Do you think it could get mainstream? How long can you wear it?

vr being mainstream? absolutely when given time to develop further, more/better titles made for vr and price reductions.

as for how long can i wear it: i put it on this morning around 9ish and when i took it off after playing sword and sorcery and alyx it was 2pm and that was only cuz i got hungry. it could change per person but for me i can wear it for very long periods of time. the index is surprisingly lightweight and comfortable, if sweaty. (that might just be me)

Theres a fair amount of non-vr games that got ports that are decent (and some that arent). Try playing Minecraft in vr for a brand new experience for example, even if just to look around some of your past creations. Subnautica is pretty fun in vr (hehe). Horror games are absoluetly terrifying if thats your thing.
Boneworks is very similar to HL: alyx if you like that and end up wanting more.
Stuff like beat saber and Superhot VR are a good time.
If you get the urge to be social, something like vrchat or rec-room can fill the void in your heart-place during these Coronoa-times (It is the internet though, so expect it to be the same mix of fun/decent/horrible/troll people that the internet is.) They have ways of dealing with toxic/trolls but doesn't mean you won't see them / have to deal with them, but theres a reason that vrchat is the 2nd most popular vr game after beat saber.

Apparently 1.8% of steam users have a vr device, so it is slowly catching on.
(Valve Index user (/w full body tracking, cause i'm crazy))

I'm on PSVR, and sculpting in the creative tool 'Dreams' is absolutely fantastic.

I really think Sony should use this combination of VR and art-creation to break into a new market of non-gamer adults, who will take pleasure from realizing their ideas.
Becomming God (= almighty creator) by spending around 1000$ seems like good value, - the fact that this box under the TV can then also be used to play games is just a bonus.  :)

My top picks would be The Room VR Dark Matter, probably the best VR escape room game I've played. Think it took me8ish hour to complete but as with puzzles you may solve it faster or slower so hard to gauge.

Beat Saber is also lots of fun if you enjoy Rhythm games.

And for a little action, Boneworks is quite fun.

I picked up a VR stealth bundle recently, with the two Budget Cuts games, Unknightly (sort of a VR Thief), and Espire. So far Espire has been pretty good, with entertaining level design, good enough voice acting, and enough story to keep things moving. It's not quite MGS, but for modern military sci-fi sneaking action, it's solid. Unknightly could be good, but it definitely feels like a direct adaption of Theif: Deadly Shadows to VR - with all the aging that comes along with that.

As for other games, HL: Alyx is easily the best game on VR, but I've also enjoyed Doom VFR, Duck Season, Raw Data, Job Simulator, and H3 (Hotdogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades). To add to the list of non-VR games that translate well: Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky, The Forest, and pretty much any racing game tend to bridge the gap smoothly.

i ended up getting boneworks and the walking dead: saints and sinners cuz it looks like a vr version of the telltale games, which i can get behind.

as a side note; i wear glasses and sliding the glasses so they're just inside the corner on both sides by the face gasket thingy works wonderfully well for some reason but im considering getting new glasses with an even thinner frame for these.

I have an HTC Vive.  One issue with many games is the need for a playspace - some you can do sitting (about any space game), but some just really need space to move around a bit.  Cordless would be fantastic, as I often have to stop & unwind cables.  Movement can be an issue, as "standing" games need you to do some interaction - which can cause vertigo.

Here are some of my top picks.  Not sure what newer games are out there, as I haven't looked at any new VR games for a year or more.

Experiences:
$10 but worth it. The Blu
Very short, but a fantastic experience to showcase VR.

Free:  Trials On Tatooine
Short, another showcase.  Absolute must try for any Star Wars fan with VR.  Standing there and seeing the Falcon come flying in to land beside you just gave me the chills.

Games:
$30 Budget Cuts
My absolute top pick, decided I'd be buying it from the first time I tried the demo.  Get it.  Avoid the robots.
Great take on movement style - pistol shoots a marker, and you get a handheld orb showing the view from the marker - move it to your face to "step through"

$20 QuiVR
Man, what to say.  Archer game.  QuiVR Vanguard ($15) is basically the original demo, and QuiVR is the "full" game.  The demo was one of my top games when I first got my headset.
Vangaurd is a defense type game, where mobs attack your castle gate.  The actual game is a more mobile thing, where you defeat waves of enemies & advance through a canyon, fighting more difficult things.  Two different playstyles.
Neat take on movement too, as you shoot arrows at portals to move to there.

$20  Vanishing Realms
Fantasy setting, fantastic game.  needs a bit of room to step around in, as you're swinging your sword, or sidestepping missiles.

$15 HoloBall
Ever want to be in a futuristic arcade racquetball arena set in a destroyed landscape, playing against a robot?  Now you can!  Racket.  Ball.  Big cube-cage.  Try to serve the ball past the robot face as it mocks you.  Killer soundtrack (Dance With the Dead)

$15 Space Pirate Trainer
Fantastic environment.  Two handed shooting as swarms of drones try to kill you off.  Can set each hand to different weapon types, or even a shield.  Good soundtrack as well, just wish it had volume controls in-game.

Free  Rec Room
Multi-user environment where you can partake (solo or in groups) in a variety of activities.  Disc Golf, Paintball, I really don't even remember what all it has.  Has a "big quest" dungeon type of setting, where your group goes through, killing enemies until you get to a boss room.  Worth looking at since it's free & all.
Some people get irritated by all the children playing, as there is audio chat, and kids being kids instead of "pro gamers".

No games like the ones that made the Wii a blast to play?  Like Advanced Wars, Destroy all Humans, Mario Party, Super Smash Brothers?  I mean, sure, they were all games beforehand on normal controllers, but they made use of the new control method to really let you feel like you were moving.
...and yes, I know 3 of the 4 are Nintendo exclusive.  But Destroy all Humans was basically a Playstation game that was a lot more fun when you could actually whack and zap those pesky humans with your controller instead of just pushing buttons.

Or like Dance Dance Revolution and their ilk?  VR might actually be easier to set up than that mat that plugged into the console.

Some more recommended games (in addition to the already mentioned masterpieces SUPERHOT VR and Beat Saber:

Scanner Sombre Fantastic experience, exploring a completely dark cave by means of ... laser reflection? Funnily, made by the Prison Architect guys
Audio Shield First VR game I played, loved it. I have the feeling though that something got broken in a later update, it felt much worse when I tried it recently.
Star Trek Bridge CrewHilarious with friends, I haven't tried the solo mode yet.

Also, something not mentioned yet ... a VR headset is really good for physical fitness. 45 minutes of
BoxVR is about equivalent to the same time on an elliptical trainer at moderate settings. But more fun :D
Pistol Whip is slightly less exhausting, but also really immersive ... feel like a badass pistol slinger and dancer at the same time

Any bay12ers tried out Star Wars: Squadrons with a VR setup? I know the game is a little early in its cycle, but it looks like the sort of thing that would get me to buy-in on a proper setup (about to buy a new PC anyway). Or would it be a horrible motion sickness simulator par excellance? (I don't actually get much motion sickness in real life, so I think I'd be fine for a few combat rounds in VR, even with a fast moving game)

Its pretty good in VR. Amazing to be able to track an enemy by turning ones head. Havent gotten motion sick at all in Squadrons.

Cool. I'll look into grabbing a VR accessory then when I put my new rig together. What headset are you using?

And do you think a current or last generation Zen2 or 3 cpu + probably a 2070'ish equivalent graphics card would have enough power to pull it off in VR? I'm kinda assuming it would be a bit of overkill to tell you the truth, but I've got a pretty open budget for my new box.

Heck, I don't even remember when I bought this machine; Windows 7, i7-3770, 12 gig ram, and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070.  I also have the HTC Vive, not the latest headset, so I'm not sure what the newest VR headsets require.

Also, if it matters to you, I did see something this weekend about the Oculus will soon be requiring you to use your Facebook account (as it's owned by Facebook).
