Assign metal bolts and set them to be used for [C]ombat. Assign wooden bolts and set them to be used for [T]raining.

You'll probably want to set the quantity of each to 20*number_of_squad_members (i.e., 200 metal and 200 wooden for a squad of ten.) I guess you could use less for wooden.

Trick is in assigning x-bow squads only training ammo. Bone and wood bolts I use for that.
Before combat, you need to remove training ammo from squad and assign combat ammo. Metal bolts.
Also keep different quantum stockpiles for both types of ammo.

Else, if you even explicitly tell Dwarves to use metal bolts only for combat, they still will be shooting metal bolts at shooting range. It has something to do with their faulty equipment messages and fact of having some metal bolts still in their quivers, when visiting shooting range. If you do it my way, then usage of metal bolts at shooting range should drop drastically to almost 0. Still expect some confusion, if you switch ammo types for squads too often. Assigning x-bow squads to hunters can help in emptying their quivers often, as they drop all equipment, when going civilian. Just then, keep in mind to assign all pieces of military equipment on them manually to specific items, else there will be some issues in equipping military gear.

Training bolts were fixed. Set wood for training they shoot wood at the range and not metal. Metal for combat they shoot metal at goblins and not targets. Unless you've seen otherwise, in the latest version in which case you should request the bug report be reopened.

I am playing latest vanilla DF. Though, the save I am playing is very old. Unfortunately, I did see a metal bolt, which missed its target, dropped 1 level at my shooting range instead of training ammo. I had no idea, its bug report was closed, as I would take a note of it and make a bug report. I have like 150 saves from last month for this game and no clue which one to look up for it.

Maybe this bug is alike the depression among Dwarves lately. The fix applies certainly only to games started on latest DF versions? This save is so old, that I had to switch some reactions to get slurry, paper, quires and bookcases in, for the working library.

I made in suggestions a post about adding a loading mechanism, checking for save's game version and updating old saves to the latest version.
