Hi all, this is a let's play of a poorly translated bootleg copy of pokemon gold.

Pokemon is a franchise that we all know and love, and my childhood was no exception. As a massive fan of the first generation of pokemon games (one of my proudest achievements to this day is catching all 150 gen 1 pokemon), I was super excited when the second generation was released 20 years ago, and was able to source one of the first english cartridges from Singapore.

It turns out that the reason why I was able to get a hold of pokemon before it's official English release date is that it was a Japanese copy that had been extremely badly translated. I was too young to realize that this was the case and instead plowed through a game that started off making little sense and only got worse the longer I played, eventually giving up when it stopped being able to save my game.

I was recently able to get my hands on a ROM of the game, so what better thing is there to do with it than do a LP of it?

I'll uploading the pictures to imgur, and posting the links here. Because of imgur gallery limits, each update will probably contain a couple imgur albums. I'll try to include all the unique text in the game, as a lot of the novelty comes from the poor translation.

If you have requests for a particular pokemon in the team, let me know and I'll add it to the roster (subject to availability). I'll also be keeping a few backup saves, so I can backtrack a bit.

I'll be taking name requests as well for each of the pokemon, so if you know that a pokemon is coming up getting the name request in advance helps. The names are limited to five upper-case characters, so any longer name requests will have to be shortened.

Utsugi likely is a pun on the name of a type of shrub. Which would have been tough to translate but boy I wish the Prof. was just named "Shrub". Wakaba references new growth or new leaves - which is a nice name.
