Choosing Specific Fish to Clean
« on: March 22, 2020, 02:37:05 pm »

I have a strange mood pending which only requires shells (I know I should have already had shells I just forgot to make a fishery beforehand). But my dwarves simply will not clean any mussels (of which I have many) and insist on cleaning salmon! Is there any way to choose a specific fish, or type of fish to clean. I tried forbidding other fish in the z-stocks menu, but I could not see any specific fish; I guess that's because my bookkeeper is not precise enough. Any help would be much appreciated.

Please save my dwarf, thanks.

If your bookkeeper was not on precise, then I will guess that your fort is not that old. You might be able to forbid all the non-shellfish by:
- stop your fisherdwarfs from fishing, because they might catch more salmon
- find the raw fish barrels in your stockpiles (or find the pile of raw fish at the fishing locations), bulk forbid them and then unforbid the shellfish.

To speed it up, set your fishery workshop to "clean fish, repeat", because it will keep the cleaner in the workshop continuously.

There is something to be said about, if the stakes are as high, maybe reconsider your certitudes. One has to be aggressively allistic to feel entitled to be able to trust. But it won't happen to me, my bit doesn't count etc etc... Just saying, after my recent experiences I couldn't trust the public if I wanted to. People got their risk assessment neurons rotten and replaced with game theory. Folks walk around like fat turkeys taunting the world to slaughter them.

Aha! I wasn't aware I could forbid specific items from barrels, thank you!

If I remember correctly, the forbidding of items in containers is counter intuitive in that forbidding while inside the container will forbid the container, and you actually have to go inside the item to forbid it.

That is correct, it took a few tries for me to realize that.

It probably would have been easiest to make a new single tile stockpile and forbid everything but unprepared raw mussel and link that to the current stockpile(take) and the fishery workshop(give).

Dwarves will then only use the raw mussels, produce shells and you simply just delete the stockpile when you have enough shells.

I think this is the easiest and less fuss method to resolving the situation.  No need to look inside barrels or looking through multiple screens to forbid and then reclaim items.

That's probably true, but at this stage in my fortress (I only started a few weeks back), I only needed to look through one or two barrels.
