Embark screen .. no Goblins
« on: July 24, 2020, 06:58:42 am »

I was just about to embark when I tabbed through and saw there were no Goblins. How does this effect a playthrough? I always assumed part of the fun was to defend aginst goblins?

It definitely can affect the experience:
- Note that goblins being listed doesn't guarantee they'll attack. They may spend their effort on closer targets or be too weak to be able to attack. If you want to almost guarantee them attacking you you should embark closer to their dark fortress than any other settlement as well as checking via Legends Mode that they actually are numerous enough to send sieges against you. They can still be conquered by others during your fortress' life time, though.
- If you want some peace and quiet to concentrate on learning how the game works and/or a mega project sieges may be little more than annoying interruptions (assuming you've got sufficient defenses to keep them out and possibly just turtle down until they leave, or you've got reliable means of dealing with sieges).

When you have created a world but not accepted it yet, you can hit 'p' to export the world data. This creates a "world_sites_and_pops.txt" file in your DF folder and has data about the current population counts of the world and of the forts and towns. It takes a minute and gives you information to refer to later.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

The fun is to be given a whole world and be able to interact with it any way you choose to. Including embarking as far away from goblins as you choose to (you can raid them to let them know you're a valid target later if you're missing them).

If you really wanted to, you could download an old (2012 and earlier) version of the game where the world was irrelevant and it would magic up ever increasing hordes of goblins for you to deal with. But, then, there are an awful lot of other Tower Defence games out there with less bugs than DF2012.
