Spoiler: Mandator Updated (click to show/hide)

Well, I went ahead and expanded the ship somewhat. And the goal is to screw over Jilla's close-quarters sandblaster ship.

EDIT:
Because some people pointed out potential cost errors, here's a summary of the costs.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yep, total is 136, thanks Maxinum.

Well. I suppose that the entire purpose of what I did was to test if mass kinetics were viable. So I suppose you're helping with that.

Though isn't specifically aiming to 'screw over someone in particular' a bit in bad taste? (Do note: Not being serious.)

This being said, now I don't think I'll be able to inflict meaningful damage. At melee range my 'murder boat' only scores an average of 20 hits per round. You Madman have 15 sections, each armored, and those armor sections can nope 2 hits each. Per round. Meaning I need 3 hits to go to the same section in any given round to inflict damage, and you have enough sections to make that not terribly likely. Haven't calculated the odds, admittedly. Oh right you got PD too, but I don't think even that many will nullify that many hits. (But that's fine. PD is for anti-missile, the anti-kinetic is a happy side effect)

Honestly though, Madman; I think even before your update you had better murder potential than I. Oh sure, I'd likely annihilate a small/insufficiently defended ship faster than yours.... But Armor and PD creates a bit of an 'all or nothing' scenario, yes? Where if you can't reasonably break through the defenses... You just can't break through the defenses. While shields are free from the whims of RNGesus (your PD could roll nothing but 2s or that kinetic salvo could potentially align to inflict exactly 6 shots on multiple sections), they can be battered down. Meaning that yes, I believe that lasers are the best weapon at present. Though this is merely theory at present. Shall we see how things work in practice?

(Note: You did not update your shield total, Madman. There is a chance that you fixed this in the time it took me to type this out.)

mmm, I suspect lasers are the best, yeah. They're the cheapest aswell, overall. 12 lasers with 3 reactors being cheaper than 12 rockets 1 reactor or 12 mass drivers with 2 reactors. That, and the defenses favour lasers aswell as point defenses I suspect is going to be pretty damn strong.

Question for kashyyk: do the pd reset their aim per next opponant or per their next round. Say if Jilla shot at Madman first, using up the PD. Would the PD then go back to hitting on 3's against my rockets, or not?

Point Defence resets at the end of the round, just like Armour and Shield regen.

I have a habit of favouring the defense when I design stuff like this, so I appreciate you all analysing and trying to break things.

ah, ok. So we could technically overwhelm the Mandator's defences...

Quick double check though, and it seems the Mandator is underpriced. According to me, it should be at 136 MCreds. Someone else check that incase I got it wrong?

It's entirely possible that I made a second set of cost errors after the first set that lead to me redoing the math for the entire ship. I definitely goofed the shield counter (thanks, Jilla!), after all.

And my huge concern is that with that many kinetics, Jilla, and the ability to jump in close, you can use the multi-hit nature of kinetics to punch through my armor, and my shields won't stop that. Hence the PD mass. My ship is basically a German battlecruiser---it doesn't have the scariest set of weapons, but it's a lot harder to kill than you might think :P

I'll go look through costs again real quick.

EDIT: Done, and Maxinum was indeed right, and I apparently dropped a whole 12 credits somewhere. Probably used a wrong cost for a module, though which one I'm not sure. Anyway, that's fixed, shield total is fixed, it *should* be good now.

Yeah. RNGesus can screw you over, that is true, Madman. Though as you have 15 sections, and I only have an average of 20 hits per turn (that I did actually calculate) at melee range... I do believe I'll scour your armor and exhaust your PD; but inflict little actual damage.

Though I suppose we won't get any further with just theory yes?

Tis not been specified yet if mass drivers work where if one shot generates multiple hits if those hits damage the same section. Considering the risk they already have to put themselves, I wonder if that is, indeed, how they work. It means one shot that gets through with max roll to hit could go through the armour (2 hits), destroy the external (2 hits) and damage the internal (1 hit) in one shot. Which is a cool high to aim for as a mass driver user.

The chance of multiple hits represents Kinetics typically being used as saturation weapons. Rolling high means multiple shots in a burst hit, rolling low means fewer/none. These hits then each roll for a section to damage independently.

I rather expect that we'll find that to be both extremely roll-heavy and also not as powerful as, say, a laser. It'd make perfectly reasonable sense for all the shots in a burst to impact the same spot, and it would provide kinetics with a very different style of use than lasers, which pretty much may as well be used to kite at range.

Also, since armor isn't a one-hit-and-gone sort of thing, spreading those hits out basically defangs kinetics since now Jilla has to roll to get past my PD, then he's got to get lucky enough to land AT LEAST 3 hits on any single segment of armor in a turn to even do the slightest bit of damage, and then he has to do it repeatedly in order to actually kill my ship.

The more this goes on the more I wonder if the problem is with the armor mechanic and not with the guns, honestly, since using lasers likewise requires me to land at least 2 hits to a single compartment, which with only 7 lasers is not likely on, say, a target with the same number of sections as I have...

Lasers do shoot twice, note. But I suppose at this point we should likely put theory to practice to ensure if it's a problem or not.

Also also, Naturegirl; Madman left you 14 points to upgrade your ship with.

Battle Start!

In a remote sector of BLU space, a RED Dominion squadron jumped in to probe the local defences. Alerted by some very well hidden listening posts, the BLU Dreadnought 'Mandator', escorted by the 'Snail' moved to intercept. Long rnage scans reveal the Red force to be a 'Koganasun' armoured Battleship,  accompanied by two frigates, 'The Ayes' and 'T-Lock'.

This first phase of maneuvering will set the stage for the resr of the battle.

The Field (Extreme Range)
 |- BLU Fleet (Short Range)

     |- The Ayes

Huh... guess it was never asked, but are turns simultaneous?

T-Lock will aim to jump to Very Long Range relative to the Mandator.
