That menu is similar to other menus. What is the fight about?

Cannot see what weapons are assigened to a squad ? see post earlier.
It's a frustrating thing all those gui in DF ..in one way a challence, but on the other hand needless to puzzle on this
Yes, a missed chance for the developer of dwarf fortress to make a popular game for all.

Now with the upcoming steam release, it will probably much better to give orders in DF.

After you make the uniform which includes the weapon type (or dwarfs' choice of weapon), you assign it using "e" then "U". When assigning the uniform, if you hit "shift-enter" it applies to all 10 positions in the squad, if just "enter" then only for the currently selected dwarf in the squad.

You can also pick exactly specific individual weapons & armor pieces for each dwarf (if you want to spend lots of time) but I only rarely do that to assign an artifact or very special item to a particular dwarf. This is a bit different procedure.

m - military menu
e - equip
The menu lists squads to the left. In the middle the members of the squad. To the right is their equipment.
Move arrow up/down to the squad of choice. Then arrow to right and then up/down to chosen soldier.
From menu above pick a choice now. A - armor, L - legs, H-Helm.... W- weapon.
W - weapon (not "w" but "W")
On the right a new menu shows instead of equipment listing.
Select "specific weapon" and press enter.
Scroll for the weapon you want to assign and press enter on it again.
The weapon is assigned.
Enjoy :)

(to remove weapon from assignment, just select the assigned weapon in equipment listing of a soldier and press enter on it.)

I hope it helps some. To understand those menus for first time is a tough job. ;)

How to assign a weapon? : is it for the whole squad ..
Others posted most of this already but I already wrote it so I am posting my reply too...

It can be assigned to the whole squad, or just to one" squad position" (the "squad position" is assigned the weapon, and the dwarf is assigned to the "squad position", then the dwarf picks up the weapon).

You can assign a weapon three ways:
1) assign a uniform to the entire squad; 'm' 'e' 'U', navigate to squad, navigate to uniform, 'shift+Enter'
2) assign a uniform to one squad position; 'm' 'e' 'U', navigate to squad position, navigate to uniform, 'Enter'
3) assign a weapon to one squad position; 'm' 'e' navigate to squad position, 'W', select specific or non-specific weapon, 'Enter'

Thanks all
With this i must be able to get my way in setting up a squad i think
It was that after choosing a "specific weapon" i aspected that there was a weapon assigned, but there was not.

It will take a moment for a civilian Dwarf to pick his assigned equipment. Dwarf will carry it around all the time.
Only exception are Dwarves with civilian professions miner, woodcutter and hunter.
These will not pick assigned equipment, when still civilian.
These will pick the weapon only when called to arms and drafted through "s" menu or when in soldier scheduled training.
Training has to be enabled in alert menu. Alert menu is in "m"-menu together with schedule, position and equipment assignment.

I hope it helps some.

Yes , it helps a lot, because i was wondering when the dorfs get their weapons withthem, when i look in their inventory.
It could be that they are not in training ..or there was no selected weapon in stock ( if not there is no message of this )

What is "individual choice, weapon"  -> ? .. automatically pick up the dorf a weapon what suit him most, given his military skills

Another thing is how the squads are drink and eat : in their barracks with table and  chairs ( maybe a diningroom connected with barrack ? .. i must then assign a dedicated foodpile for the military

in "m" menu you have "u"-supplies. Change water and food amounts to "do not carry water" and "do not carry food". Why?
Food is bugged and spoiled master quality will cause your cook emotional distress, which currently can easy lead to cook's death.
Water/alcohol get spilled constantly all around annoyingly.

You have soldier Dwarves in two instances.
When you call them into training.  "m"-"s" to set up, then "m"-"a" to enable.
When you use the "s"-menu to call your military squads into action. To take position or to kill something. You can hunt with your military instead of your hunters btw.

The military, when in training or in call of duty will eat food directly on spot, where they picked it up and return to duty/exercises. No bonuses from dining in legendary dinning room. So my advice is to keep monthly training to only 2 soldiers per squad. If you keep 1 month for all 10 soldier Dwarves, then make sure next month is training free. This way you will ensure that your military will get bonus moods and in majority will not go into depression and insanity. Dwarves drink the same way, without mugs.

So keep soldiers mostly as haulers with exception of few at one time to do military stuff. Military Dwarves so long they have assigned beds/rooms, will use those to sleep, Don't change it, so they keep getting sleep bonuses.

I started without training weapons and in fact they do train at the moment probably without weapons, at least not all of them?
Not sure about this, so i decided to make dedicated bedrooms for the squad members so that they can drop their armor and weapons ( indiv Eq option on)

Some caravan are welcome for the needed weapons, so doing "missions" can propel this weapon need.
Or focussing now also on the finding of iron ores, but perhaps (wooden) bows or crossbows ( can be used by all squadmembers )
Its likely that in DF a soldier not can have a bow and a melee weapon as can be seen somewhere else ?
The weaponskill of a dorf gives a idea what weapon he (is there a preference for a become a squadmmeber : man or woman) can use
A shield is also important in battle as i readed.

Its a mess the assignment of members of squads at the moment : can't see what dorfs are free for assigning : is it a green color naming ?

Note: food is bugged ..you mean that it is not good working (programmed).
That expected steam edition should that adress all existing bugs and solve them ?

Certainly not all. Any software in serious use has thousands of known unfixed bugs.

But good software has low number of crippling bugs - in case of DF it would be bugs crippling entire mechanism of game or especially obnoxious or crashing game. There is hope that Steam release will see serious fixing of them.

They can train without weapons, and without armor. Military do not need dedicated bedrooms, they will use their "civilian" bed.

You can also make weapons out of copper, and some other metals. Wiki has charts. These weapons will work well for most opponents.

Its likely that in DF a soldier not can have a bow and a melee weapon as can be seen somewhere else ?
If the dwarf has two hands, they can have a crossbow and a melee weapon. Or, a crossbow and shield, or a shield and melee weapon, or two melee weapons.

A shield is also important in battle as i readed.
Shields are very helpful for unskilled dwarfs, but not necessary.

Its a mess the assignment of members of squads at the moment : can't see what dorfs are free for assigning : is it a green color naming ?
When you are in the 'm' screen, there are three columns (squad names, squad members, dwarfs that can be assigned. Move down the third column, and if a dwarf is in a squad, you will see in the upper right corner what squad they are in.

There are a lot of bugs in DF( seems to me as not expert) and enough to solve for the developer of DF, but that will be not a easy task ?
I readed some long time ago that someone predicts that further writing the DF software, with the used software/programming style  would be ended in a mess

With this all this bugs, it looks to go that way  be out of control ?

What should be the use of dropping equipment in the barrack then if the bedroom is in there?

Its about making a new squad (if there is/are existing ones) , and in the middle shows what dorfs are free.
