But, yeah, Legends will tell you how they died if you remember their names. In future remember to check "r" for reports, it'll show you any violent goings on (including when logs fall on woodcutters).

That's nice to know that someone will examine for what was going on with the disappeared dorfs ( the corpse pile is full of material remains ).
 i can leave a copy there on the filedepot (under miscellaneous ?), although its too late to save the fortress

If you open up Legends Mode, find your site (under Sites, start from the bottom of the list and move up, sites you played will be highlighted), you should be able to scroll through all the events of your fortress and see how dwarves died. 17 dead dwarves should be easy to spot.

I did with: legend_plus.xml and legends.xml

I got a page with the name of the civilization/goverment  and fortress name and could read the events
Seems to me that 17 dorfs get strucked/suffocated/bled

There is also a event log, but why there are 17 dorfs killed in the fortress  ?

Presumably they were attacked by some wild animals. We're the caverns open. There should be more detailed info than that in Legends.

This fortress has no entrance to cavern and was some z-level deep..and all 17 dorfs were killed by other dorfs
Find out more...from the event log ( some filtering possible) on this : why the 17 dorfs are killed

0250-09-25 In 250, late autumn, (25th of Timber) Udil went berserk in Walleddiamond after failing to create an artifact. change hf state
0250-09-25 In 250, late autumn, (25th of Timber) Udil was struck down by the dwarf Ubbul Slingtaut the Diamond Virtue with a (693) in (my fortress) Walleddiamond.

Now i know why Udil was strucked down by Ubbul : Udil became dangerous and maybe was Ubbul attacked by her?

Yeah, i can filter on date and event ( death), so the first died dwarf can be examined and  0n 250-09-25

In 250, late autumn, (25th of Timber) the dwarf Ber Moralmined was struck down by the dwarf Vutok Letterswallowed the Brass Brain of Teeth with a (578) in Walleddiamond

Vutok has killed more dorfs (5 on same date) and why ? and Ber had a normal mood
Vutok used as murder weapon: with a (578) ?
Vutok is a female and her goal was: create a great work of art
Vutok ..nothing to find about her mood
Vutok ..one day later she was killed by a another dorf Ubbul with a (693?) ( why?)

Could not find more ..maybe it was the stress level, because the dwarves became thirsty ( probably the drinksupply was not well done by me, unfortunaly still )

Loyalty cascade. Happens from time to time. Probably someone killed the beserk dwarf after he attacked someone randomly. Then a bunch of other dwarves joined in on each side. Killed each other.

Was there a another way to handle against a beserk dorf in the fortress ?
Yes, should be more complicated in DF to judge the emotions on common sense

The dorf has the right to defend itself when he is attacked, and maybe better to kick out the beserked dwarf from the fortress.
No .. it is very dangerous to handle a beserked  dorf , because  he/she is crazily violent.

Basically, don't let your strange moods fail. And build a wall around a dwarf if it looks like they're going to fail.

It's one of the few set-piece "game" parts of the game remaining from many years ago. Most have been replaced by more natural simulation. Just a "drop everything, desk with this now or suffer" feature.

Can't find anything about a missing hand
A miner is now dying and i see in his wound summary that some body parts are orange or red
Are those bodyparts then severely hurt him ?

He is starving ( in red color) and dehydrated ( in red too )
His left upper arm /right lower arm / righthand/ lefthand are all orange colored
Conclusion: he cannot drink anymore ?
Further..  right wrist/ankle broken and third finger and right hand are red colored ( missing bodyparts?

The miner is not making it ?-- only 4 dorfs left ..
The only hope if there are migrants arriving to survive the fortress, but when..is there a prediction?

Got a small message popping up at right bottom : looks he is dead ...from who ?

Maybe you don't have a functioning hospital or soap.  If you don't have soap, almost any injury can lead to infection which can lead to falling over dead with no obvious cause at some later time.  Their bodies will still generally be found, though.

You could also have walled them up somewhere they starved.

Sometimes it helps to engrave slabs.

If you inspect them after engraving with the name of a dead person you get to see how he/she died. In the case of fighting between dwarves should show who and when.
