Application of HFS Floor Bars [SPOILERS]
« on: June 17, 2020, 06:48:33 pm »

So, in my current fort, I live on a vault. This comes with the obvious benefit of divine metal, but also something I didn't realize until I looked around the structure itself: slade. The vault is made of it, which I'm sure many of you know, though of course slade stones aren't that much more useful than their regular counterparts. However, it's not that slade I'm curious about. No, I'm curious about slade bars. My vault (and perhaps all vaults) have four vertical bars within them, made from slade. I've successfully infiltrated and stolen one of these bars, and it's honestly pretty majestic. Unlike any other type of metal bar, it cannot be used to forge anything (though I can designate it to be melted), but unlike misc bars like soap, it can be used as a metal bar in creation of artifacts, to glorious effect.

This is what I used the bar I've been able to obtain on:

Glorious, but there's only four bars in the vault, and I can't make bars from the boulders, of course! Which leaves me with my question: Can I make more slade bars? Bars only melt for 0.5 bars in return, but I feel like there's some way to abuse the melt glitch to get more of this wondrous material. Artifact slade armor would be truly glorious thanks to the importance of density in guarding against blunt damage, and I'd love to be able to make more than four slade warhammers, which is my current plan for the stuff. It's the perfect artifact material. But I can't think of any way to do so outside of just regularly cheating them in with DFhack or editing the raws. So, melt glitch or otherwise, how might I get more bars of a material that I can't use, if that's even possible? I'm willing to cheat in most any way other than DFhack or raws-engineering.

Anything, even if it's somewhat far-fetched, is appreciated. I can't say I'm expecting to find a way to do this, but who knows?

Not if you can't forge stuff out of them.

If its in list, negotiate some bars via the Depot and trader caravan system.  Slow, but legit.

Pretty sure it won't be, for the reasons slade rock isn't. Also, it would require world gen forts to be built on Vaults, not player forts.

I don't know what's up with elven HFS instruments, though.

I guess it might be possible to add a reaction to the smelter to dupe slade bars (and not forget to add it as a permitted reaction to the entity default).

example, add to reaction_smelter:
REACTION:MOAR_SLADE]
[NAME:dupe slade]
[BUILDING:SMELTER:NONE]
[REAGENT:A:150:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:SLADE]
[PRODUCT:100:2:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:SLADE][PRODUCT_DIMENSION:150]
[FUEL][SKILL:SMELT]

The ' METAL'  is a guess, it could be that instead of that you'd need
[REAGENT:A:150:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:SLADE]
[PRODUCT:100:2:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:STONE:SLADE][PRODUCT_DIMENSION:150]

and in the entity_default, under the mountain header add [PERMITTED_REACTION:MOAR_SLADE]

Not sure if that works on save raws though, or that you would need to do that before starting a fort.

Making a new reaction for slade wouldn't work, but I could hijack an old one that never gets used and turn it into slade creation, which would. Still, I can't say I'm willing to make raw mods for free stuff, abusing glitches is normally where I draw the line.

And that's a pretty interesting idea, knutor. It won't do anything for me, but should I retire/abandon the fort and make another (which I don't plan on doing), I wonder if I would be able to import vault materials. Also my embark is pretty cruel and I haven't been able to get a single caravan inside due to necro sieges preventing them from showing and just the regular incidence of them being murdered, but I suppose that's ultimately a superficial and mostly irrelevant issue to the actual question.

In that case you may be better off using whips. They are probably more effective than an artifact slade warhammer..

Have you tried designating slade crafts from the manager screen? Sometimes that lets you make stuff you couldn't otherwise (like studding with bismuth).

Also re: whips. They're difficult to get, since you need to find a dwarf with a preference for whips, as they're not in the normal list of random artifact weapons. I've an artifact platinum whip in one of my forts and found it kinda disappointing, actually; gets through all armor but doesn't really do all that much damage.

Up for a long-term plan involving melting artifacts and lots of save-scumming?

I always play with https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Melt_item open in a tab for reference. Seems to me from that page that your best bets are leggings and several of the trap weapons.

So! Dwarf gets an armor smith mood (recommend training everyone without a moodable major skill - so peasants etc - with a small amount of armor smithing so you get more of these moods instead of stone crafts). As long as the dwarf doesn’t have a preference for a type of armor that will screw you (aka cap, helm, buckler, etc), let him pick up your slade bar. Once he has started crafting the artifact, save the game. Load game - dwarf completes artifact. If not leggings, X out w/o saving, reload, try again. Keep Xing out and reloading until dwarf makes slade leggings.

Melt leggings. Get back 1 bar + smelter holds 0.5 bars for now.

Next artifact, same deal. Melt 2nd leggings, get back 2 bars.

Now you’ve turned 2 bars into 3! A process so slow and painful you’ll maybe rethink your stance on duping in that reaction...

That's a nice idea, but does the game even allow you to designate an artifact for melting, let alone permit it to be added to a Melt Item job?

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.

What color is a slade wpn?  Is molar mass of Slade>Gold? Having a hard time seeing it better than Rose Gold for bashing stuff in. Pink is just so nice to look at. I tinker with slade tonight. Slades prolly a great spiked ball material. So is lead. Lead balls. ha. not saying more.

Whips are nice, for headshots, finalblows, but have you ever faught with a very high molar mass shield+high wrestling? Stunlock?

Only got divine stuff, once in my fortress, on an elf instrument thru depot. Night or shadow cloth it was, so molar mass was not worth looking up. I keep on inspecting trade goods for it, but failing to find it.

Ive now got a temple to just about every diety, and some subgod groups are built up, but no priests. Best one in Fort is this lake pond fish god, by number of visitors to it. Hoping it grants something divine, someday.

Wiki didn’t say they couldn’t be. I cannot say I personally have tried. If they can’t be melted, let me know and I’ll add it to the wiki - then the question would be, can one modify raws so artifacts can be melted, and is that too much game-editing for OP as well?

I can't speak for the current version, but I know that artifacts definitely couldn't be designated for melting or dumping in versions prior to 0.34.01, and it seems unlikely that Toady would have removed that restriction.

Slade is black. Not sure what the molar mass of slade is, but it has more than 10 times the density of gold:

Material      | Density (g/cm^3) | Molar Mass
Divine Metals |   1.00           |  20,000
Gold          |  19.32           | 196,967
Platinum      |  21.40           | 195,084
Slade         | 200.00           |     ???

Re: Getting more slade bars.

If this bug still exists, you can create new z levels comprised of the material a floor is built of (such as your slade bars). I'm not sure if the new slade tiles will be meltable or regular slade, however.
