I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Is the pattern:
Each number that isn't 8 or 1 must be followed by 8 or 1, and 8 or 1 must be followed by a number that isn't 8 or 1.

Is the pattern:
Each number that isn't 8 or 1 must be followed by 8 or 1, and 8 or 1 must be followed by a number that isn't 8 or 1.

That might be true according to the pattern, but it is not the pattern, no.

You have to provide a counterexample (something that fits your pattern but not mine or vice versa)

Sorry! I'll give a couple.

3, 1, 15, 11, 10
and
9, 8, 7, 1

both fit the pattern.

If I understand that correctly, generally no.

However,
1,2
1,3
and so on were confirmed here.

Should I give a hint?

Hold up, there must be something about the ordering, since [3,1,2,8,10] passes but [1,2,3,8,10] doesn't. The numbers 1 and 8 are obviously special, as has been proven via the unnecessarily numerous pairings of them with other numbers.

[3,1,2,10,8]
[10,8,2,1,3]
[10,8,3,2,1]
[3,1,2,8,10,1]
[3,1,2,8,10,8]
[3,1,2,8,10,18]
[3,8,2,1,10]
