Henric... is back in the graveyard. He notes that he very nearly performed magic, and witnessed what must have been a very magical event. It appears that his magical education is progressing rapidly.

He approaches the person made out of plant matter, and extends a hand (paw?) for him to shake.

"Henric."

(I don't think so.  Although, looking at it, Bird would have the same orders regardless, be he a three-pound corvid or a winged T-rex.)

Ah yes, I have a habit of copying the character sheets from the last turn, writing the turn above it, and then posting it without a single intelligent thought. Which kind of defeats the purpose of posting them with each turn, I suppose.

Alright, that sheet looks good enough to me, Nature. Thanks for naming the local county for me, coming up with names is difficult.

Thanks, how I came up with it was I thought of a word and took away a letter, also I thought a sparring accident would make more sense than an assassination

Tom takes the proffered hand, and retracts the vines around himself. Their Lively strength was quite useful, and he and his fellow comrades  would likely need them as well. It was going to be a long road ahead.

"Tom. Well, Henric, not to alarm you, but it seems we've been Inverted. To be perfectly honest, the Heptarchy only really considered this an academic possibility. The Fell Lord's servants were never particularly talkative about what made them tick. I suppose that makes us pioneers."

"What do you know of magic, Henric?"

Henric replies in an archaic but comprehensible accent, the lead in his teeth clinking lightly as he speaks.

"Ah. Inverted. So do we serve the fell lord now?"

"I don't know anything about magic. I'd like to learn. Could you teach me?"

Revenant: Dark Flame
« Reply #82 on: January 19, 2021, 04:13:31 pm »

The flame engulfing Tiim flares up, brightening to a thermite-white blaze. Something inky-black seeps out from the inert corpses and, screaming, streak towards the blaze, fueling the flame until it becomes a massive fireball.

And then it's gone, the fire suddenly snuffed out. All that remains of it is a faint whisper on the wind.
"You'll regret this."

The whole graveyard suddenly feels very still. Peaceful.

Quest complete: Dark Flame.
All player characters level up!
+1 Attribute point
+2 Skill points

(Completing a quest awards a levelup. Common quests give 1 Attribute point and 2 Skill points. Shorter quests can give less, while more involved ones can give more.)
(Attribute points and skill points can be saved or spent at any time. Attribute points and Skill points are separate and non-interchangeable.)
(Raising an Attribute costs one point to raise per level from -2 to +1. Raising from +1 to +2 costs 3 points. Attributes are capped at +2.)
(Gaining a new skill at level +1 costs 1 point. Each level thereafter costs 2 points. Skills are capped at +4.)
(Skills can also be gained and improved through training, learning, or experience.)

(Levelup information added to OP.)

Shalva
Mrush'shalva cautiously approaches the human preistess and appologizes for the disruption.
"I'm sorry about, um, all of this. I hope that you're all right!"
"I'm not hurt, if that's what thou mean. Is it really over, though? I can still sense activity in these zombies."

Shalva feels an intense feeling of heat at her back. It overwhelms the feeling of coldness to her bones, and despite being a terrible heat, feels... pleasant. She looks over her shoulder and glimpses a towering inferno. Which then just... vanishes.

"Ah... never mind. I suppose it is over, then." The preistess says in her strange accent.
She holds up a palm which eminates a horrifying, twisted brightness, then closes her hand to stifle it.
"It is my duty to destroy the undead. But I will not overlook the fact that you helped me. Do thou not serve the Fell Lord?"

"CAW!"
A black bird lands on Shalva's shoulder... shoulderbone. From this close, she can tell that it's not really alive, but it doesn't seem undead either. To the magical vision originating from her eye sockets, it appears to be a perfectly normal living bird, but it feels... strange. Not the same substance as the living person before her, but not the same shape as the zombies and revenants she's encountered so far. The imprint of the thing's soul is like an undead in the shape of a living thing.

Bird
The bird circles over the graveyard looking for anything tasty or interesting, but is quickly turned off. Nothing but rot and decay. Too old. Need something fresher.
Yes, something very fresh is what it needs. It needs to get something fresh and juicy, and then interesting things will happen.

The fire-witch is drawing something out of the bodies. Something black and thick, like tar. It makes good fuel for the flames. Seeing this makes the corpses even less appealing.

The bird decides to land on the snakeleton's shoulder.
"CAW!"
And caw loudly just in case its presence was too subtle.

The crow thinks that it's seen books before. Usually held by uptight wizards in robes. It hasn't seen many common folks carrying books or reading. It's not really sure where books might be found in particular, other than on the person of someone who is currently reading.
Though... wizards and such are more often found in more urban areas. Places with big buildings and lots of people milling around. Places like this village, less so. So most likely, to find a book one should seek cities, or wizards.
Hey, this preistess chick probably counts as a wizard. Maybe she has books.

((Since the opening "quest" is over, updates can probably now start to be shorter and not need to wait for all players, because we're not in a big complicated action scene. At this point you can feel free to pursue whatever longer term goals you might have, look for new quests, and talk to people.))

((Nature, would you prefer to appear nearby everyone else, or raise in the capital city? And in the latter case, would you prefer to begin alone, or wait for other players to travel to that place?))

"It would be my pleasure."

With that, Tom kneeled in the graveyard, vines coursing over the dirt.  In short order, a circle had formed along the ground. As he spoke, the vines arced and shifted about, contorting themselves to match his words.

"At its most basic, all magic is born from four Primal Elements: Earth, Fire, Water, and Air."

"When separate, the elements create  various natural and arcane phenomena, like the weather. But when combined together, these four elements form the Core of Life, the animating energy of all natural creatures. Of course, no two Cores are completely alike, but most follow similar compositions. A fish-Core will have more Water in it than a fowl-Core, for instance, and both will lack in comparison to a Water elemental's Core."

"Because of this universality, most every race has developed some form of Elemental magic, whether they know it or not.  And, until Aldam, that was how it remained."
At that, Tom briefly glanced over towards the Lamia, eyeing the priestess' reaction. Seemingly satisfied by this lack of response, the circle began to shift again, though  somewhat more subdued then before.

"The Empire began to experiment with Non-Core elemental interactions. At first, it was subdued. Ways to make a fire that burned under water, crops that could grow in barren soil. But as time went on,  they began to grow more adventurous, experimental.  And with it came new areas of study. Blood, Metal- What we now call the Compound fields of magic were born in that time.  Most people were appalled, of course. They saw it as  disrupting the natural order, trespassing on the field of the gods. But they were kept in line, assuaged, content to only grumble.

Until the first artificial Core was made.  You must understand, the idea of a Golem was unheard of back them. And with the Fell Lord's army first making headway into Imperial lands, people's minds took them to their own conclusions. I'm sure you know what happened next."

"Oh, no!  No, we don't, or?  I don't think so?  I don't know what's happened, the dread necromancer killed me, I think?  And now I'm... bones?"

Mrush'shalva looks down at herself, holding her four skeletal hands in front of her as she looks through her own human ribcage, and down at her snake tail.  Suddenly, she coils up, lowering her torso down into her coils protectively.  She hugs herself with all four arms and looks up at the priestess, looking as scared as a horrifying hybrid monster skeleton can look.

"Do you know what's happened to me?  Am I a monster now?"

Talk with the priestess!  Also, uh, upgrade presence to +0.  I'll save the skillpoints.

The priestess look annoyed briefly, then her face turns to a concerned expression.
"I'm not sure, exactly. Thou're undead, but thou soul seems to be fully present and intact. I've never seen or heard of anything like that happening before. In technical terms, the original substance of thou soul is gone, but the original shape of it remains, now made from the same stuff as forms all servants of the Fell Lord; as is anathema to Rending Light: Mending Darkness."

She is silent for a moment.
"Aye, I suppose thou're a monster now, but of what sort I cannot say. And thou have harmed nobody, so I shall count thou as a friend, for now."

(Advance Influence to +1.)

(Take a new skill, DARK SPIRIT CATALYZATION)

Spoiler: skill (click to show/hide)

Wondering why snake skele lady is so weird and bony, Bird reaches out magically and attempts to convince the creature to be otherwise.

Bird
[Manipulation + DARKSPIRIT CATALYZATION: 9]
Something murky flows out from the bird's toes and into the skeleton's bones, and from there leeches into her soul. It's not an attack, exactly, but it is something of a violation. Tiny phantom limbs of the Lamia's soul reach out, irritated, and try to pry the influence away.

It would seem the intended effect of stimulating activity within that sustance was somewhat successful, at the cost of triggering the equivalent of an immune response.

Shalva
Shalva feels something impossibly cold dribble down her shoulderbone, and then...
It's very strange, and she doesn't fully understand what she's feeling. It's wrong, like the weird itch of a bad rash, but in the core of her bones. She feels something inside of her grow more intense, and in exhange only feels colder than ever.
