It is the end of an era. Arya, The Hero King, liberator of mankind and slayer of Ryuushin, the last dragon king, has passed away. Now his son, only a year into his rule of the Kingdom of Fonzia, faces open rebellion from all corners of the country. As their eastern neighbor of Dubria comes to grips with their new territory, the possibility that a civil war could result in invasion looms...

Time for another game. As some of you know, I have been working on a new setting for quite some time in preparation for a game codenamed Lucky Emblem. This is not that game. But, I've been sitting on the lore long enough that it's starting to bum me out, so I've decided to run a very strictly scripted prequel game. The end point is already planned out, and the game is going to be more linear than usual, but if that doesn't bother you I'd love to run a quick game for you. For a given value of quick.

This game will be using several ruleset alterations, which I will detail in the spoiler below. But one I will be discussing here is pretty simple: I will be abandoning the traditional experience system in favor of a milestone system. Because of that, and because I have the whole game planned out in terms of objectives, narrative, and broad-strokes map design, I can tell you that there will be a maximum of 22 levels acquired over the game. There will be 8 chapters in total, and I'm aiming to keep things to a relatively quick pace, at a turn per week or better. Please keep this in mind when deciding if you want to apply or not.

Shove: Unmounted units will gain access to a new option for their action during their turn, the Shove command. Units can shove an allied unit (not enemies) 1 space directly away into an unoccupied space that is not impassable, provided their CON is equal to or greater than the target's AID. For this game, enemies will not use the Shove command.
Smite: A new character skill, Smite, is available. Units with Smite can use the Shove command regardless of the difference in their CON and the target's AID. They also gain access to the Smite command. Units with Smite can smite an allied unit (not enemies) 2 space directly away into an unoccupied space that is not impassable, provided their CON is equal to or greater than the target's AID, and the intervening space is both unoccupied and not impassable.
Leadership: A new stat, Leadership (LED) is introduced. Most units will have a Leadership stat of 0. Leadership provides a bonus +3 Hit/Avoid to all units in the same army, but not to allied armies (for example, a player army with 5 total leadership will gain 15 Hit/Avoid, though green units working with them will not gain the benefit of their leadership). Leadership does not have growth rates and is awarded by story progression only. For the sake of convenience, battle calculations will display the difference in leadership for whichever side has the greater sum. Downed units do not grant their leadership bonuses. Base Leadership is 0 and bonus points cannot be spent on Leadership.
Class promotion items will not be present as a mechanic. Players may choose to promote or not at their discretion once they reach level 10 during any intermission period between maps. Mid-map promotions will not be available.

Also, in turn progression for a unit, trade comes after movement, so you can't trade and then move.

Information may be edited or added in the leadup to the game (or during it), though obviously I will attempt to avoid outright contradictions. If you have any questions, please direct them to me, as the resource in question is still incomplete.

So, who are the players? Knights and men-at-arms in service to the royal family of Fonzia. Due to political tensions, backgrounds for submissions may not include Kiulmaa or Dubria. Only Fonzian citizens (or those who fled the former Faheem territory) will be permitted. I will be picking 8 applicants total, and I will be making my selection on Wednesday, the 27th of May, at Noon, EST, and the game will begin more or less immediately afterward. Please use this template to submit your sheet. Characters will begin at First Class, at level 3. Trainee classes will not be used.

Bio: Born during the dragon's rule in Vialdara, she was inspired by Arya's ideals and helped him on his quest. While not a true member of their party, she heard many secrets and was part of the revolution behind the scenes, eventually becoming part of a burgeoning spy network working behind the scenes for the Holy King, and taking the name Berseria. During her life, she gathered much information and worked in a network of bards, dancers, and other performers who helped keep the peace, by whispered word, dropped hint, or or rarely dagger in the dark. As well as performing her own duties, she ensured the safety of the new royal family.

Of course, that wasn't quite enough with the Hero King's own friends often serving as a source of pain for him.

However, issues seem to be arising, not only from Jung Arya's compromising ruling style, but also from other sources. Those who demand things they have no real right to demand, or real idea of what it was like in the past. Berseria is old for this business, not quite able to perform her duties personally due to more time needing to be spent on maintaining her look. Ahe had planned on retiring from the cloth and dagger business, moving to the simpler times of just dealing with bandits, traveling, and peaceful pursuits, maybe even settling down somewhere. Instead, rebellion is showing it's head once more, and she'll need to stick closer to the new king and weather one more storm for King and Country.

Fascinated by what might have been during the ages before Humans, Edgar Paerlum was eager to learn of all the legends spoken by the people from a young age. Such was his passion for the past that, in a time where historical records have been destroyed by Ryuushin and there were greater worries under a dragon's rule, Edgar managed to attain literacy and began making his first attempts at recording the myths that has been mostly upkept by oral tradition at this point. Obviously, those first attempts were crude and amateurish, for he was still a child at that time that needed to participate in work on the farm of his family.
When word was spreading of a man named Arya raising an army to free humanity, the 15-years old teenager got imbued by the fire of rebellion too and hastily said goodbye to his parents as he went on an ambition-fueled journey to follow Arya's army as closely as possible (which, in all honesty, wasn't really close) while talking to all kinds of people he came across to take notes. His dream: The creation of a Chronicles of Arya, a document for future generations that, even if Arya would fail in his quest, would inspire new ursurpers to lead the charge against the Dragon King Ryuushin.

To his pleasant surprise, Ryuushin fell a few years later, and the Age of Humans has begun. At first, Edgar was overjoyed, of course. He did as most people did at the time, hurrying to the next tavern as the word spread of this monumental victory and having a drunken celebration as legendary as Arya's accomplishment itself. But the very next morning, as he was fighting a painful hangover, he realized that this transition into a new age would also mean new challenges for humanity as a whole. Now, in a world where power was no longer absolute, he realized that what formerly binds villages together will now bind whole realms together, and people will most likely follow the example of the territories of Dulobun and Faheem across the whole continent. After recovering from his hangover, Edgar made a bold plan:

He will create a storehouse of written knowledge at the heart of wherever Arya will settle, for he is sure he would become the ruler of his own territory.

Continuing his journey, following the distant echoes of where Arya was, he eventually reached Fonal after a few weeks, seeing the future capital of a yet-young Fonzia when it was little more than huts and wooden walls surrounding the ruins of the Dragon King's castle. Over the next decade, Edgar bore witness of the capital's rapid growth and wrote down everything he would hear from both locals and travellers. Keeping himself afloat by doing several oddjobs, he was keeping for himself in his own hut, spending most of his avaible money in parchments, writing tools and candles. His works became more and more professional and the living space in his hut became smaller and smaller. Such was his focus and passion on recording everything that he occasionally quaffed Sniper's Friend just to be able to write in fine letters (as well as a few instances of consuming Red Eye on his more depressed nights of writing, a fact he is not proud about).

Shortly after the First Dubrian War, Edgar hit a low point in his career and grew frustrated at his lack of recognition as a recorder of history. Spewing profanity, he threw a few of his records out of the window. To his shock, said records landed directly at the feet of a member of one of the minor noble families of Fonal. Expecting harsh punishment, he immediately went out of his hut to apologize and prostrate. But the noblewoman instead picked up the records, flipping through them before asking Edgar why he would allow such gracefully-written text to become destroyed and lost. At her request, he presented her more of his works. With that, only a few days later, Edgar was moving into a more spacious room within the servant's house belonging to the noble family, now tasked with recording everything about the family while making copies of a part of what he had already written, like his records of the Kraemian War of Secession or a collection of myths and legends from the Age of Dragons.

More time passed, with Edgar being allowed to visit his birthplace after such a long time, where he was seeing his mother again after more than a decade. His father, sadly, has passed away in that time, so he could only say his goodbyes at his grave. He convinced his mother to travel with him back to Fonal, where it was agreed that she could do minor housework and help in the kitchen to stay in the servant's house. After only a few years, during the middle of the Second Dubrian War, Edgar's mother passed away, her remains being returned to the homeplace so she could be buried next to her husband.
It was also around that time that the copies of his works became more widespread and known to more people, including reaching King Arya. Impressed by the quality of the scriptures, Edgar got invited into the throne room, where he was offered to become the Royal Librarian. He accepted on the spot.

More years passed, and now a nobleman himself, Edgar had all the time in the world studying books from faraway lands while continuing to produce works of written art, even organizing occasional gatherings to teach children in and around Fonal basic literacy without demanding tuition costs. Of course, that didn't exclude him getting paid for giving in-depth personal teachings to the offsprings of noble families. It was also that time period where he picked up a new interest, that of learning to wield Anima magic. Life was finally good for the scribe in his 40ies.

After the death of King Arya and Jung Arya climbing the throne, he pledged allegiance to him and also declared that he would support him wherever he can, even if it means risking his life at the front. He felt like he owed the Hero King a life debt for enabling his dreams, and that debt got transferred to the second king in his eyes. He already had a young but promising young man as an apprentice that was capable of managing the library whenever he was away on his educational missions. That young man was ready to inherit the role of Royal Librarian in case something would happen to him.
It is rather unusual for a librarian to join combat, but he had faith in his ability to cast fire-based magic for the good of the kingdom. He desired to fulfill his life debt that Jung Arya inherited from his father, and he managed to convince the second king to join his campaign based on these factors, with having memorized decades of history being an additional perk, for knowledge is quintessential to have in his eyes. Plus, writing a first-hand battle report is something he had yet to do...

Bio:

Born just two years after Arya slew Ryuushin and saved humanity, the only world Valter Eystein knew was one in which the Hero-King was celebrated and revered all across the continent. Both his mother Cassandra and uncle William were members of the king's royal guard, which afforded Valter many opportunities to see the legendary man (up close!) and get to know him in a way that others simply could not... even if it was not exactly a personal relationship.

Valter's (relatively) close contact with Arya and his mother's constant tales of the Hero-King's bravery and leadership during the Last Dragon War fostered a great sense of loyalty and respect within him. He wanted to do his part to protect the king and his family - it seemed only fair, as he had saved all of humanity before - and, with some help from his own family, dedicated his childhood to learning military arts to do just that.

Though he was too young to know it at the time, tensions were brewing among the band of heroes that Valter thought so highly of due to the Hero-King's recent tax increase (though it's quite possible he would have thought such taxes were critically necessary, had he known about them, or what taxes were at all), and would soon result in two major blows against the Eystein family: news of the Traitor's Scroll from Kraem, and the realization that his uncle, who had been in Kraem's service for the past year, remained loyal to the newly born traitor instead of returning to serve the king.

They were utterly devastated, Valter most of all; how could anyone turn their back on the savior of humanity? How could his uncle, once a loyal servant of the Hero-King, follow such a despicable man in his treachery? Cassandra remained steadfastly loyal as ever, but the damage was done. Insidious whisperings in back rooms and between palace guardsmen said it was only a matter of time before the rest of them went off to join the traitor as well. The Hero-King was far wiser than to take them for truth, but among the rest of those in his service and the nobility, the Eysteins were all as bad as William.

Valter refused to be deterred by the slandering of his family's name. He would prove to everyone who'd cast judgement on them for his uncle's actions that his family were truly worthy of the respect they gained during the Last Dragon War. For the rest of his childhood and all of his adult life he trained, always putting in his full effort and beyond to improve himself. Though his family's station could have easily earned him the position he prized so highly with a good word here or an owed favor there, Valter refused to exercise such privilege; he wanted to achieve them on his own merits, and worked tirelessly to do so. First, he became soldier in Fonal. Years later, a palace guardsman. And just recently he caught the Hero-King's eye, and succeeded his family members as member of the royal guard.

The Eystein family's name has been tarnished, but Valter will restore it, no matter what.



Valter is a loyal and protective man. He takes his duties as a royal guardsman with the utmost seriousness and care, devoting his full attention and effort to any task given to him, no matter how grand or how small. He is amicable to all his fellows regardless of station, but treats the King and his family with a special kind of reverence. He does not tolerate disrespect where it has not been earned, regardless of who it's aimed at or why (and when it targets his family, he is liable to explode at the person responsible in quite an unflattering manner). Valter would willingly and unhesitatingly give up his life to protect his fellow guardsmen and of course his King, but not only because it is his duty - because it is also his desire to protect them. His dream, even.

Bio:

 Sara Ottesen was born in the then-new city of Fonal a few years after the end of the Last Dragon War. Her parents, both minor nobles and  officers in the Hero King's army, joined the government there and settled down in the city. Sara was an only child, and enjoyed the undivided attention of her parents throughout her childhood. A staple of her childhood were the stories that her parents told of their time in the Hero King's army as he waged war to free the continent, and Sara's imagination was captured.

 Sara's parents saw her enthusiasm for their tales and encouraged her to follow in their footsteps. Almost as soon as she was old enough to hold a practice sword, Sara began her training. Practicing alone or sparring with the skilled tutors that her parents hired, she found that she had an aptitude for the blade. Encouraged, she doubled down and even began spending large amounts of her free time in the practice chambers, setting her eyes on no less a target than the royal guard.

 When she came of age, she joined the military, easily settling in to the martial life as she looked to her next goal. A few years after that her swordsmanship (and some connections of her parents) won her a spot in the royal guard, only a few months before the Hero King abdicated the throne.

 Sara was raised with relative privilege and received a noble's education. This has left her with a well-developed sense of justice, but combined with her relatively sheltered upbringing has left her with a certain naivety and rather inflexible opinions. Like her fellows, she is greatly loyal to the royal family. She is greatly self-confident, though not quite to the point of arrogance, but does not always realize the social advantages she has as a noble.

Bio: Ferry (who strongly dislikes being called by her given name) is the youngest of five children, daughter of a headsman and a fishwife. Of her three surviving siblings, she gets along only with the younger of her two older sisters. She has a quick eye and a keen instinct; what she lacks in strength or nimbleness compared to others she compensates in cleverness. As a child, she displayed unusual precocity, balancing her work assisting her mother in the Valciso fish market with intense study of magic.

At ten years old, she reached the limits of her understanding alone and began looking for tutelage. At eleven, after no small amount of pleading, she was taken under the wing of a sage versed in dark magic. At fifteen she became a bodyguard for a lord's daughter. At seventeen she managed to catch the attention of the royal guard. Although not high-ranking, her position in service to the royal family has not come without controversy due to her age, common birth, and occasional selective lack of social graces.

In combat, Ferry is technical and precise, her strikes often intended to present as few angles of herself to retaliation as possible. She prefers to fight with short blades and high-powered magic at close range, moving in only after assessing the risks. Her staying power in a prolonged melee is poor; her metal armor plates are worn, when they are worn at all, only as a reflection of the status of the royal family, designed in a way to avoid impeding her movement instead of providing effective protection.

Ferry is strongly driven, curious and eager to learn no matter the subject. But she can also be standoffish, inflexible, and selfish. She finds it hard to relax in silent environments, preferring to fade into the chatter of crowds.

Bio: Alwine is a veteran of the Hero King Arya's first army, long and proud in her service. Though her origins were quite humble, hailing from a modest farming village, she served valiantly with axe and shield in the quest to slay the great beast himself. She has a reputation as a bit of a glory hound, and will gladly regale anyone willing to listen with. . . "enhanced" tales of both her own deeds in combat and those of the Hero-King, not to mention the erstwhile companions she has fought alongside through the years.

Her loyalty did not flag even when the nation he had worked to build fragmented. She led her own contingent of troops into battle during the bitter and bloody war even when it came to facing soldiers she had once considered her compatriots. In the dwindling days of the war, she led a desperate charge into Kraem's forces in an attempt to break the lines and gain a foothold that she believed could turn the tide. This nearly proved to be her undoing; she quickly found herself deeper into enemy forces than expected, and the fierce resistance rebuffed her. The results of the battle would put her out of service for years; she was one of the last to flee the battlefield, and suffered grievous wounds for her trouble, including the loss of her left eye.

Never one to lie down and bemoan her fate, she sought a new talent to make herself useful despite her injuries. Alwine spent years studying and frustrating monks and scholars alike in a quest to master healing magic, though her progress was slow at times - she never left the king's army and continued to contribute where she could, which sometimes meant leaving the books and staves behind. Though age, injury, and years spent off the battlefield may have slowed her, they have not stopped her, and she is ready to set forth to defend her king once again.

Backstory:

Fonzian by blood and birth, Belros feels more at home in the southern seas of the land. His parents were lost to him at a young age due to both of them acquiring the Weeping Cough. Whether you consider it lucky or not, Belros was spared being infected by the disease and was forced out of his home. Now a street rat, he wandered the peers foraging for edible scraps.

However, it would not be long before he’d find a new family. Randel, one of the captains of the Dogbeards, found the shriveling boy in a dank alley one day. Taking pity on the lad he offered him a place on his crew. Well, he’d mainly be swabbing the decks for the first couple years since sending an early teen into battle would surely prove an early end for the boy. Later on in his time with the crew, they decided the boy was ready to become a little bit more useful.

The first mate, Leona, was in charge of teaching him some more… unique talents. Picking locked chests they plundered, how to handle a bow to provide cover fire while on the ship and even how to handle a blade should an assailant come close. Strangely enough, he and the first mate had more in common than he realized. Apparently she was also picked up from the street four to five years before he was and at around the same age too. Their student-mentor relationship evolved into one of more mutual respect. Given more time, maybe something even deeper, however shadows loom within the other members of this ship’s crew.

Rico, a less than savory crew member had been clawing his way up the tree of the Dogbeards was planning his next big leap. His methods were the opposite of honorable, often using others as stepping stones on his long bloody path to the top. What did he want to gain by going up the pecking order? Money? Fame? Power? His goals were kept secret. Leona caught wind of what he was planning to do but with little time remaining to prevent him from doing his plot. He wanted to murder Belros in cold blood then frame the captain for it, he even foraged evidence to use to help his case. Late one night at the docks, like in years past, Belros was in charge of cleaning the deck. Not expecting an assault from his own crew mates he was caught by surprise. Cornered and starring death in the eyes, suddenly he was pushed out of the way of an incoming attack by Leona. “Belros run!” She yelled bleeding heavily on the deck of the ship Stunned by the sudden events he couldn’t move before seeing the fatal blow dealt onto the first mate of the ship dealt by the traitor Rico. “Dumb bitch, she should’ve just left your squirming ass for dead. Oh well, killing two people tonight will have much more of an impact.” A sinister smile grew on his face and almost by instinct the man booked it off the ship. “You idiots! I didn’t pay you to watch! Kill him! Don’t let him get away!” Suddenly even more crew tried to cut him off. However, Belros was slipperier than they gave him credit for and he was able to out run his assailants and escape out of the city.

He tried to head back in the morning to try and plead innocents but Rico was one step ahead. He had already informed the captain he Belros was the one who committed the murder and now the entire crew was out looking for his head. Forced to leave his second family behind he needed to go somewhere safe. Somewhere where he could hide himself while he figures out how to save the only family he has left and to get back at Rico. Now the hard part is trying to find that place. He couldn’t stay in one place for any long period of time, lest he catch the ire of those trying to catch him. He wandered for a few months and while he would love to go back to his easy days of pickpocketing on the streets to help fund his new nomad life, the new sense of honor that Randel instilled in the lad wouldn’t allow him to steal from good people. Instead he took whatever side jobs he could do in a day to earn enough gold to keep moving forward. It wouldn’t be until his wandering led him to Fonal where things would start turning up again.

As Belros made his way through the markets looking for any odd jobs he could muster he noticed a commotion coming from down the streets. Some alley kids had just run off with fistfuls of jewelry from one of the stalls. The guards were chasing after them of course, but it was obvious this wasn’t these kid’s first time pulling a stunt like this and they were quite famous for it. The kids would lose them before too long. Feeling a bit of a sympathetic connection to these kids and wanting to steer them at least down a brighter path he tracked them down and shadowed them until they got to whatever base they had. When he was about to make his appearance, a third party showed their faces. It was two armed thugs who the kids then gave all the things they stole to. “What? This isn’t nearly as much as last time. Are yu’s brats holding out on us or somethin’? You know what happens when you disappoint the Alley Vipers,” He kicked one of the children in the gut knocking him back and sending the rest into great fear. “Unless yu’s runts want to be found lyin’ in your own pool of blood I suggest yu’s all best get to more merchandise grabin’.” Yea no, there’s no way Belros would allow this to continue. Without waiting a second longer he got between the kids and the thugs. Things got heated pretty quickly, it all ended with the two thugs knocked unconscious, Belros with a few nicks and the kids hiding out in the corner. However, the commotion had alerted the guards which everyone at the scene was detained and took in for questioning.

When it was Belros’ turn for questioning, it wasn’t surprising when the captain asked what a former and wanted member of the Dogbeards was doing in the capital. The outlaw had no reason to lie, he was just trying to get by on whatever work he could find while on the run. “And those jobs included saving a bunch of kids from a couple gang members in the city.” He chuckled, “Name one good reason why I shouldn’t send you back to the southern seas.” Belros was in a panic at this point, without thinking he told him he could find the headquarters of those thugs in the city. Surely the safety of the citizens was more valuable than getting a couple brownie points. This amused the man and he accepted the terms. It would only take a couple of days of hunting down leads before Belros had hard evidence of the hideout’s location and turned it into the captain. “Well boy, a deal is a deal. You’re free to go wander around like a lost lamb now… Unless you’re interested in guard duty that is.” Belros looked in shock at the man’s offer, “Hey don’t give me that, it just so happens that me and your old man were old drinking pals back in the day. When I heard he and his wife died I worried about their child but it seems you wandered off before I could get to ya. Now, I don’t know the whole story about your beef with the Dogbeards but there’s got to be more to it than what one sees at first glance. No betraying murderer goes out of their way to help a bunch of street kids now. Besides, with helping track those goons I have enough evidence to use as leverage to get you in with the guard. What do ya say then? Guard life may not be the most grand, but it's better than not having a home.” Belros gladly took his offer and at least the Dogbeards will think twice before attacking a soldier. Now, the only real question now is how long can he survive as one.
