Enough of it, and that is not the problem. Blish doesn't has any gills or anything. Only way it absorbs oxygen is the passive absorbtion it does from every outer cell.

I wasn’t aware it even used oxygen.  I thought it was anaerobic.

Differentiate our inner cell layer (or our outer one) into two layers with our new middle layer having primitive nerve fibers connecting the various parts of our body.
