Did your pump work? I can't tell but I don't think you have a ramp on the inlet which is needed to draw water into the pump.
Pumps don't need ramps to draw fluid. Both a ramp and a floor works (and I believe open space works as well for pump stacks build in a specific order). However, trees won't grow on ramps, and thus a ramp would be a guarantee against tree growth blockage.

Ah right.  I always have a ramp with a grate instead of a empty square and grate so that anything that accidentally falls into my water reactors gets to be recovered due to the current and the waterless space, so I have a habit of having ramps at the intake.   Not something that should be needed for a drowning chamber.

You may want to find a way to divert the river through your trap so things have to go through there. Otherwise you need to hope things try to path that way. Floodgate/raising bridges with wall grates on one end to allow water to pass ( and a way to disable those too ).

I have no idea how to divert rivers unless it's frozen though.

So I actually had to regenerate my world (had the seed saved) due to a bug with migrants. Everything should be fine now, and I basically just plopped myself into the same spot as before. I've already restarted my shark trap, and this time since I regenerated it there are actual sharks to trap (among other things).

My hope is that they'll just swim into it. No chance of the river freezing, since it's a tropical swamp/marsh. So no diverting the river at any point in time. I know that my pump design, as well as my trap design, work in principal without too much problems (I.E no water spilling out to the sides). So I can get it back to standard.

The shark trap won't really play into my current plans right now though. I'm only getting it up and running for when my fortress has the chance to start using it next season. Shark slaughter kinda takes a backseat to getting myself some swamp animals.

It's possible to divert rivers that are not freezing, using screw pumps and/or obsidianization.

does the stream freeze in the winter?
If so you could just wait until it freezes, mine out the ice and build an "air lock" with gate/bridge/etc without fear of any drowning dwarves

Wait ? Your fort is not half green half red regardless of the stone it's built in ? I'm learning something new every day.

Alright then, I haven't replied to this in a few days. The good news is that the trap worked, and I was able to get a bullshark. You can see that I had my butcherdwarf handle that, and the body parts are being brought to the stockpiles. The pump was, unfortunately, destroyed beforehand by accident.

However, I believe I may have a small problem, in that I might not get any more bullsharks or other aquatic animals in my river due to this water fall.

The river actually flows west from the east, rather than from the ocean it's connected to.

So now I'm just wondering if this will prevent things from spawning in. I want my dwarves to have more sharks to eat after all.

I believe rivers are broken in that there's no migration of animals to them (as opposed to vermin spawning).

It might be possible to contain animals to let them breed to get a stock, but I don't know if anyone has tried that with river animals.

I'll have to figure out the spawnunit command from dfhack then, because that was probably the last bullshark there.

I've definitely seen river animals give birth, but have not been able to contain them to experiment yet.
