Artificial Waterfall

So I've been experimenting* on my river. I've blocked off half of it with floodgates and am starting to screw around with screw pumps.

A few questions:
How do they work?
Does water have to be directly under them?
Where does the water go to, after being pumped?
Can I pump water from a few layers down, then drop it off a ledge, i.e. artificial waterfall style?

*Completely bastarditizing, that is to say.

Can't you just find all this info on the wiki?  and doesn't this belong in gameplay questions?

but basically when you build a screw pump your able to specify its pumping direction.  It pulls water from one space to that direction and one space down and puts it out the other side.  The pumps will only take water from one z-level below.

Mm. I'd just figured it all out, but I can't delete topics, so...
