Bittersweet Mac Port

So, I login recently to find that the mac version is out, and it runs much snappier then before *ducks*.

However. now I miss things like Regional Prospector and heal.exe  :(

Now, now, lets not start a Mac vs. PC war  :p  .

On a different note, I personally would have a hard time playing this game without regional prospector and I am sure all our Mac users would be grateful if it and other utilities were ported to the Mac version.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using regional prospector, or even heal.exe even though I wouldn't do so personally. A fortress is a big time investment and if the local features are such that it won't be able to support the things you want to do with it, it's nice to know that.

I suppose there's ways to get around not having regional prospector, like having extra miners and doing a lot of exploratory digging before you dig out the fortress proper, but about the 10th time you do that and don't find what you want, frustration would set in.

Regional Prospector is pretty important for anyone who isn't or can't make very huge areas. 6x6 squares in a mountain? Fairly good chance of interesting features. 3x3? Very good chance of nothing but rocks.

While I'm very much against "cheats", I see nothing wrong with Regional Prospector. As has been pointed out above, those who can't run huge areas without the game turning into a damn' slide-show need assistance to hit the things they need in the smaller play-areas they're constrained to.

As for me, I know I'm going to loose eventually, so I'd like to know that I'm going to have a viable fortress before the inevitable doom descends upon my hapless dwarves.

I won't use Heal, Reveal, or any of the other programmes of that ilk since, IMHO, they really do spoil the game.

As do I. A native version would be nice, as the framerate is usually 5-15 better under Windows.

Yeah, same for me. But turning off all the options helps. That brought it up to a wopping 10fps  :D
