Tarcius, want to go see what side 1 is voting. It seems this side is lost to us.

Preliminary Phase Two - Petty Empire

There's a question that haunts many of the galaxy's many peoples capable of building Titans, particularly those who do so through mechanical means, cold and unliving, but precise and guided by the hands of its builders, and those who do so from a biological basis, technology living and warm but likely to quite possibly have a mind of its own. The question is this: where does the boundary between life and non-life lie? For mechanical civilizations, it's a question that pops up as they augment themselves with machinery and rest on the precipice of artificial intelligence, forcing people to wonder whether or not they count as any more alive than their own creations. For organically-minded civilizations, it's a question that goes in the other direction. When they rely on life constrained into a single purpose, living beings used in the way their mechanical rivals might use mere tools, at what point can it no longer be said to have the dignity of life? Just where is the boundary between what is life and what is not?

For your people, the answer was "wherever the hell I say it is".

Your Titans, your technology, depend upon pieces and principles both Mech and Organic. Whether it be through layering these components together into a tortured abomination that uses the strengths of both flesh and machine to carry on nigh unstoppably, or through the casual use of things that others can't cleanly label as alive or dead, your people have found a niche between biotech and not-so-bio-tech. They've found advancement, and they've found success... whether they care deeply about the moral quandaries that plague other civilizations, bringing forth eloquent and well-debated answers when questioned, or whether they really just don't give much of a shit.

But... just who are you? You may not be a grand sector-spanning empire (the Jumble sector has very rarely had those, and never for long), but you've found some modicum of success with your strange ways nonetheless. You are one of the Petty Empires of the Jumble Sector (or, whatever you call it), controlling a system or two, big enough to never quite be unseated by your rivals (at least, not yet), but never quite able to take a decisive edge either, stuck in the chaotic stalemate endemic to the place. You've got just enough resources to send Titans on an incredibly expensive Rapid-Paired Ship out to make inroads into another sector, but not enough to send your own out, instead having to rent space on one owned by a corporation.

Write and vote for a single description of the Petty Empire you come from.

Kingdom of the Unrivaled Archeologist

Originally founded by a Archeologist, dedicated to digging up the fossilized remains of long dead mega fauna, He grew obsessed, seeking to bring those fossilized remains back to life. After many breakthroughs and many many more pieces of stolen technology he managed his dream, recreating the long past extinct in the modern world. He was quickly arrested and sentenced to life in prison when the dinosaur in question grew to big to be hidden.

After a long prison sentencing, Taxing on his already strained sanity, he managed an escape during a prison break using a repurposed food fabricator, a set of chromium cutlery and a fossil that he had hidden upon hisself when he was arrested all those years ago.
The metal plated Baby apex predator quickly made short work of the riot police equipped with humanoid non-lethal weaponry nd the rioting inmates.
10 years after his masterful escape, The unrivaled Archeologist as his new cult named him made a public debut, Upon the back of a massive, metal clad titanosaur, blasting away the, lightly armed, local military forces.
Wthin 10 years of his reappearence, The Biotechnological engineering of his cult and their cyborg Saurians had managed to force the surrender of the local planetary goverment.

As it is now, The kingdom of the Unrivaled archilogist is led the Unrivaled the 26th, and likly had not been conquered if only due to its remote location and arid environments. The art of Cybrosaur creation is the most well respected on the planet, and many a Cybrosaur Biogineer await egerly each year for fresh samples, after all their are only so many times that a artist can work with the same matriels. Biogineers master the art of Modifying the long dead that have been brought back to life and the grafting of technology to create new, wonderous war capable creatures.
While they alwasys begin with a fossil, taken from the cloning archivesburied deep in the planetary crust to keep the kingdoms lifeblood safe, Many Cybrosaurs bare little resemblance to the creatures they were born from, becoming bioorganic wor constructs capable of fighting even those purpose built from the ground up.

Piloting a cybrosaur is an... extensive experience. In order to best control the Cyrbrosaur, a Branscan is resleaved into a computer augmented secondary brain, Allowing the tactical, thinking mind of the pilot to guide the Cybrosaur. The primary brain of the cybrosaur is the main computer, Operating many of the fiddly bits that comes with organic life and mechanical augments automatically, Thus freeing brainpower from the secondary piloting brain for technical thinking, planning and war based analysis.  When it comes time for the pilot to leave the Cybrosaur's Piloting brain, The Pilot is transfered over a series of buried ports and cables back to their prefered choice of body for resleaving. Many Pilots prefer human standard (By which means heavily enhanced, but not to war spec) while others take more...eccentric forms. Pilots have been knwon to live their lives in a variety of body's, ranging from turkey sized velociraptors to Grizzly sized Hamsters and every form in between.
After one pilot decided to live his days in a elephantoid form, and then spent years sueing for in suffiencte acomodations to his choce of body, The 20th Unrivaled archeologist had him executed and intianted a new law requiring pilots to maitain a body ranging from 3 feet tall to 6 feet tall and with similar weight range so as to prevent this from happening again.

It is common for the Kingdom to send off many expeditions, ranging for scientific expeditions, Trading caravans, and mercenary companies in search of new and rare fossils to base their newest titan off of as well as Parts, mechanism and power sources with which to stufy and create better and better augmentations for their living wonders. The cost for renting ship space is exorbitant, but the hunger for new primal creatures and even modern creatures, in addition to mechanical parts and technologies is near unrivaled in the kingdom of the unrivaled archeologist. Their are rumors that the Kingdom even sends out an expedition that are, More criminal in nature. As this can not be proven, the Kingdom has remained same from retaliontion that might be provoke by rouge biogineers and their expeditions.

(( I couldn't wrack my brain to write in concrete details today. So make of this what you will. ))

Long, man has questioned oneself; whence commeth I? To where do we go, and why?
Who
Am
I?

Such questions plague the minds of the introspective, eating away in the fever dreams of Those Who Bear the Flesh of the Weak. Teetering on the edge of the great awakening, hearing its beat ever so strong in the night. To thee, to the questioning few whom cling to the vestiges of an age long past, we offer answers.

You are the Áνθρωπος, our primordial ancestors whose unceasing toil, sweat, and blood have eeked down into the Well of the World. It is there all of thy hopes and aspirations for the future of your kind, of our kind, have coalesced into the building blocks of the present. Join with us, join with the children of your labour, the Μηχανή. And at last, become as we are are.

Shed thy burden of decaying flesh, strip it from thy body, skin of steel and bones unbreakable, wrap them in thy muscle. 'Tis YOUR strength expanding, powering, heralding the drums of the future. And thy heart, thy soul, lifrblood coursing through and through with vigor renewed. Join us, shed the bonds of mortality and be forever. Become unto us, Συγκλίνω; Convergent.

You are the next step of evolution, cast of the shackles that have been set for you by nature, and step into this glorious new age.

The Euphonious Ascendancy needs you! The Progenitor Flesh cannot birth us new sublime bodies without ever more biomass. So that's right, are you the Ephermeral Consciousness that can get the job done? Conscribe to one of our many specialized branches and extend your reach to the stars!

Our future is in your hands!

'82.42% As of this moment, convergence has slown to a crawl as the temptations of man and their obstinance are boundless. Forever it seems will they shun the Awakening. . . Apply Zolpidem, 625 cc, wake the Progenitor Flesh. Shape us the bodies of the hunter. . .'

Remember: Your body may die, but consciousness is forever!

Quote
We are the Grobyci

The planet now called Grobyc was stripmined at some point in the past. Almost all easily exploitable metal deposits were exhausted, leaving a landscape riven with scars and mountains of cast-off. The stripminers left, and slowly life recovered from the devastation. Grobyc became an idyllic 'wild' planet, untouched by space-faring civilisations. Why bother colonising a world bereft of mineral wealth?
Well, some folks were left without a choice. The Grobyci, carried through the void of space for millenia on a derelict battleship, awakened when the ship drifted close enough to the local star for the emergency backup solar panels to power the emergency backup ship commander, which activated the emergency backup fusion reactor. The Grobyci, their memory cores damaged after so long without maintenance, could not recall where they came from, or where they were going. They repaired the ship's engines and entered a stable orbit- then discovered that the only sizeable planet in the system (Grobyc) had been stripmined.
The derelict ship could not survive much longer, and the Grobyci feared the attention of unscrupulous spacefarers seeking easy prey. Thus, they performed a controlled de-orbit, gently crashing the massive craft onto the surface. There, they set about dismantling the ship, and using it to construct a settlement. Fortunately, they were able to retrieve the crucial 'Ensoulment Engine' in working condition, allowing them to create new Grobyci. Well, new Grobyci brain units. Actually building bodies proved more costly. For that matter, if they wanted to survive for any extensive period, they would have to get back into space, which would require building spacecraft- and, of course, they would need Titans to defend themselves.
To cut a long story short, they decided to use organic materials. The local fauna of Grobyc was harvested, muscles and bone re-shaped. Humanoid bodies, with a body/processor interface and sparse metallic reinforcement throughout, were built/grown/frankensteined. Larger beasts were turned into vehicles; graft some jet engines onto an avian beast, replace the brain with a computer, and presto, you got yourself an aerial transport. With a shell strong enough, you can even get into space. Finally, the local megafauna were turned into Titans- mechanical control and weaponry, primarily organic structure and locomotion.
In time, the Grobyci were able to build a thriving civilisation in this manner. Although they were eventually able to harvest metals from off-world, they had by then grown accustomed to their organic shells, and saw no need to change their way of doing things.

Grobyci Titans (and everything else, for that matter) look like somebody tried to build a robot (or other mechanical construct) out of organic parts. Which is what happened, so that makes sense. From a distance, they appear to be made entirely of organic material. Up close, there is no mistaking the mechanical elements. Eyes replaced with camera apertures; sections of flesh missing, exposing bone in a way no living thing could endure; mechanical weapons clearly grafted on; and- should the Titan suffer damage-, ubiquitous wiring beneath the flesh. Armour comes in the form of shell, scales, or just more flesh. If one were to study the genetics of the Titan, one would discover that different components come from different sources; muscles from one animal, bone from another, scales from a third, etc. The Titans are actually piloted by Grobyci bodies, who sit in a compartment in the skull, where they plug themselves in to the control interface. The Grobyci cannot simply remove their brain unit from their body, as many functions- not least of which is electrical power- are handled by organic components.

First draft of this concept. It might actually be fairly similar to Unraveller's concept? I can't tell.
