[Adventure Mode] Better Corpses
« on: May 20, 2020, 03:55:24 pm »

Instead of a corpse object being created when someone dies, the NPC should have a "dead" state. The NPC should be viewable as if it was still alive and the effects of injuries should persist(guts spilled, bleed until there is no blood left). Butchering should work the same way. I'm not sure how picking up bodies will work, but looting can be done through wrestling with the corpse or just have the NPC drop everything.

The main reason why I want this feature is because knowing or theorizing how someone was killed could have saved my life several times.

Classifying corpses as creatures would require a major program overhaul. But corpses do retain data about their status (which is how they can keep the same injuries when reanimated) so being able to view it on the display screen seems reasonable.

I expect someone could write a DFHack script to do it, actually, if it hasn't been done already.

Isn't there a "deathcause" script? tells you how someone died, which presumably reads corpse info (I don't know how Hack magic works).

I think this is a good idea for many reasons, although as IndigoFenix says it'd be a major change. Not only would it be neat to see how people died (other than the generic "mangled/mutilated"), but:
   1) bodies not dropping everything on death would be nice - could save some cleanup work.
   2) I've often wanted to be able to cut off heads/fingers/ears etc. after killing a target, without butchering the entire creature and taking its skull, which seems excessive.
   3) In a similar vein, it'd be nice for beasts, monsters, elves (but I repeat myself) to eat corpses without first butchering them. A dragon's not going to carve you up neatly before it eats you.

I just want people to not inexplicably become naked when they die.
