As Orrel escorts Christine and Felix to their final destination at the dorms, he finds a very out-of-breath Professor Estelle waiting for him.
"....My apologies, Orrel. The meeting....slightly overran. Still, thank you for your help. I....will make sure you're well rewarded."
The sidequest "The New Blood" has been successfully completed!
Orrel receives 1000 thalers!

With that, the days at Solrise Academy go by. Free Time is now over.

Chapter 1: A Friendly Wager

Part of the instruction at Solrise Academy involves classes in ordinary subjects. Most non-combat subjects are electives, with a few, such as Finances in particular, being mandatory; one of the earliest problems with many retired Knights was their inability to manage their considerable financial stores, resulting in no shortage of cases of retired Knights becoming bankrupt and returning to the Knights to work even beyond retirement. Combined with other issues, initiatives were launched by the Elerian Order to assist their Knights in preparing them for civilian life. Of course, with many students at Solrise attending purely for the academic side, many take up appropriate subjects to pursue further careers, whether it is connected to the Calamities, such as a career in the Calamity Forecast Office, or elsewhere.

Nonetheless, combat is a fair portion of education for combat students at Solrise, and many students often relish the opportunity to show off their skills to other students.
It's a sunny afternoon in Solrise Academy. Class 3-F is currently in a Magical Studies lecture; sharing it with some students of Class 3-B, one of the non-combat classes, the class is generally taught by Professor Estelle, an acknowledged scholar in Arcane Crystallurgy.

".....and that concludes the lecture on the usage of Alphinite for healing." Professor Estelle taps the chalkboard, where a complex diagram explaining the uses for Alphinite in healing, such as accelerating the natural wound-healing processes, is found. She opens her mouth to speak, before the bell rings. She closes her eyes, adjusting her glasses.
"Well, that is all for today, class. By next week, I would like to see five paragraphs on the proper usage of Alphinite for healing, the mechanism through which healing functions, and the limitations it has. You can find some answers in the course handbook, and I will be available in my office during office hours if anyone would like to ask any questions. Now, please enjoy your afteroon."

Kruger neatly packs his things together and respectfully bows his head towards Prof. Estelle while he is leaving. Just outside the door, he pulls out the notes of today's lecture.

"... Maybe that might explain how I don't tend to get a sore throat after using my Arte? A fascinating thought..."

Kruger looks at Lin for a moment.

"Hm..."

He averts his eyes as soon as he realizes he was potentially staring.

As Kruger stopped suddenly right outside the door, a short cat bounced off his back.
"Oof!"
She staggered back a step and indignantly put her hands on her hips.
"Hey, Wallheim! Don't just stop outside the door, dummy!"

Kruger looks to Cattleya.

"Ah... Please forgive this faux pas of mine, Cattleya. Today's lecture makes me think about a lot right now."

He takes a step aside to free the door before looking at his notes again.

Lin caught Kruger's glance out of the corner of her eye. The one she returned made it clear he'd been caught, but she declined to respond; she didn't know what to make of it. Instead, she just packed up her things and meandered out after the rest of the group, taking her time.

Reeve, for her part, had dutifully listened to the lecture of a topic she was already fairly familiar in. Growing up in Southern Erebia, Alphinite was practically a way of life for her, especially with how much she explored, often accumulating various injuries that her parents would reprimand her for after she healed from them. But she listened anyway, giving Professor Estelle her own respectful bow as she packed up, confidently following her classmates out of the room. A five page essay due in a weeks time would be an easy feat.

Rika had listened, but she was already pretty familiar with the concepts; what she did was just an offshoot of healing, after all. She got up from her seat in the back of the class (she hadn't chosen that spot for any special reason; she just didn't want to block people's view) and made her way out of the room, wondering what she ought to do at the moment. She could probably do the assignment in thirty minutes, which gave her a lot of free time.

Delwyn took her sweet time packing up, making it to the door some time after Cattleya had her encounter with a relatively immovable object.

"I guess that's why they don't call him Doorhaim."

"Ah..."

Kruger is now looking in Delwyn's direction, visibly being at a loss how to respond.

"Well, yes, that is an amusing coincidence, this situation and my name, I suppose..."

Orrel had not exactly enjoyed the assignment posed to them. He groaned as he pushed back from his desk, slowly making his way out of the room. Spotting Rika though, his eyes lit up and he hurried over to her.

"Hey, you probably know all this stuff, right? Maybe you and my brother could help me out a little with this assignment. I never really... got this stuff. I mean, I get how it's used in combat, but the rest of Alphinite use is just... For whatever reason it never sticks, you know?"

Rika was surprised when Orrel hurried up to her, but she gave him a pleasant smile.

"Sure thing, hun. We'll sit a spell and figure out what you need help with. Do you wanna study in the library, or head back to the dorm?"

She left it open where he wanted to go. He'd have an easier time learning if he had an environment he could relax in.

Mordecai had his essay half-formed in his mind by the time he packed his things. His Arte, while it couldn't be used on others, was extremely effective at healing his own body after all, and Alphinite played a key role in the process. He estimated that he could have the work done well before dinner. Which was good, because he had something important to do tonight...

: "I was planning to go into town this evening, after dinner. Does anyone need me to pick up anything?"
