Ah, I didn't know that.  That's unfortunate.  I suppose you could just repeatedly banish them when they show up again?

It takes few years, before you get hillocks to send them away to. However, you could keep banishing entire waves of immigrants, consisting because of the bug, the very same Dwarves, time after time.

And you've seen this bug actually happen?
I've never had a banished dwarf return. It's pretty rare.

You can send the unhappy dwarves off to conquer places. Either they lose and they'll not return, or they'll win and stay there as a noble. Then you have a holding to send other dwarves to.

Some Dwarf pulls the lever for bottom bridge and problem is over instantly.

I don't like this at all, though.  It is cruel and not like the way I wish to view dwarves as individuals.  I feel like a monster doing this.  I've more or less stopped playing this game because I don't like treating individuals like this.
You don't have to do this at all. Send stressed out dwarves to live out their old age in the hillocks.

Except you can't do this because of the bug where you can't exile dwarves.

Except that you can.
How many dwarves have you actually witnessed returning to your fortress? Ever?

Can you link bug report? Preferably with save attached to it? https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Emigration#Bugs is not listing it, and even "Dwarves often return to the fortress after being expelled" is without a confirmation (I will check Mantis and remove this claim if I will be unable to find bug report for it).

EDIT: unable to find report at https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view_all_bug_page.php - I deleted the mentioned claim from wiki

@Sarmatian123 - If you have save where this problem can be reproduced and bug is not reported at https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view_all_bug_page.php - then reporting a bug is more likely to result in fix that complaining in this thread (still, not very likely - but more likely)

I read about this thing on Wiki. I expelled 25 Dwarves to some far away Hillock, so no chance for them coming back I think.
I banished 1 Dwarf to wilderness and forgot this one. It was a tantruming one, so if some of the returnee were tantruming, I would notice. None has yet.
However it concerns me, that many immigrants, whom I checked stats for, are in some state of nervous wreckage.
Can, those 25 nervous Dwarves expelled to a remote Hillock, be poisoning with their attributes the attributes of new immigrant Dwarves?

It refuses to exile some dwarves.  The option isn't available.

This is the most recent bug report but it's been reported in the past more than once.

https://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=10848

It affects dwarves with children who are not present in the fort, usually from migrant waves.

Yes, that bug exists. Only effects a few dwarves fortunately.
Of course, they're usually the ones stressed because their children were kidnapped by goblins, which isn't good.

It affected enough I needed to set up an "exile bridge" to launch them into exile in the magma because they were all going nuts.

Indeed. The Dwarves are going nuts.
I expelled 20+ and suicided another 20 Dwarves, but they all were extremely shy or easily depressed.
Now I am seeing some Dwarves stressed, who should never be stressed at all.

http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=15010

How this Dwarf became so stressed? "She can handle stress."!
At year 33 the Dwarf became stressed, despite her stress tolerance. What's wrong with rain?
It seems rain took affect on this Dwarf in year 16, then no further rain changes for next 15 years.
Suddenly for no reason, after year 28, the rain started wrecking havoc alterations to her personality for no reason at all.
Why stress is not going down on this Dwarf?
This Dwarf was rained upon for 23 years for almost no rain personality changes at all.
What is going on, can someone explain?

When I asked Toady about what the categories were for personality changes for each slot in FotF, he revealed that there are something like 42 categories (iirc) that take precedence in each of 8 slots.

A thought that gets pushed off from mulling before timer is up doesn't cause a personality changes.

Theory: So for 23 years, this dwarf found eight different categories of thoughts that each had a stronger effect than rain, but now they didn't have such thought for 2 years and change occurred.

Well, I didn't put this Dwarf in suicide squad. Legendary clothier tough on stress... What a painful loss it would be. Though I have sent stressed Dwarves with good stress resistance under atom smasher before. I only disabled all hauling and construction on this Dwarf, so she could work exclusively on her needs and get her focus up. Miracle happened. After 1 month the red arrow of stress went away. Thanks the higher focus alone.

Yellow arrow by itself seems to be quite harmless.
Low focus is not causing additional stress, but it seems low focus somehow prevents sufficient stress dissipation.
Low stress tolerance somehow causes existing stress to keep excessively growing. Even, if Dwarf has needs satisfied and is focused.
Mulling over stressful things maybe is somehow responsible there with these continuous stress gains? How you make Dwarf to mull on 8 stronger things, then the stress-factor?

Red arrow combined with a stress/depression weak Dwarf means, "death help", is the only cure available.
Red arrow combined with stress/depression strong Dwarf means, you need to get them into a better focus. Problem is, what if you can't yet without special workshops and special comfort food and other specials, which you just can't care about without better automation system in?

IMHO rain gets way too much to play with Dwarves. I have seen Dwarves going crazy amass because of some death body's sight. Rain drops of water ain't bloodied and cut into pieces dead body of some sentient being. This rain sensitivity in Dwarves seems to be somehow greatly overplayed. Dwarves should be more tough with rain, then they are to sun (the cave adaptation!), but it is not so.

Cave adaptation is one mechanism of copying with neural disorder. Why don't we have something alike for dead bodies, rain, rotting cloths and so on. The more you get the rain, less you care about rain. In time you can live in rain without noticing the rain, like when cave adaptation goes away, because you're living on surface and not in cave.

I get that you want a fix for the game, but since this effects your forts now maybe just use one of the solutions we currently have until it's fixed in game:

Quote from: https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Stress#Altering_the_raws
The easiest method is to alter the raw files that control stress vulnerability. The dwarven file is found at /raw/objects/creature_standard.txt. Inside that file under [CREATURE:DWARF], you will find [PERSONALITY:STRESS_VULNERABILITY:0:45:100]. These numbers are dwarves' minimum (0), average (45), and maximum (100) capacity for stress. Changing these values will cap stress vulnerability on all dwarves - for instance, 0:30:70 would limit the maximum stress possible to the range of "High", meaning that you can still get stress problems, but to a more manageable degree. Making the values 0:0:0 would make all dwarves immune to stress entirely. You do not need to generate a new world for this to work (if you want this fix to apply to an existing save, edit the raw file in data/save/(your world)/raw/objects instead).
