Performance Monitoring for Steam Release
« on: April 02, 2020, 05:50:37 am »

For the Fortress Mode Steam release, I was wondering if it would help players to give them in-game hardware/software performance feedback on potential sources that could cause FPS death, before they happen, and tools to more "easily" clean up or prevent the problems.

That way they don't have to abandon a fort or lose interest because suddenly fort management becomes more about being able to even play the game from a functional standpoint.

Not sure if something like this is possible, but I've read threads on how the game could perform better, but I was thinking there is always an upper limit to the simulation even if the code was the best coded game in existence.

In that way, no matter what an individual player's upper limit is based on their hardware, fort design, and other circumstances, they will have tools that can look at the game code and give feedback on how to solve FPS performance problems.

It would be a better use of time to just fix the issues rather than telling the player about them.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Yeah agreed, that was part of the post.

Say you have an explosion of ducks and cats which drops the player's FPS significantly to the point where they have to spend several hours waiting for the fort to butcher them all.  They may not initially realize the reason why, the solution, and then achieving that solution in a reasonable amount of time before losing interest.

I agree a "fix" would be great for any given issue, I just don't think it's that easy and likewise I have no idea if what I'm suggesting is even possible.  I'm sure many solutions including something like this have already been considered in some form, but I didn't come across a post so I figured I'd ask.
