Sunless Corpse Dwarf Civilian?
« on: June 02, 2020, 11:30:05 am »

I've played this game for a long time but I also haven't played in a long time. I'm very confused about exactly what a sunless corpse is or why he's a civilian in my fortress.

You can see he's displayed with the undead symbol

He came in the first migrant wave and is listed as "dwarf ranger sunless corpse"

Is this just a regular dwarf with a weird name?

He's an intelligent undead; a rarity for a migrant! They're occasionally raised by necromancers instead of a regular zombie and have a will of their own.

Consider yourself lucky; they're immortal, immune to pain/etc, and will never be stressed. He'll make an excellent military dwarf, based on his listed attributes.

For, in order that men should resist injustice, something more is necessary than that they should think injustice unpleasant. They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Necromancers and some demons can create intelligent undead lieutenants with procedurally generated titles. They can also have a number of different magic powers. It looks like yours somehow became a member of your civilization and ended up migrating to your fortress.

I'd look up the groups mentioned on his description page in legends. "Citizen of the sweltering mine", "member of the fated crypts" "former member / former lord of the band of lutes", "former prisoner of the cloaks of wickedness / the consideration of brushes"
It sounds to me like he was formerly the ruler of something called the band of lutes, was captured by the cloaks of wickedness and the consideration of brushes (one being a civilization and the other being a cite government under that civilization) and then escaped and joined your dwarf civ.

It says he was born in 219, so the current year would be ~957.

Thanks so much for the info guys I had no idea that was a thing now. It also made sense since I was actually reclaiming that fortress from a demon necromancer. I made him the Baron since I felt bad that he lost his old title. I'm enjoying my immortal zombie ruler/corpse hauler.

It does seem useful how he apparently doesn't care about seeing corpses, huh? :P
