Um . . . is this a points budget thing where we have to meet a certain total size criteria, or do we just keep throwing things on and hope we can afford to build it?

No idea!

"We need some proper guns on this thing. Get it done!"

Stardate 25.3.5

"Re-designing completed, Director!" The Chief Designer shows you the holopad.

Spoiler: Cruiser Design 001-B (click to show/hide)

"The main batteries needed space, so we got rid of some fuel tanks and spare batteries. That also shortens the operational range of the design, but! The inertia and thrust can be more easily managed thanks to that."

A) "That's more like it! Begin building the prototype now."
B) "No, no, this is all wrong. Redesign it again, and... (specify Mark types to adjust)"
C) "Actually, the first one was better. Let's build that instead!"

Yeah sorry, someone blew up a street in my state and took the internet down for multiple days with it.
This really happened. 2020 was wild.

You send the design for the approval of the Parliament.

The Parliament approves.

Stardate 25.4

The hull of UEPC Oceanic is being built at the Titan Drydocks!

Stadate 25.5

As the cruiser is being constructed, there's a more and more tension in the air. The people of Altair colonies have filled a major complaint against the Parliament, citing that they're working themselves off for benefit of Earth.

There have been also incidents of the rioting and assaults on Parliamentary police forces in Ross 128.

Stardate 25.6

You watch from the window screen as UEPC Oceanic leaves the drydock. The big starship bristles with small turrets, and its quadruple main ion thrusters look like gigantic welding torches.

All-in-all, it costed 22 M.Credits from Ship Design Bureau's budget to construct the ship.

Spoiler: Budget Tally (click to show/hide)

This ship is now a Prototype, which means it requires to undergo several tests and cruises before it can be said to be truly completed. During the testing, there will be inevitably a reevaluation of its performance and flaws in the design shall become visible.

A) "Pfft, my team did a good job. Let's tell the Parliament we're done - they will reward us for finishing our job before deadline!"
B) "Off to the testing field with you, Oceanic! I don't want to give away a ship that breaks apart when someone pushes the wrong button onboard."

You send the Oceanic for testing.

Stardate 25.6.1

Quote
3

Oceanic undergoes series of combat tests.

It quickly proves that the turrets, while possessing great tracking capability and turning speed, are quite lacking in arc-of-fire coverage, resulting in few blind spots, mostly due to external hull bits in the way, or due to gun turrets inability to depress below certain degree of firing.

This forced your designers to re-assess Oceanic's AFC rating from 3 to 2.

Stardate 25.6.3

Oceanic undergoes a series of space travel and stress tests.

Quote
5

Chief Designer Al-Fadil is pleased to report that nothing is wrong with the design in these fields. Thrusters, engine and the hull are just as they should be.

Mrs.Volantis, your Science Director, is requesting a meeting with you and other department heads. She and her team want to show you preeliminary report on their findings on something called 'Warp Fields', as well as ask for better funding for Engine research.

A) "No!"
B) "Alright, let's have a meeting. I'm quite curious about those 'Warp Fields' myself."
