Recently my fortress was attacked by elves.  I was in the process of reorganizing the military so I just blocked access to my fort and the elves gave up fairly quickly and began walking off the map.  This when I noticed that there were a few elves in the air several z-levels above the ground.  At first I though they might have been flung by a bridge or be on mounts, but neither was the case.  In fact, following the elves with the game unpaused they were basically just flying around the map.  I was just wondering if anyone has an explanation for this? The only not standard thing about the game is that I made giant wolves war trainable, but this does not seem like it should have caused it.

That's not normal.
Are you sure they weren't riding flying beasts?

I checked the tiles the elves were in and tiles near them, but no other creatures are listed.  The only flying creatures on the surface are a giant kestrel and a great horned owl, but neither is near any of the elves.

Elf soldiers are represented by "ë". If you see "e", they are probably eagles.

If it's an ambush, perhaps not until they're discovered.

Yeah...but is spotting the elves but not their riders actually a thing? Hmm. Maybe it is now with the weird stealth effects.

Try attacking one, see if anyone is attacked by a giant unseen beast.

If there are any invisible mounts, they'll be "visible" in the units list with DFHack from an uploaded save. Regardless, it's odd.

They won't if the stealth weirdness is carrying over to the ambush mechanic in which units not spotted aren't listed (or visible on the map). And elves are ambushers.

Ah, sorry, in Dfhack, yeah maybe. Does that list all the units in an ambush?
