Kingdom Kyrgios - founded by the Sultan Shahryār, this kingdom borders a desert that stretches as far as the eye can see, and is a major trading port with several kingdoms within and across the desert. A city full of wonderful smells and bustling traders, it’s one of the kingdom’s financial centers. Used to be home to many gnomes, who now work in goldsmithing shops.

With an Infil-focused recruitment, a Mad Cat that does it's own thing, and eyes and ears in the woods, why not the place where trade, coin, and secrets flow. As well, gnomes to recruit more directly to our group, mess with them, nope says the cat.. and then said cat does something else to mess with them.

Fight for the Woods - Tales United - Design Phase 1
« Reply #69 on: June 04, 2020, 11:07:29 pm »

Design Phase 1

Quote from: Design: Skirmisher Gear

Whilst our forces are well equipped with courage, determination and a will to see things done, they are painful under supplied with weapons, armour and other things that will actually see the Bookbinders dealt with. Thus, we will seek to give them a basic set of gear with which they can fight back against the patriarchy. Each individual will receive either a bow and arrows, or a spear and shield, plus their choice of simple sidearm (such as a shortsword, hatchet or mace). In addition, if they don't already have their own armour (as dwarves are known to keep suits of maille for generations) they will also be given some basic protection in the form of leather jacks, padded gambesons and the like. Whilst the unit's equipment will still be a bit eclectic, they should function better than the angry villagers that they are currently.

Difficulty: Normal

Roll: (5+2)+0=7, Average

The Malabar hills are not known for their plentiful natural resources, but we've made do. A mutual restraining order with the Ogres here, a trade deal with the town there, and access to a castle's experiment pen, we have enough cloth, leather, and even a safe iron mine to make equipment for our troops.

Skirmisher Gear (1 Material/20 Units):

Enough leather jacks, padded gambesons, and basic weaponry to outfit a decent number of tales. The weapon and sidearm a unit is equipped with is decided each move phase, and can be changed later.

Quote from: Revision: Hereditary Weapons

Everyone has a sword over the mantelpiece, or a pair of spears hidden under the floorboards for when they are needed to fight the latest threat, but some of these weapons have a bit more story to them. Perhaps that sword was once used to protect the family from marauding ogres, this hunting bow was all that kept the family fed one bitingly cold winter, or the axe the last five generations used to cut wood was the one that cut an old woman out of a talking wolf. Either way, they may not seem like much, but they have all entered familial legend, and with that comes the beginnings of yokai weaponry.

Difficulty: Easy

Roll: (5+2)+1=8, Average

Jack the Third stared at the rusty axe in his hands as he walked through the woods, making his way to the rendezvous point. It had been his father's axe, and his father's axe, and once had even cut down the great beanstalk. It was rusted now, yes, but he was hesitant to polish it or regrind the edge - people might start asking questions. Resting the smooth-worn haft on his shoulder, he walked onwards to freedom, and away from the giants.

Hereditary Weapons (1 Material/5 Units): A collection of weapons passed down through the years, each with their own history. Each one may have a minor magical effect, based on it's past. This is decided on purchase. You can have duplicate effects, and each weapon doesn't need a backstory. (Though it's always nice.)

Quote from: Recruit: Kitsune

Foxes have always been thought of as spiritual, and so they are natural subjects of folklore and mythology, producing many Yokai in fox form. The most storied of these are the Kitsune.

Kitsune are mischievous but loyal spirits, and have the ability to shapeshift between human and fox form, bewitching those who seem them and casting powerful illusions to misdirect and confuse. They are well known to protect the people and places they care for, forming close bonds with the objects of their attention, even being known to marry those individuals if they prove to be honourable and caring.

Difficulty: Hard (Illusions bumped it up from Normal, sorry for the misread earlier)

Roll: (1+5)-1=5, Below Average

Jack the Third was sent out to recruit the Yokai of the fox, with simple instructions - find the trickster fox. The Green Knight needed the support, and they would help very much with infiltration of the Bookbinder-surveiled kingdoms. As Jaxon walked down the road, he passed through a small town, quiet and sleepy. Livestock moo'd at him, and he was quickly past the small wooden huts. Shorty after the town, he came upon three sisters sitting alongside the road in a cart, each as beautiful as the other, and all very beautiful.

"What is your business, traveller?" The first sister asked, her round face beaming upon him.

"Well, I was walking out to the woods. I need to find some foxes," he answered, feeling a level of inherent trust in these beautiful women.

"Foxes?" The second sister asked, "Haven't you heard, good sir? There aren't any foxes left out there."

Jack tried to hide his surprise, but failed. "I-I was told some would still be hiding by my friend… We've been rather lonely, see, and could use some animal companionship."

The third sister laughed, melodic and delighted. "Good sir, what is your name?"

"Jack the Third, madam."

"Why don't the three of us come back with you? We could help your 'friend' out. We lost our foxes ourselves, you see," she said, standing up and walking over to embrace Jack.

Jack blushed and drew back. He was a plain looking man, and never one to catch the womanly eye. "I-I suppose we could go talk to him. You wouldn't happen to be with the Bookbinders, right?"

The three sisters shuddered in unison at the name of Rafal's inquisition. "Perish the though, fellow sir. We want nothing to do with them."

Jack looked up and down the path, and then beckoned them to follow back to headquarters.

-----

"Who are these women, Jack?" The Green Knight asked, terse and annoyed.

"They said they would help us find the foxes like you asked me to do," Jack replied."

"I told you not to return without the trickster foxes," he replied, his voice slithering through his green helm.

"We can go looking tomorrow, sir! It'll pay off, I promise!" Jack begged, getting on one knee.

"Fine. Leave me, I have a border treaty to negotiate with an Ogre."

Jack slinked away, and back to the sisters. "Sorry about that, fair ladies."

They giggled in response, "It's okay, Jack, we'll help you find these "trickster foxes" tomorrow."

Jack woke up next morning in the village. As he was rubbing his eyes, he heard a familiar voice. "Good morning, Jack"

Three white foxes lay curled around his bed.

Kitsune (1 Beings/5 Units): Benevolent fox protector spirits, these foxes are a pure white, and can take human form at will. In addition, they also seem to have the ability to trick people with visions and illusions. Reluctant to commit evil acts, but trickery is fine.

Spoiler: Cheshire Cat Writeup (click to show/hide)

Difficulty: Hard

Roll: (1+6)-1=6, Average

Nobody knows why the Cat left Wonderland. Nobody knows if this is the same Cat. But the appearance in the headquarters tells us all we need to know; we need the Cheshire Cat on our side.

The Green Knight cordially handed it a shining jewel. "Come and go as you please, we have whatever you need." The Cheshire Cat purred softly, and grinned a long toothy grin. Scratching a smile into the table, it faded away. The Green Knight was left standing long, holding another gem similar to the one he had handed the cat. Contact had been made.

Character: Cheshire Cat

You may make one request of the cat each movement phase, that will take place during the Raid phase. You can ask the Cheshire Cat to deploy on a raid. Requests must rhyme.

Base: Malabar Hills

You have chosen the Malabar hills as your headquarters. The Green Knight has made his base in the town, linking together several underground rooms and storefronts with secret doors and hidden tunnels. This is where the Green Knight will stay when not deployed.

Bonus: Recruiting Bonus

Movement Phase 1

This turn, you may select three locations in the Woods to raid, and send squads out to attack them, deciding specific tactics and objectives in the Raid phase. You do not have to send all your units now - any units you have in reserve will automatically move to defend Tales operations against raids by the Bookbinders, albeit with a delay due to not being able to use the Vinepath easily. In addition, during the Raid phase, you may send extra reinforcements, again with a delay, to any attack location.

The three raids limit is for my sanity.

Intel 1

Camelot: King Arthur's Treasure

The ancient King's treasure is on display in the castle. It's under heavy guard, but is immensely powerful.

Control: Royal Guard
Stability: Stable

Jaunt Jolie - Impound Yard

Rafal had a very simple solution to the pirates that resisted him - just take their ships away. These ships are hidden in a quiet cove along the coast, heavily guarded.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Stable (by Jaunt Jolie standards)

Foxwood - Straw and Gold

The natural quiet of Foxwood was not broken by the unrest sweeping the woods, though it's suspected some fighting still took place locally. The mysterious shipments of straw this summer were all intercepted, but the King wants to ensure that the royal currency is untainted by Rumplestiltkin's gold.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Foxwood

The Stymph Forest - Quiet

All is quiet in the Stymph forest. The skeletal birds swoop through the trees, screeching in peace.

Control: Nobody
Stability: N/A

Bloodbrook - The Blood Moon

Bookbinders have made it their number one priority in this area to hunt down and eradicate the werewolves that plague the (more) rural areas of Bloodbrook. The bandit king fully supports this, as they have a long-standing grudge against the werewolves due to an old tale involving hideouts and the woods.

Control: Bandit King (Bookbinder ally)
Stability: Stable

Sherwood Forest - Casual Banditry

The concept of "Robbery" is different in Sherwood Forest. Most robberies are non-lethal, purely out of tradition. However, Rafal did not take kindly to the constant theft of the King's war funds, however noble the thieves may be. As such, the thieves have been ordered to "get a real job" under threat of death. Results are mixed so far.

Control: Sheriff of Nottingham (Bookbinder Ally)
Stability: Stable

Malabar Hills - The Old Cathedral

An old cathedral stands tall in the town of Malabar Hills, still active, but forever haunted by the legend of the man with half a mask. It was said he knew the entire building like the back of his hand, but has been unseen for over a century. Local ogres have hired to aid in the restoration to repair damaged caused during the uprising.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Stable

The Ruined Estate - Quiet

All is quiet, the Blue Forest standing proud. The sludge moat gurgles on.

Control: Nobody
Stability: N/A

Kingdom Kyrgios - The Golden Spindle

The gnomes who now work in shops once worked the marketplaces of Kingdom Kyrgios. Their jobs now taken by both foreign traders and ambitious humans, these gnomes toil away day after day, making coins for the royal Mint. They're also starting to make jewelry to help fund Kyrgios itself.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Moderate (Foreign Traders)

Borna Coric - A King's Legacy

The Black Knight was entombed in his battle gear, a legendary set of armor and weapons that was originally to be passed down to his son. It's under heavy guard, lest the Green Knight attempt to claim his inheritance.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Stable

Maidenvale - A Dragon's Hoard

The dragons supported Rafal very firmly, aside from one or two who preferred raiding to hoarding. With the pesky knights no longer bothering them, they were free to curl up on their gold in relative peace, though Rafal insisted they make contact with the banking system to help provide an additional source of loans to financial institutions.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Stable

Ravenwood - Old Enemies and Older Grudges

During the initial backlash to the Bookbinders and the king's coronation edict, Ravenwood was mysteriously calm. It turned out that the witches had simply put a sleep spell on the entire quarter of town the witch hunter families lived in. Rafal came in and bullied the witches into breaking the spell, but an uneasy truce remains here, especially with the witch hunters depleted from the earlier fighting.

Control: Witches (Truce with Rafal)
Stability: Stable

Avalon - Murmurs of Discontent

Rumors tell you that all is not well behind the shining walls of Avalon. Your sources aren't exactly *clear* on what's going on, but you have reason to suspect not every knight is happy about the decisions the bookbinders have been making.

Control: Bookbinders
Stability: Tenuous

Spoiler: Current Troops (click to show/hide)

Cat's Mischief

Murmurs of Discontent, so the Cat went.
The people resent, far kingdom's dissent.
Bookbinders Lament, the Tale's Torment.
The Cat represents, a Revolution's Ascent.
As Avalon, it Reinvents.

Send the Cat to stir up trouble and bring Avalon to the Revolution, the side of the Tales, all to the Bookbinder's Lament, at the Cat's Torment.

I wouldn't go for Camelot's treasure quite yet without a getaway yokai.

Movement Plan: Trickery, Guile, & Gold.

Foxwood - Straw and Gold
1 Unit of Disgruntled Tales, 2 Units of Kitsune, 1 Heritage Weapon set, 1 Skirmisher Gear set.

Heritage: Bows of Robin Hood's Merry Men- To Disgruntled Tales Unit
Bows once used by those who followed Robin Hood in stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. They have gained the quality of allowing those who wield them to go unseen and quite through the forest, improving one's ability to ambush, sneak, and steal without notice by authorities until it was too late. Boosts Sneak/Theft rate of Unit they are assigned to.

Skirmisher Gear- To Disgruntled Tales Unit
Club(sidearm) and Bows(main), along with the rest of the set.

Goal: Straw to Gold
Steal the shipments of straw back from the Bookbinders, and give them to Rumplestiltkin to turn into gold. This gold can then be used to buy materials and discredit the new King's rule. After all, if you can't secure the economy, you aren't much of a king.

Kingdom Kyrgios - The Golden Spindle
1 Unit of Kitsune, The Green Knight.

Goal: Making Trades & Connections
Make connections with foreign traders and other sympathetic interests, in the goal of destabilizing the new King's economy and buying materials, through the use of gold gained through the Straw to Goad operation. Note: This is not a combat mission. The Green Knight is here to make connections, not fight the bookbinders.

Avalon - Murmurs of Discontent: Cat's Mischief
The Cheshire Cat.

Murmurs of Discontent, so the Cat went.
The people resent, far kingdom's dissent.
Bookbinders Lament, the Tale's Torment.
The Cat represents, a Revolution's Ascent.
As Avalon, it Reinvents.

You can send more than one squad on a raid - helpful for tactics such as decoys.

Generally I see Foxwood as our kitsune acting as scouts and tricksters/illusionists helping the main unit of fifty to perform stealthily. Our Watchers in the Woods bonus also helps in not entering direct combat. Once direct combat with Bookbinder forces occurs, any hope of stealth is out the window. If we are never caught be them however, we can perform optimally.

Quote from: Mordred
Mordred, Knight of teenage Rebellion
The words of the horned knight, stomping through every corner of the woods in his fierce silver armor, highlighted with red, naturally came to the attention of the United Tales quickly. When they had heard he was looking for the Green Knight, they knew they had to step in and contact him before he found them and lead the Bookbinders right to them. The plan was simple, their kitsune would track down the knight when next he appeared, before he got to making a ruckus, and the Green Knight would follow. Luckily, his next appearance was not in the hills, helping to drag suspicions of our whereabouts elsewhere. And so, the Kitsune set out, and the plan was put into motion...

The Green Knight stepped out of the woods, he was... surprisingly well hidden, considering his heavy armor. The color of it left him more concealed in a normal forest than any Knight in full plate had any right to be. Which was... still not very well, but noticeable.

"Oi!" Shouted the horned stranger. To hear the stories of the intimidating figure with the large blade and horned armor was one thing, to meet them was... something entirely different. The armored figure stood a whole two heads shorter than the Green Knight, and his voice was far... higher, than one would imagine, even of a squire. "Took ya long enough. These Bookbinders really got ya that scared?"

"Who are you?" The Green Knight inquired plainly.

"Really, bastard didn't even bother to tell anyone about me before he fucked off on some adventure..." The horned knight shakes his head as the hilt of his blade is passed from the right hand to the left with a clink. "Names Mordred. Mordred Pendragon."

Though no one could see them behind his helmet, the Green Knights eyes where wide. "Then you are..."

"Yup. Surprise, Arthur's got an heir... and he couldn't give less of a shit about it."

It came to the surprise of many that King Arthur had, apparently, had a son. Not just that, but a bastard child. A child born of himself, and Morgause, sister to Morgan Le Fey, and thus half-sister to Arthur himself. Morgause may not be a powerful witch like her sister, but half her bloodline is still that of the Fair Folk. Thus, Mordred is a quarter Fae on his mothers side, and, apparently, a quarter dragon on his fathers. Yet... nobody has seen the boy, and he is but a boy unless Arthur had been having children prior to taking the throne, outside of his armor, or at least any who will say so. Even the helmet stays on at seemingly all times. This seems to be true of the Green Knight as well thus far, but where he is our leader, this Mordred is a relative unknown. We managed to receive some confirmation on his words out of the Cat but, when asked if the boy really was, well, a boy, the only response we received was; "Well, he certainly feels that way"

Regardless, Mordred is a formidable fighter. Though he throws himself into battle like a raging berserker from the north, the skill and strength with which he fights is not to be underestimated, moving with surprising speed and agility despite his heavy armor and weapon. He has shown to duel the Green Knight to a standstill in sparring matches, and when Mordred is enraged his blade, Clarent, ignites, able to melt metal with prolonged contact(so like, it wouldn't melt through armor in one strike, but he could melt through a blade while blocking it) and setting flammable materials alight. And with his magical ancestry, curses hold less grip upon him, and general magical attacks seem moderately less effective

His flaws however, well, Mordred is not exactly the kind of person to attend fancy gatherings. He much prefers a clash of blades to words, and lacks skill in the latter. Additionally, his armor, though well crafted, is entirely ordinary, it will not stand up to magical attacks and heavy blows as well as the body underneath would. And while his draconic and fae blood makes him more resistant against general magic, it also means that weapons and spells designed to be used against them will hold effect against him as well, more than they would a normal human at least.
