You greet the rat and ask it about the fire messages, but it seems too hollowed to do any talking.

Lets walk past the rat since it doesn't seem hostile to us, also try to remember what can make a rat hollow.

You remember your False Hope said something about going hollow...

Look at out false hope and see what it says about going hollow, then look around at the area beyond the rat.

You examine your False Hope: False Hopes signifies an accursed Undead. Carriers of it are risen repeatedly after death, but will one day lose their mind in chasing ever more Hopes.
Death triggers the False Hope, which returns its bearer to the last Flame Idol rested at, but at the cost of all Delusions and Hopes.

You look around the area beyond the hollowed rat; there are more flame messages here and further up is the exit of the alley into what could be a more open area.

You read flame messages; "Attacking ahead", "it'll happen to you too...", "No tough enemy ahead", "be wary of Hollow or enemy ahead", "open area? only poor soul ahead", "message!"...

You enter into the more open side area, there is a small maze of gravestones and half buried coffins.
In amongst the graves are more hollow rats.
You can see that on the far side of where the alley leads is fenced of and a scaffold some kind is in place that seems to reach up to the roof of the building to the left.
There is also an open doorway on the front of the building to the right a ways into the maze, that is blocked by another fogwall.

This area is walled in as well with spackled walls and is more like a back alley alcove with a storage shed turned impromptu graveyard.

Lets sneak around everything here using the tombstones as cover, and look in the half buried coffins to see if they have anything good in them.

You sneak amongst the tombstones to check the coffins; you find some items before your path is blocked by a hollowed rat who looks like it wants to fight.

Chuck the metal shard and wooden chunk at the rat, as it comes towards us, ideally already injured by those things we threw, stab it with our knife
