I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Did it (or a similar thing not made of plastic) exist before 1950?

Did it exist before AD 1000?
No.
*visible confusion*

Has it always been made of plastic?

Is the similar thing not made out of plastic called the same word as your secret object?
Yes, but no. The material is part of the name as laid out in the spoiler.
So, similar things not made of plastic existed before AD 1000, but the thing I said specifically didn't. I'm sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

Has it always been made of plastic?
It should probably be obvious that the answer is no. While things we could arguably call plastics existed in ancient times (such as resins), I wouldn't normally have counted them.
