granting residence dwarfs
« on: July 29, 2020, 06:00:10 am »

Hi,

In rapid succession there have been 5 dwarfs who have asked for residency to kill monsters(5 granted residency, 11 normal dwarfs and 2 children) 1, so I have granted them. Does this mean I have 5 extra mouths to feed?

I was rather hoping to put them in squads, but they appear to be totally inderpendant?

Do I have any control over them?
Can I make them part of my fortress?

Many thanks

Yes, they have to eat and drink.
After some time they may become full citizens and you can put them in squads.
Until then you can not control them. After that they become regulars.

If I'm not mistaken, though, I don't think monster slayer visitors ever petition for citizenship. They just wander around by themselves until they die - which, if you let them into the caverns, will happen sooner rather than later.

As mentioned, monster slayers are mainly a pain as they'll eventually haul their lazy asses off to the caverns to slaughter local wildlife, but first they eat/drink/pray/socialize for a long time, and when they do get their act together and actually go down there they'll immediately get hungry/thirsty/drowsy and return backup. You'll also have to keep the access to the caverns open for when they eventually feel like going down there, meaning you keep the way open for cavern critters to get into the fortress.
Once they get down there they might kill something harmless, causing your dorfs to rush down there to pick up the pieces, or litter the cavern with pieces of themselves, causing your dorfs to get down there to pick up those pieces and getting killed by whatever dismembered the idiot.

Merc never petition for citizenry, but they can be put into squads immediately, except in the leader position: you'll need a citizen for that position.

The others petition a second time after two years, after which they become your citizens fully, allowing you to control them in the same way as your dorfs. They can also go bonkers during those two years due to unfulfilled needs, though (or, technically, the bad thoughts resulting from unfulfilled needs).
