Rotting food and Miasma
« on: July 30, 2020, 07:07:00 am »

Is there a way to keep food from rotting or at least prevent it from stinking up the fort? I don't remember it being this much of an issue back in 0.34

I also have an unrelated issue with a large puddle of water that I'd like my dwarves to clean up and cant figure out how to assign them to move that specific water.

Food in stockpiles don't rot. Part time militia store their militia food in their room when going off duty and then pick up new food when going on duty, rather than the old one, which thus rots. Since the rotting food is owned nobody cleans it up (change supplies to "no food carried" for any squads that aren't permanent).

Water: If it's a spill it will dry up through evaporation with time, leaving behind muddy tiles. If it's a murky pool you can either drain it from the bottom by digging up from below, or use the "bucket brigade" by designating it as a water source, change settings to take water from zones only, and designate the destination as a bunch of pond zones (p-P-f, I think). A single pond zone results in a single water hauling job being generated, while multiple zones result in one job per zone (make sure you have enough buckets, or you'll get "out of buckets" job cancellation spam).

You can also let water flow sideways by digging channels, and pump it with screw pumps (you'd still need somewhere to send the pumped water, though, even though it can be a deployable drain to make the water go away through magic).

If the rotting food is not "owned" by a military dwarf, you should check your food stockpiles to see if they are limited in some way (not accepting that type of food, or set to "links only", or full), and create a Refuse/Items stockpile for dwarfs to bring the rotten food to (outside, so it does not create miasma).

But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.
