Well, that's not disconcerting.

3: Consider our unusual perception of the flower. Is it a perception / sensation which we are familiar with? Otherwise, does it have any obvious explanation? If the answer to both of these questions is "no", then perhaps it is something we should be taking more seriously.
1: He's not getting rid of you that easily. What's up with that orchid?

I feel we can do both of these.
+1, this is def a spooky flower

((Of course I should've known that dangling a spoop flower in front of Bay12 will result in them becoming very curious))

Prologue - 8

If there was anything you learned as a journalist, it's that you never go away just because someone is subtly hinting you to. Something very strange is happening here, and your curiosity has to be sated. If it kills you, well, there's always the often omitted corollary to that cliche about cats and curiosity.

"What is with that orchid?" you ventured a direct question at the gardener.

"What are you talking about? What orchid?"

"The orchid in that pot over there. That we just moved."

The gardener looks to you, then to the orchid, and furrowed his brows. There's a mixture of surprise and nervousness in his face, which is making you feel the same.

As you examine the orchid, it was as if a silent voice in your head is telling you that this is an ordinary orchid, one which looks completely mundane, if albeit a little exotic given its locale. The thought wouldn't have been so alien if only you were able to actually tell what the orchid looks like.

"Ah, Ms. Ferguson imported this orchid from Indonesia, if I recall correctly. Of course, it's not one of those rare, fussy things, otherwise, it would've been impossible to grow it outside of the greenhouse."

  • "Wait, we have a greenhouse?"
  • That's obviously a bait, continue looking at the orchid.
  • Something else... (Write-in)

He clearly does not want to speak about it now, lets not alienate the staff on our first day.  We can always ask him later.

3 Ask him, So anywhere else in the gardens that I really should be careful about?

Prologue - 9

You continue to stare at the orchid, as if trying to will it to coalesce into a form that could be described.

It's not blue, for starter. And it's not soft. It's not made of orchid. It's very sharp.

You watch the blood drip from your cut palm. The orchid keens. The pot cracks again, so much for that.

You thrust the poker into the bulbous thing. It retreats back into the chimney. You run from the train that was not a train.

The gardener sighs.

You withdraw your hands from the tarry substance. The visitor takes off his opera mask and grins with more than two rows of teeth. You cut the fish open and spread out the map inside. You brake the car suddenly as soon as you hear the sickening crunch.

It is dark. You can't breathe. What is that sound?

"-All hearsay, of course. She's a devout Christian, and I would know, she prays at the chapel daily, so what if she doesn't go to church?" You suddenly find that you're walking along with a woman who seems to be in her forties. You're not sure where you going. You're still in the house, at least.

  • "Who are you again?"
  • "Where are we going?"
  • "Uh huh. Yeah." Nod along.
  • Look at your palm.
  • Try to figure out where in the house you are
  • Something else... (Write-in)
