Zones just doesn't work for me
« on: August 18, 2020, 01:40:17 pm »

Hello! Im new to the community... Thats a great game but i got a little issue since few days ago; zones stopped working for me. First I noticed that doesnt matter how or where i place it but it didnt let me to set a "fishing zone". I press "f" and nothing happens; doesnt appears the "F" For customizing settings. Same happens for Water Sources, im unable to do them. Also just now I noticed that i can't do a Garbage Dump zone i just press the key but doesnt let me choose settings or dont recognizes it as the zone i want it to be. What im missing or doing wrong? Thanks in advance :)

I think it sounds like just learning how to do zone. Did you define the size of the zone first, and THEN tell it what kind of zone?

Yes, i make the rectangle and then it doesnt lets me to choose Garbage Dump, Fishing or Water Source, I can choose the other ones but these 3 no... Its rare because i got a Pen/Pasture and a Plant Gathering zone and they work, its when I press the choosing key that nothing happens...

Did you make changes to the DF keybindings?

Zones can be set to multiple types, so if 'n' sets it to a Pasture but 'd' does not set it to a Dump, not sure what else to consider...

I play "vanilla" settings I didnt touch anything... I doublechecked and all options are "normal" It lets me choose all options except Fishing, Water, Dump and Animal Training To be concrete. All the others work perfectly (hospital, meeting zone etc) Im using the latest version 47.04

For if somebody is curious or have any idea about. This is my current Savegame. If you can do a Fishing zone on it it means its my game that became corrupted for any reason and maybe a re-download would work... if not it means its the savegame who's corrupt ...

Edit: I tried to download again and put the save on it and problem persists...

Im noob and dumb i just realized it works! Just that has no options so i was thinking it wasnt working. Thanks for wasting your time on me. You can delete or close this post

My issue was related that for some reason LGRAY DGRAY and White looks THE SAME in my screen so i had no way to see if im enabling or disabling something. If somebody has this issue too just backup the file in data/init/colors.txt and edit the values for that colors to any other that its more easy to see.

Sounds like you might want to dial down the gamma on your monitor, then.

I dont wanna do another post but.. in what conditions a Windmill breaks? I got this scheme (Its on side view, each component its on a different Z Level and aligned by a channel over the next one)

▓ <- Windmill
░ <- Vertical Axle
░ <- Vertical Axle
▒ <- Gears
P <- Pump

When I turn off the gears with a lever, short after the windmill its destroyed... I been googling and wiking about it and i didnt find a definitive answer about this behavior. What can I do?. Sorry for asking that much...

PD: Theres no Building Destroyers arround, also theres no Ice im on a Temperate land in last days of summer

It's in the wiki. Read the section on disconnected gears.

Yes, turning off a gear with a lever makes things cave in onto it. I always found this a baffling choice.

DF is full of little gotchas like that. It's just part of the learning curve.

I always thought of it as shifting the gear (to disengage it from all things it connects to), which basically destabilises anything you had balanced atop it.

It acts the same (perhaps strangely, if you consider the forces involved) to lever-connecting a Support above and off to the side of which is a huuuge mass of built fortress or even bedrock, disconnected at every other point). Pull the lever and it 'shifts', ruining whatever equilibreum you somehow had it maintaining, causing everything it supported to fall (cave-in/disassemble, according to its nature)

My default design for switchable windpower involves a 3x4 walled 'block-house' design at ground level, thus with a 1x2 'inside', protected from most threats. One of those tiles is the levered 'idler gear' sat on top of the shaft with the vertical axle into the belowground (or directly above a millstine/pump, if that close to the surface), the other the permanent gear sat beneath the windmill built (centred) above it.  It takes a little planning to build, rather than a flush-to-ground system with the switching below, but it saves having to properly site the grearing askew in the bottom of the shaft, using up space I'd probably need to dig around to site the pump infrastructure (access corridors, further supply/drain tunnels, etc).  Plus it always used to deal with Building Destroyer threats, at least before flying/climbing ones might cause additional hassle.

(Though a 3x3 blockhouse can wall-support the windmill directly above a transient gear, it's been my habit to do it like that, when tried, to satisfy my inner engineer.)
