Prologue - 3

You decide to walk around the house, trying to figure out just how many rooms it has. There are two floors, and an attic (locked, maybe to protect from burglars?) Most of the rooms in the upper floor seem to have been converted into storage rooms, piles of junk heaped around empty bedframes. Only two rooms were furnished, the guest bedroom, and what you assume to be your aunt's bedroom. Perhaps the house cleaner kept it tidy out of respect.

You were hoping that you were only imagining the manor's size, due to having spent your entire life living in cramped apartments, but as you explore the hallways the more it became clear that this was once a place that housed many people. Your grandparents, your mom, your aunt, and your three uncles. Yet only Aunt Clarissa had stayed, tending to a gigantic, lonely home.

At the very least, the house's layout seems to make more sense to you now. You must have imagined all those extra rooms jutting out from it when you first arrived, because the manor is a tidy rectangle surrounding a courtyard in its centre.

As you pass by the courtyard, you suddenly freeze. You hear more footsteps than the ones you have made. Did you forget to lock the gate? No, you did lock the gate. And the entrance was locked, as were the two backdoors your lawyer pointed out-

  • "Hello? Who's there?"
  • Stay silent and out of sight of... whoever's in here
  • Grab whatever counts as a weapon; Search the house for intruder
  • On second thought, it might just be the house settling
  • Something else... (Write-in)

Stand still, stay silent.

Prologue - 4

Stand still, stay silent.

Knowledge is power. Knowledge comes from observation. To observe, while not being observed, is advantage.

You pause and listen, concentrating on where the noise is originating from. As it turns out, this wasn't be the first time that you had to hide from somebody searching for you. You like to think of that as a badge of honor for a journalist.

Is that a tune? A hum, quiet and subtle. An improvised song, of something you haven't heard of before. It doesn't sound like a serial killer's hum, not that you'd know what that sounds like.

You hear a few snips, and the dry rustling of leaves, and then it all clicked into place.

It's just the gardener.

  • Leave the man to his work, you still have a manor to map out!
  • A chat wouldn't hurt... this man must've known your aunt
  • Sneak somewhere where you can see him and observe him a little. Have to keep your skills sharp
  • Something else... (Write-in)

Amazing, A isn't even one of the option... you step turnfuturealternatewise from where you are standing now in the 6th dimension and walk into another story. A girl in glasses is looking at you and is wondering whether or not you know a person named Vale. You see, her name is Artichoke and she's on Planet HX-43-A-ZETA to-

Prologue - 5

II

You weren't quite sure at first why your aunt had required a separate garden inside the courtyard, except out of an obligation to fill an empty space. However, now that you actually stepped inside it, you realize that the gardener is cultivating some herbs here, rather than ornamental flowers and bushes.

He snip off some more leaves, turning to acknowledge you with wide grin. You see a wrinkled prune of a man, his skin is dark and mottled, but it's difficult to tell his heritage. His eyes are that of a fox's, but his voice has a pleasant and kindly timbre rumble to it.

"Ah, you must be Ms. Ferguson's..." he glances at you, apparently trying to ascertain your gender.

"Uhh... call me Campbell," you say, awkwardly. He seems to be very old. Difficult to tell how he would react.

"Very well then, Campbell," he smiles at you, not seeming to mind.

"Terrible business with Ms. Ferguson, isn't it? I do hope she's quite alright," he says nonchalantly.

  • "What was... is my aunt like?"
  • Help him with the gardening.
  • Examine the herbs more closely
  • "Could you tell me a little more about yourself?"
  • "Could you tell me more about this town?"
  • Something else (Write-in)
