It's the former, i.e. the military equipment lists. If you don't see anything there you may suffer from some other bug (I gave up on a fortress because it just crashed too often, but in a random pattern. Playing 10 days per crash was a bit too much, though).

Toady is probably the only one who can give a reasonably accurate answer to the question of whether the bug will follow you. My guess, however, is that it's tied to the fortress' data structures, and, furthermore, that it's tied to the local government rather than the site. If that guess is correct, replacing the government with a abandon/reclaim would work, while retire/resume would depend on whether the corrupted structures are rebuild or reused. On the other hand, I wouldn't trust migrants from that site aren't spreading corruption, as it seems to me that late arrival performance troupe members can generate it. I'd probably try to ask in the thread for the current release (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=175790.0) and see if Toady thinks it's a good idea to answer (as doing so risks setting off an avalanche of questions). I think the issue is sufficiently serious to merit an answer, though (although it might be that he doesn't know).

I suppose someone with that equipment bug, has tried dfHack, cleanowned, just prior to a squad uniform change?

Maybe remove the soldier's ability to read, to prevent books from traveling outside and then back inside a civilization, this seems befuddle and throw villain code off. Ive an artifact just laying there on embark edge, but they want ones in my treasury.

These soldiers drop their books in the worst locations, when their squad is given an order.

You guys talking about this game crashing bug, has me contemplating raiding with 1 dorf in throw away gear, with 9 tame war grizzly bears.

Books being added to equipment likely has little to do with actual books traveling, as the artifacts that end up in the corrupted lists typically are ones created very early in history and that never have been in the fortress. Also, I believe Toady has confirmed that it's a matter of corruption, i.e. memory that doesn't hold equipment being read as if it was.

Dorfs raiding drop their stolen stuff at the map edge when they turn back to civilian just after entry (regardless of them being on active duty). Also, it's not uncommon for visitors to realize they've past their time of death as they enter the embark and fall down dead at the map edge, dropping all their gear. I typically detect this when I suddenly see my dorfs haul an unexpected corpse and then scour the map edges for a pile of junk. In addition to being forbidden when dropped (using standard options), books (always?) are marked as trader and won't be moved unless you use DFHack to clear that flag. I don't remember if that also happens to raided books.

So if I do missions without stealing artifacts, then I'll have less corruption?

No.

The most promising way I've found to avoid corruption is to make absolutely sure no dwarf is hauling something when given the order to raid. For whatever reason they don't drop their hauled item and can take it off the map. One time I explicitly saw a dwarf leave with a maple wood log, and when they came back, "maple wood log" was in the armor section of the equipment list.

Ordering a station first works, since they drop held items as soon as they reach the station point. Using this my corruption rate from raids went from ~40% to ~2%. I still get corruption occasionally, though that might just be me not noticing a hauled item, or something else might be causing it too.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I've been doing that, too. Maybe that's why it took me so long to get corrupted. Now I'm wondering if not bringing back artifacts would lower it even further.

Thank you OP and responders. I learned something important to peaceful gameplay in this post. Its been bothering me, well considerably infact, that this human croaked(no offense to Toady) on my map edge of /deathcause = old age. I never interacted with him, that I can tell. As if stress from other things is bad enough, migrants are coming, just to cause dead body stress. So glad its set to 0.0.0, that right there, old age perishing migrants, would have borked things up with my haulers.
