[10,8,2,1,3]
[3,1,2,8,10,1]
[3,1,2,8,10,8]
[3,1,2,8,10,18]
[3,8,2,1,10]

These match the pattern

18 is special too, then, and swapping numbers that are next to each other, but not two steps away from each other ruins the order. Based on a hint earlier "1s and 8s must be followed by other numbers, and other numbers must be followed by them" is a subset of the correct answer. One special thing I can think of one, eight and eighteen is that they start with vowels while the other single-digit numbers don't, so just to throw something at the wall, I'm giving this guess of a more general rule:

numbers that start with a vowel must be followed by numbers that don't, and numbers that don't must be followed by numbers that do

This fails to explain is why [18] passes on its lonesome when [1] and other single-number sets don't, and why [1,-1] doesn't pass, but I'm counting on the counterpoint to be informative.

That's correct - any inconsistencies in my responses are human error on my part.

Here's how I wrote it:

"Numbers alternate between starting with a vowel or consonant. Patterns can start with either a vowel-leading or a consonant-leading number.
Ex: 'e'leven, 't'en, 'o'ne. (Letter doesn't matter, just vowel or consonant.)"

I think a single number either always succeeds or always fails depending on interpretation.

Huh, I expected that to be wrong. Lemme see if I can think of something.

Spoiler: New pattern (click to show/hide)

[5,4,5,6,5,7,5,4] passes.

Very good one! However "one" technically starts with a consonant. cf. "a wonder" not "an wonder".

The spoken word starts with a consonant sound, the voiced labiovelar approximant, but the written word begins with a vowel letter, 'o'. Though these two meanings of the words are correlated, they aren't always completely so; but it's not wrong to say that "one" begins with a vowel, as long as you know you are talking about writing and not sound.

I agree that it's not wrong to say so.

Curiously, linguists have no idea why we started pronouncing "one" this way. Before around the 14th century, it was pronounced the way it looks, which is still preserved in derivatives like 'only' and 'alone'. Somewhere in southern England, somebody innovated the wun pronunciation and it took the entire world by storm (eventually).

And you thought uptalk was bad!

Maybe some king somewhere mispronounced the word, and the court was too afraid to correct him so they started doing it as well? That's how a number of fashions came about, such as keeping your pinky extended when you sip from a tea cup.
