization map to give the illusion dwarves may be rare.
