Missions how they go and how to execute
« on: March 24, 2020, 11:23:27 am »

How to start a mission: for example one squad (with one squad member for now): from where is the mission started in or out fortress ?
What to see if a squad is going on mission  ( following is that possible ?)

I understood that once a squad is sent to a raid, there is no tracking of the squad on the worldmap.?
Are there coming announcements to aspect ?
Only now the distance off  the to be raided spot is known.

There's a few bugs (of course!) but basically.
c to bring up the world map.
Scroll around, find some bad guys (or good guys, anyone that's not your civ).
r to raid this site.
d to set the details of the raid (sneaky, outright attack, demand tribute, etc).
Esc done with details.
Enter, choose a squad.

(Don't send your expedition leader, or you won't ever be able to make new squads).

Esc done.

They'll leave. When (if) they come home you'll get a report of their mission on the reports page (r) in yellow highlight.

On the world map screen there are other options which can send out missions.
p-People to set up rescue missions: Broken (you can rescue people with a regular raid instead).

a- Artifacts: Artifacts last seen held by someone cannot be recovered. Others can, but expect your squad to be gone for a year or so as they follow clues to find the artifact.

In the future you'll be able to follow squads in a separate window to see how they do. Will be a few years before that though.

Following the squads should be  helpful feature with a time scheme
Only the squads seems to self supporting for food then ?

I assigned a expedition leader to the squad and made his profession : soldier.
That is conflicting for making new squads as you pointed out.
Finding back the expedition leader ( that's was his former profession, right?) in the fortress is not that easy yet.
I am still searching for the former expedition leader what i reassigned now from the squad and he was a soldier in the squad.

Expedition leader will be listed on your nobles screen (n). He gets replaced by a mayor some time after your population grows beyond 50.

Well, i try to send a someone to a elven civilization, but how to find on the (h) Holdings and tribute screen?
I take the surrounding spots, but no elven civilization

Can't  do this structured , because it are too much spots  and go from left to right. .tile columns.its too much asked
The status icon of the elven civ is not to find too with this tileset
I am stuck now.

That'll be the difficulty of tilesets. Elven sites usually look like an 'î' or something similar - unlikely the tileset would change that much. Yellow in color.

Holdings are YOUR holdings. Just pressing c from the main game puts you in the right menu for making missions. In the c menu, it's '[w]orld'.

You raid sites, not civilizations. You don't just send out a squad and say "harass the first elves you meet" (although potentially that might be interesting, send out a team to build a bandit camp and harass the neighbours by themselves).

Just pick some place close to you.

Yes,that is also a way of doing this mission goals
I found now: in circles spotting around my fortress , but there is a chance to miss a target and i just send two naked dwarfs (brrr) to two civilizaton habitations.

Note: i am now playing a earlier saved fortress what is destroyed and that is a good startpoint to get more in the gamemechanics.
Now i can myself  completetely concntrating on trading. ( to get a stronger military )

Try to provoke( with a one-time tribute) that more caravans coming my way to the fortress
-A friendly civ .. reject the tribute
There is no possibilty to ask friendly caravans ?

Now there is inspring a elven caravan arrived, but cannot trade with them
What do they trigger to trade with my fortress?

When you want trade you need to demand tribute and HOPE they reject it. That's how you make contact currently (don't recommend doing that in the real world).

If a caravan arrives you can typically trade with them when they've unloaded their goods. However, if they have been scared by sufficient numbers of dead bodies, attacks by wildlife, etc. they may get bugged.

Got some messages that it was rejected this one time tribute by the friendly civilizations
It is not a big reason for starting a war against me(casus belli) ( i don't dare this with a hostile civ, then war )

When the elven caravan arrived i could bring goods to them, that was the start , but i passed , then nothing happens anymore to buy from the elves
How long do they stay? ( 2 months ?) and in the fortress was nothing what could horrify the elven merchant(s)
They came without a wagon and maybe they pass the corpse pile ?

Caravans stay about a month, so 2 months means they're bugged. Elves do not use wagons, so that's not a problem. If you've got a pile of corpses of sapients, yes, that's an issue. Don't have such piles in the open, visible for everyone to see (in particular if you have necro neighbors). In the past caravans were extremely skittish. Half a goblin tooth seen by any merchant was enough for the caravan to turn tail and flee, with draft animals and wagons seeing the tooth immediately scuttling (i.e. dropping their goods and self destruct [only the wagons did the last part]).
