Bismuth crystals: a new manufactured gem
« on: September 25, 2020, 10:02:10 am »

Currently, the only use for bismuth is for bismuth bronze and looking pretty.  Therefore, I propose a new use for bismuth: bismuth crystals.

Bismuth crystals would be manufactured at a Metalsmith's Forge or a magma forge.  They would require a bar of bismuth, and they'd require a bar of fuel at a conventional forge.  They'd probably come out as a small bismuth crystal, which could be used for encrusting goods, but they'd also have a chance to come out as a large bismuth crystal, and you have no control over which one happens.

And if you don't know what bismuth crystals look like, then just look at this gorgeous image:

Were these crystals known before 1400? I hope they were, since they are beautiful enough to be included in.

However, other uses might include dyes.

Yes, they were.

However, as I understand it, it doesn't seem that they can be cut like gems, so if that's true they would have to be their own thing separate from the whole gem mechanic with the different types of cuts.

Hmm, you're right.  They probably would have to be their own thing, or alternatively just gems without cuts, though I'm not sure that's possible.  Either way, I'd still like to see them included.

Decorative metal plating should be a general thing anyway. It's not like gilding on its own wasn't popular enough to apply to every goddamn thing if you could afford it.
