Another update on the Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/songsofsyx/songs-of-syx/posts/2876080
Main topics of this update are world and worldgen improvements and preliminary pass on implementing KS in-game rewards (credits, landmarks, etc.)

Looks like the pre-KS demo (v.51.30) is available on itch.io, listed as tech demo.

I bet some of you thought I was now at a sunny beach, spending the Kickstarter money on drinks and Cocaine.
:D
Nice to see the prototype is available again, it was a very good demo to showcase the potential of his game.
The article show some very interesting progress.

Rise chicken!  Chicken arise!

Heck of a necro, I know.  But I kept seeing bits about this game recently, not even sure where.  There's a demo on Steam, and I spent a good bit of the weekend playing it.  Pretty decent, although the demo version is not being updated & is some versions behind.

Part of what had put me off from looking closer at this game was the emphasis on the "massive battle" aspect.  But the "early game" that I've been playing is more of a colony builder type, and it's pretty decent.  Especially when you consider it's a one-man project.  Didn't pull the trigger on it yet, but it's still only $25 for the full game; I've had enough fun with it that I can see myself putting lots of time into it, and will probably buy it soon.

On the old demo (i think it's older than the demo you got on steam), it seemed the battles were working the same as in old versions of Dwarf Fortress (from before "world activation" ) : invasions of your settlement were being progressively bigger each time, so i guess with enough time and your city increasing in size and pop, battles could become massive.
No idea on how it is now on the full game.

As an example in the old demo :
First invasion, a simple regiment of raiders that is mercilessly destroyed by 2.5 regiments of mine :

Much later, another invasion, of a larger scale (3 or 4 enemies regiments) that utterly annihilate my own troops
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=154091.msg8125927#msg8125927

oh and later discovered why my troops were being annihilated so fast, they weren't auto-equipping their weapons and armor :

the game is pretty large in scope, been playing it for a week now. Feels pretty good. needs some balancing, but running around with 6k pop is impressive without the slowdown of doom.

I cant wait to see what this game bring in the next year. soon to have artifacts etc. lots of little details.

This game is pretty great, once you realize you're meant to build on a huge scale (or at least plan ahead for that), and found the planning toggle button.
I have been playing the free demo for the past week, which is 3 versions behind the main version, and will be updated along with it, for as long as the game is in EA.
Pretty nice and friendly concept.

Tempted to buy the full game, although 20 euros is a bit steep for my budget.

I have not played this, but the graphics of the game reminded me of Lords of the Realm I / II. Top-down, kinda low res.. and 'wiggly'.

Also the general theme of medieval harvesting and large army combat. I wonder if there was a connection, perhaps?

The gameplay is entirely different though, outside of the fact that there exists real-time battles with several units. The settlement development and management is wildly different, as is the overall economy, and even those battles play out in a very different fashion. It's certainly not impossible that the dev has played Lords of the Realm, but personally I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that there's any stronger connection than that. There are, after all, a great number of medieval-themed games out there, many of them with both farming and fighting... I don't think they're all homages to that particular classic :P

Is there a good guide to this game? I find myself getting overwhelmed playing--and the Steam guides are... out of date? I think?

While I can't give you a link to any good guide, I can give you some basic tips.
Most of the game isn't too hard to figure out, it's pretty intuitive.

1) harvest wild plants. They will be a really substantial addition to farming and keeping your food stocks up, up until about population 1000

2) think big. It's okay to space things out, walking distance matters, but not that much.

3) trade. Sell stuff you can easily produce and fetches a good price (stone), buy stuff to progress (iron, tools, clothes).

4) get a lavatory / dormitory up and running ASAP. This will increase happiness, which in turn provides you with more immigrants.

5) don't neglect lights / monuments. It will help with happiness. Note that you can build statue monuments, which require cut stone, but you can also build trees, which don't need cut stone. Statues improve Awe, trees improve Harmony.

6) You can resize lots of furniture and other things using the q and e buttons while placing them.

7) building shapes matter somewhat. Some races like square / rectangular buildings, others like more rounded or irregular shapes.

8) 'dig canal' needs no connection to water. You can irrigate your farms anywhere on the map by simply digging enough channel next to it. It will draw water from a hidden rescource, water table. It shows how much you have left when designating dig canal orders.

9) keep a spare force of unemployed workers at all times. About 10-20% of your total population sounds about right.
Not only will they build, chop and harvest wild plants, it's also nice to have a buffer when starting an army. Subjects that are training are not available for labour.

10) I believe invasions only start to have a chance of appearing after population 100. You can build up basic infrastructure etc at leisure if you keep you population below that.

11) You can assign tools to various labours via the labour screen. Click the little tools icon on that screen. Don't go too wild there, tools will need replacing, if you assign too many you will have tool shortages.

Oh, one more:

You don't need iron to build woodcutters or coal/ore mines. The iron mentioned in their somewhat misleading tooltip is only required for the auxiliaries.
You can build them without auxiliaries, they will work at 40% efficiency. Then, when you acquire some iron, you can always add auxiliaries to them to get their production up to 100%.

Decided after more than 50h of demo play that I should buy the game.

Playing the new beta 0.59 now.
It's ofcourse still EA, not complete, and new versions bring new bugs.
The dev is very actively fixing those though.
